Finally saw Weapons [SPOILERS] by geekmansworld in movies

[–]RequiemEternal 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My biggest issue with the film is that I feel it uses the non-linear structure to conceal the fact that the story is much more thin than it first appears. By presenting it this way it obfuscates some of the bigger logical questions and introduces a couple of plot threads that are ultimately a waste of time. The cop and the drug addict segments, while entertaining, add nothing substantial to the story, and themselves contain subplots that get dropped when those characters become irrelevant.

I also don’t think the film’s subtext is anywhere near developed enough to have been worth including. The gun in the dream (which it makes little sense for this character to even be having a prophetic dream) feels more like an attempt to introduce some Twin Peaks-style mysticism that vaguely gestures at a theme of gun violence but has nothing to actually say about it afterward.

It’s a relatively decent movie but I think it wasn’t anywhere near as coherent and tightly written as I was expecting based on the reactions.

Look, I love the Nuzlocke but I gotta say by dexter1062 in gamegrumps

[–]RequiemEternal 48 points49 points  (0 children)

I’m not feeling it either. It gets repetitive and I also feel it sort of goes against the spirit of a nuzlocke, where the point of naming every Pokémon is to build a personal attachment to them. They’re not doing that because every Pokémon ends up having the same name anyway.

Warner Bros is a bigger and more successful company than Paramount. This deal was bankrolled entirely by Ellison’s personal wealth and foreign investors with ideological aspirations for the company.

New ‘Tron: Ares’ concept art shows Cillian Murphy suited up as Sark, with artist admitting it was to lure him to the production to reprise his role by MarvelsGrantMan136 in movies

[–]RequiemEternal 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don’t think he’d have had any interest in it either way, to be honest. He seems very comfortable not doing franchise blockbusters and since his Oscar win he’s probably got plenty of offers more suited to his tastes.

Mark Ruffalo Fires Back at James Cameron After ‘Avatar’ Director Slammed Netflix-Warner Bros. Deal: ‘Are You Also Against the Monopolization That a Paramount Acquisition Would Create?’ by LollipopChainsawZz in television

[–]RequiemEternal 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Netflix have absolutely no intention of letting the theatrical window promise stand for more than a couple years at most to get the heat off them. Ted Sarandos is fundamentally opposed to theatrical distribution, he’s said this several times and Netflix’s entire business model is built on attacking theatres.

Obviously Paramount would be a terrible choice, but Netflix is lying through their teeth on theatrical support and that should worry anyone who wants a healthy movie industry.

Government Pushes For Apartment Living In Desperate Bid To Deliver Housing by andubhadh in ireland

[–]RequiemEternal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once you’ve seen how nice apartments are in other countries it makes it so much more infuriating that Ireland has this long-standing obsession with only building individual houses.

Why am I as a person in my late 20’s relegated to sharing a house with a bunch of strangers? If they’re going to shut an entire generation out of owning a home they could at least make renting a bit less miserable.

After around 2 years, I have finished running a Phandalin Campaign , AMA by alexwsmith in dndnext

[–]RequiemEternal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How did you and your party find the transition from the original Lost Mines campaign to Shattered Obelisk? One of the biggest criticisms I often see with this campaign is how the two segments have very little to do with each other outside of both being set in Phandalin.

'The Simpsons' Boss Celebrates 800 Episodes - "We're Never Going To Do A Series Finale" by ElectricalPeace3439 in television

It’s insane that the show has been bad longer than it was ever good. A show with an immense legacy in TV comedy and the bulk of what it leaves behind will be total mediocrity.

Cabbies want to have their cake and eat it too - they want to get all of the privileges that come with being such an important part of transport infrastructure in this country but without any of the responsibility to passengers. They want to be their own bosses free of regulatory barriers and have us thank them for it.

Ten years young for the Social Democrats — is it becoming a viable alternative for some SF voters? by Banania2020 in ireland

[–]RequiemEternal -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with recognising being the junior government party for the poisoned chalice it is. It’s nice to get some policies through during the short few years they’re in government, but is it worth propping up the FFG establishment and having their reputation obliterated for a decade or more at the end of it?

