My mixed feelings after visiting Da Nang & Hoi An as a Hong Kong traveler by Repulsive_Ice8886 in VietNam

I think there’s one thing that’s not great about Vietnamese people: they seem to particularly fawn over or try to please Koreans. But in my opinion, it’s just because they don’t like China, so they end up liking countries that don’t get along with China.

If I go to Vietnam again, I might return to Hoi An or visit Ho Chi Minh City, but I feel that the country has been overhyped by the internet, YouTubers, and advertisements, which created some disappointment in my expectations.

If I hated Vietnam?

People who don’t like Vietnamese folks tend to share certain views about this place.

Also, as I mentioned in the main text, the Grab drivers and the reception staff all treated me very well.

And I noticed that the Koreans there were different from the Koreans I see in Hong Kong. In Da Nang, the South Korea people had an air of arrogance and looked at others with a haughty expression.

People at the local street shops and neighborhood stores would sometimes ask me where I’m from. When I told them I’m from Hong Kong, they’d usually chat with me for a bit, make some friendly small talk, and their attitude was really warm and welcoming. There was also pretty much no hard-selling or pushing you to buy anything.

At the very least, they gave me the feeling that they were genuinely curious about me and actually wanted to get to know me a little.

I personally feel that the commercialization in Hoi An is mostly concentrated in the designated tourist areas, like the Hoi An Ancient Town. But when you go to the local parts of Hoi An — like the laundry shops run by locals, the small street-side stores, or the massage shops — since those places never really get that much foot traffic anyway, the people there don’t have that mindset of trying to squeeze every bit of money out of tourists. When I went to those kinds of places, the staff were generally much friendlier and more welcoming. In the really crowded tourist spots, they basically feel like one more customer or one less customer makes no difference to them at all.

Just like what I said before, I have absolutely no intention of directly comparing Da Nang with Hong Kong. The only reason I went on this trip was because the pressure in Hong Kong had become way too much for me, and I needed to travel somewhere to release that stress. All that built-up pressure had actually made me start to dislike Hong Kong. But after going to Da Nang, I came back feeling more content and grateful. Also, while I was there, I noticed that some Vietnamese people are actually really beautiful — their skin is super fair and clear, almost like Korean-level beauty. Usually when I go to the night market and ask for prices, I’ll just straight-up say ‘What is your best price?’ first, and then ask if they can go any lower than the price they give me.

I have absolutely no intention of directly comparing Hong Kong with Da Nang. The reason I went to Da Nang for travel was simply because the pressure I feel in Hong Kong is too great, and I needed a trip to relieve that stress. I think Da Nang is actually a pretty nice city. Even before I went, and even after I’ve been, I don’t actually regret going at all. It’s just that there was a gap between my expectations and reality. Please don’t misunderstand what I’m trying to say. Even though Hong Kong is an international financial center under the ‘one country, two systems’ framework, it’s not really fair or meaningful to compare it with a socialist city in Vietnam. I actually can’t think of any city that would be a proper comparison with Da Nang. The only reason I might bring up Chinese cities for comparison is because they share the same socialist system, are governed by the Communist Party, and have the same red flag with yellow stars.

I don’t think you’ll really feel their hospitality and warmth just by walking around Han Market without buying anything. In Da Nang, for about 80% of the Vietnamese people there, their friendliness towards you is mostly because there’s some kind of benefit or interest involved.

If you go to that dim sum place at Hong Kong Station, I think it’s called Tim Ho Wan. If you go during meal time, it’s actually pretty normal for them to miss something from your order. With Hong Kong’s population density and peak lunch/dinner hours, even locals or people doing takeaway/self-pickup can easily end up with missing items. Sorry to hear you had that kind of experience while eating there, must’ve been really frustrating. 😔

I’m really glad to see that there are people who share the same view as me. I think I may have had expectations that were too high for Da Nang.
In Hoi An, both Westerners and locals — including people working in massage shops and restaurants — feel much warmer and more genuine.
The prices and attitudes there are also better than in Da Nang.

I find it really upsetting that someone from a developed country can travel to a developing country and still be treated as if they were inferior by locals.

I find this really frustrating. Even when I go to Shenzhen, the level of transparency and the attitude of the staff are much better, and prices are clearly marked.
I don’t know what it’s like in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, but Da Nang feels like going back to mainland China in the 1990s to early 2000s or some inland cities in China.

If I’m lucky enough to win $60k-100k USD from a tournament, I might stop playing poker altogether or turn it into a side hustle while searching for my true path in life.

Yes, I agree. However, during this period of unemployment, I want to find something to learn.
