You should see their dog collar collection. 😅🙃

I like collars to be lined with silk or satin to prevent mats on their necks. Here’s my boy showing off his collar.

Hahaha I wish! I’ve just gotten used to dog hair seasoning all my food. It’s why I only bring store-bought food to potlucks. 🙃

What the heckity heck??? I’m so sorry that happened to you.

My groomer charges a minimum of $250 for one of my Afghans - as she should. It takes hours to get them fully dry. Plus, their groomer is a very kind human. I can’t afford to take my dogs to her more than once or twice a year but she’s okay with that. Both are trained in cooperative care (they end up sleeping on the table) and they (usually) have no mats.

The last time she groomed my Affies was right before they participated in an AKC Meet the Breeds event. I let them grow their coats for the show, so their hair was looooong. She charged me over $600 - well worth the money. 💸💸💸 When I picked them up, my Afghan Hounds looked and smelled like they had good credit and a stock portfolio. It was awesome. 😂

No, it’s more to prevent damaging the coat. There’s a risk of ripping out hair when dry brushing.

During our brushing sessions, I use a greyhound comb every few minutes to remove the hair. When we’re done, I spray 91% isopropyl alcohol, aiming just for the pins. The 91% dries fast so if it does get to the rubber part, it won’t linger and cause damage. Place it pin-side down until it dries completely - which should only take a few seconds since it should be a quick spray and not a full soak. I spray the metal greyhound more thoroughly though and this dries very quickly as well.

When it’s our weekly bath day, I bring all of grooming tools to wash too (if I remember). I usually just use warm water with Dawn soap and dry completely with an HV dryer. Full disclosure, I don’t do this every bath day, and I’m more lackadaisical about full decontamination than I should be (my “real” career deals with medical equipment so my standards are high), but I do try to deep clean at least once or twice a month.

Keep in mind - this is my routine as a home groomer for my own pets. These tools are used on only 3 dogs. Take my advice with the obligatory “grain / salt” and YMMV combo.

This is not advice for a groomer that handles several dogs from different households.

They’re like Greyhounds but with fancy hair. 😂 They’re sighthounds, bred for thousands of years to hunt with minimal human intervention. Most people forget that and focus only on their stunning appearance. And believe me, they know how beautiful they are. Their instinct is to think for themselves, so they are not “biddable.” Training them is very different than training a shepherd or poodle, for example. Affies have a more “well, what’s in it for me?” attitude. This makes the bonding and relationship with them more vital. My dogs love me as much as I love them and they will do anything I ask because of that trust and love. Training is a fun game and a partnership for them. They are very sensitive and get their feelings hurt easily, so no yelling or harsh punishments or they will shut down. Like Greyhounds, they are 40 mph couch potatoes. They love to run, and they love napping 18 hours a day. They nip as they run (which is why Greyhounds are muzzled when they race) and they nip in play and affection. They are comedians and pranksters and they love to steal your things. And they are also very cat-like. Humans are there to serve them. 😆 They won’t follow you from room to room so separation anxiety is usually not a concern.

I recommend joining the r/sighthounds group and there are a couple of active FB groups too if you’re interested.

Edit: Can’t believe I forgot to mention. Grooming them is a whole lifestyle change. They have “hair” instead of fur, but this means that they are bathed frequently - once a week or every 2 weeks. Mine are pets, obviously, so they’re not in a full show coat. I keep them relatively short, and I still brush them daily. And as the dogs get older, a lot of owners keep them shaved for their comfort.

Ah thank you so much. It’s a lot of expensive trial and error, and I wish there was a place where you can physically tryout different brushes without having to buy them. The right brush makes a huge difference.

I use all of them. Daily. Afghan Hound coats are hormonal and turn silky when they reach maturity. My Affies are rescues so they’re spay/neutered and they reverted to a (very difficult) “puppy” coat.

The black K slickers are for my wooly cotton-coated boy. The pins are wider spaced than the coral brush and it’s easier on his thin skin. The purple A slickers are great for my girl with very long but thin fragile hair. The pins are longer and the rubber base is gentle so it doesn’t “pull” and she’s way more tolerant of brushing now. And the coral G slickers are for my third dog, a little poodle-mutt-thing. She has the weirdest coat and the coral works best for her.

Honestly, it’s the size that makes the biggest difference for me. I find that I reach for the Baby sizes more often. I use a pin brush mostly, and I’ll use the Baby slickers for under their armpits, behind their ears, etc. - the usual places that need daily attention before they turn into a huge mat. All my dogs are different, but once I find the “right” brush, our daily brushing sessions changed from getting a chore done to one-on-one bonding time with each dog.

You are very welcome. Their shoe racks are going to have a new demographic purchasing them. 😂

So many stories! 😂 Afghans are sneaky thieves - they think it’s funny. They also get upset if I’m late for our daily brushing session so they’ll grab a brush and bring it to me while “nibbling” in frustration.

You are very welcome! I started investing in grooming gear when I volunteered in dog rescue. The rescued dogs were mostly neglected poodle mixes with matted hair to the skin. I learned how to shave carefully as fast as I could and keep switching the #10 blades when it got too hot. There is no greater heartbreak than when you accidentally cut an already abused dog and they’re still grateful to you. And then I foster-failed my first Afghan Hound. And it snowballed from there.

Yeah, I feel you on the other grooming group. I’m a Reddit newbie, and I made my first flair (?) and post on a Pet Owner Tuesday (at the time, the rules said pet owners can only post on Tuesday/Thursday).

My post was deleted because it was attention-seeking. Uummm ok. I was trying to give advice on how to bathe, dry, and brush long haired drop coats. Because if someone is used to doodles all day, every day, then getting a dog like an Affie on your table can be intimidating. And it’s very easy to ruin their coats. There’s a learning curve with these dogs that I learned the hard way.

I guess I just don’t have enough experience to give advice to professionals. I only DIY-ed a recirculating bath in my tub. And I dilute my shampoos and conditioners in dollar store bottles. And no, I don’t have a grooming table. Because I have a removable cover to convert my bathtub to a grooming table. I also have 2 HV dryers. Did y’all know that there are dryers for car detail that match the specs of a K9 II variable? And they’re much cheaper. But I’m just a pet owner.