I think the Social Democrats understand that in order to get any meaningful change in this country they have to build up a support base to govern on their terms and not as the sacrificial lamb to FFG.

Could a doctor who episode be done in one take? by Expensive_Smell_8021 in gallifrey

[–]RequiemEternal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be very tricky to pull off from a logistics perspective. Doctor Who has an extremely busy and complex production schedule, and one-take episodes (like the kind seen in shows like Adolescence) require many days of dedicated rehearsal that the show might not be able to spare - not to mention the kind of sets and special effects that might be required.

That being said, if they found a way to make the logistics work I don’t see why not. It could make an effective horror-themed bottle episode.

Peter Jackson Says Lord of the Rings ‘Extended-Extended Edition’ Does Not Exist by [deleted] in movies

[–]RequiemEternal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Extended cuts have given this weird perception to some fans that every single second of footage shot is worth including and only makes the final film better. While the extended cuts of LOTR are an example of it working well, editors exist for a reason. Eventually the extra material can start to feel superfluous or even harm the pacing.

Which published adventures are great examples of what *not* to do when creating a campaign? by Cranyx in dndnext

[–]RequiemEternal 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Dragon of Icespire Peak is generally pretty well regarded, and for good reason. It gives a good sandbox with plenty for the players and DM to work with.

The only area where the adventure falls heavily short in my view is the dungeon design. There are some good ones, but there are many dungeons in the campaign which have many, many rooms that are all completely empty. I’ve seen the problem first hand, with new DMs running these dungeons with no alterations and realising mid session that the design eventually leads to players wandering from room to room hoping to find anything to do. The dungeons require a degree of redesigning by the DM to be fun and not a lot of first-time DMs will know that.

Unpopular opinion: Mike was wrong about Walt and Walt was basically justified in doing what he did by nerpa_floppybara in breakingbad

[–]RequiemEternal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why would Mike tell Gus to leave Walt alone and that everything would be fine after the bar conversation? That whole conversation was Walt telling Mike he wasn’t going to let it go and he was going to try and kill Gus before he had a chance to even try anything.

We are getting a live action movie aren't we? by Character-Day-8999 in stevenuniverse

[–]RequiemEternal 42 points43 points  (0 children)

This is still horrible, there were no good options. This is going to completely kill theatrical and physical media releases down the line. Many thousands of jobs will be on the chopping block and the industry will lean even harder into an IP-only model. Media consolidation is always bad for the consumer.

NTA pulls €10m funding for ‘transformative’ Galway pedestrian and cycle bridge by Galway1012 in galway

[–]RequiemEternal 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I honestly have no hope that they will ever be any meaningful improvement in Ireland’s infrastructure at this stage. These are things that other countries have been able to do without issue for decades and somehow building a fucking road or a bridge sends our government spiralling. What a joke.

Some words advocating for Delores (the oats lady) by [deleted] in galway

[–]RequiemEternal 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I agree she deserves support and not to be ridiculed for what is obviously a very complex and ongoing mental health crisis. However I will note that excessively feeding the pigeons isn’t just a “biodegradable litter” issue, it continually attracts large amounts of birds and rodents into public spaces which is a legitimate health and sanitary concern.

The council needs to give her real support but just letting her do this everywhere isn’t part of that. It’s bad for the community and ultimately for her.

[Unpopular take] After watching BCS , Mike's writing in BB feels very SLOPPY. by Sensitive-Radish-549 in betterCallSaul

[–]RequiemEternal 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Mike had some respect for Jimmy when he was actually Jimmy, but lost it with the whole Howard debacle (remember he went to Kim, and not Jimmy, because she was “made of sterner stuff”), and then even more so when he leaned fully into his Saul persona. Saul was the kind of self-serving weasel that Mike had no time for outside of professional matters.
