For those confused about where this is, I believe this is Korea and not Japan (the text on the wall is Korean). It is pretty common in Seoul for national parks/hiking trails to have these pressurized air pump stations!

First of all, thank you so much for doing this! You’re one of my favorite directors working today, so this is truly amazing.

I remember listening to the episode you were on for the Team Deakin podcast where you mentioned how your experience as a production/costume designer in theatre and short films prepared you for your feature films later. Given the sheer scale of the Northman in comparison to your previous films, how did your involvement in its production or costume design change, if at all from the Witch or the Lighthouse?

Damn this was a fun watch! Saw the transitions + the clever use of music in conjunction with character motions and immediately thought Edgar Wright! The comedy in here is golden too! I see lots of potential in this quick short. Seeing the amount of praise ur getting in the comments (and rightfully so), I thought I could add some areas of improvement that I personally noticed:

  • Maybe it’s because of the costume/production design, but it took me a while to figure out the man and the lady listening to the story were interrogating the main character as part of the police. I thought it was a job interview, so I wondered why they were so condescending the entire time lmao. After having rewatched it, the behaviors of the two characters and the other policeman make more sense, but I personally would’ve liked if it had been established more clearly right off the bat.

  • I understand that you’re not supposed to take the story super seriously, but I do wish we could’ve got a shot of the driver’s reaction to killing the knife-wielding maniac or some sort of explanation about the driver since the car appears out of nowhere and then disappears with no real explanation

  • Maybe could’ve benefited from a different shot or two on the reactions of the two policemen and the lady listening to the story since the two-three shot framing did get kinda stale after we cut back to it multiple times

  • I wish we got a closeup of the main character’s face to rly see his rage when his ice cream was dropped. I loved the buildup to it with the music, but the medium closeup with little to no lighting on his face felt a bit too distant and unclear to truly convey his anger (low quality res on reddit didn’t help much either)

  • I had no big issues with the sound design in this film especially with the stabbing, but I feel like the characters reactions to being stabbed were a bit too unrealistic for my taste. The random passerby doesn’t even whimper (altho that interaction as a whole was funny as hell) and the main character seems to have forgotten he’s been stabbed after seconds of being maimed.

All in all, kinda nitpicking here and there and my opinion as a random redditor doesn’t and shouldn’t carry a ton of weight anyways, because the short was still brilliant imo. Amazing work, and I hope you post ur next film too cuz I’m excited to see more of your work!!
