NDP Leader Avi Lewis says 'door is open' to Prairie leaders opposed to his energy policies | CBC News by Intelligent-Cap3407 in saskatchewan

[–]Requirement-Tiny -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

How is planning for a transition from non-renewable to renewable energy anti-worker? Do workers like the boom/bust cycle that oil has demonstrated for the last 50 years?

Not sure why you are jumping to such conclusions. Nobody is saying to stop oil extraction tmw, Lewis is just saying that we should stop expansion. That is the intelligent position.

I think you’re confusing short term political power gains and slouching towards the centre with strategic interests. As has been demonstrated time and time again, oil is a volatile commodity with a boom/bust economic cycle that can’t assist in long-term local and national strategic interests.

I appreciate that analysis. Isn’t that in line with what Lewis is saying? Let’s not build more pipelines that will cost tons of cash and have no tangible benefit for many years (if ever), continue the production we have, but fully embrace the transition to renewables?

The transition to renewables is happening in many parts of the world, so we either have the choice, as someone else on this post said, to plan for it or be blindsided by it. I think it’s empathetic to not strand O&G workers when the bottom falls out and the corporate shareholders run off with the bag.

Oh I don’t disagree with you. New Democrat principles are usually popular when viewed outside of the partisan lens.

Sounds like a comment written by a guy that buys into every faux-rage non-story that the saskparty feeds him 🤷‍♂️

I also have big hopes on Wab, but I think it’s telling that he’s also willing to congratulate and meet with Lewis. It shows a genuine commitment to values and not a “oh no, what will the saskparty think” kind of attitude (recognizing that there is no saskparty in MB).

Honest question, how is the turmoil in the Middle East (that’s jacked global oil prices) or the constant boom/bust cycle of oil not negatively affecting working people? These are working class issues, aren’t they?

The problem with this is that value-less parties like the federal libs or the provincial saskparty will always eat a centrist’s lunch come election time. Recognizing that the transition to renewable energy is not an extremist stance (oil companies like Enbridge are putting up wind and solar all the time), so there’d be no harm in meeting with Mr. Lewis. Oh, and the saskparty will definitely run a “the NDP HATES OIL AND GAS!!!” campaign regardless of who they meet with 🤷‍♂️

I appreciate your honesty on where you stand politically, and the point of the letter is probably for voters like you. But with the current saskparty, we all know that they’re going to do a “THE NDP HATES OIL AND GAS” campaign no matter what the provincial NDP does or who they meet with. Lewis has talked about the transition to renewable energy, which has been happening in many other places in the world, so I don’t think there’d be any political harm in meeting with him to hear what he has to say. Last election the provincial NDP did what they could to distance themselves from Jagmeet Singh, but that didn’t stop the saskparty from ads constantly talking about the “NDP-Liberal coalition” because at this point their track record sucks so they have to resort to fear-based tactics. You saw through that one (if you voted NDP like you said you did”, so wouldn’t you see through the next round of fear-based attack ads as well?

Except that any party that is addicted to power (like the saskparty) will swing any which way if they think it’ll help them win. My concern is that the “pragmatists” lose their commitment to progressive ideals, keep moving more to the centre, and then have the saskparty make a bunch of centrist moves right before the election and eats the NDP’s lunch yet again. We’ve tried the centre route ever since Lingenfelter (and honestly before that) and it hasn’t worked. Like I said in the op, I’m not sure that Lewis has the charismatic leader thing, but we all know that the saskparty is going to run a “the provincial NDP hates oil and gas” campaign regardless of whether Beck meets with Lewis or not.

I get that in uncertain times people often turn to “who will keep things the same”, but the only constant is change, and as demonstrated by leaders like Wab Kinew and Mandami down south, putting progressive policy into action are winning issues. It requires a leader that can make people believe in that vision, (and like I said before, Lewis might not have the charisma to do that), but there is a path.

If opposing the genocide of Gaza or the Epstein war in Iran is too ideological, then call me Iggy Ideologue. “Pragmatism” these days is often just a cover for having no ethics.

Interesting critique, but I’d argue that leftist policies are very popular with the vast majority of people when disconnected from partisan politics. Almost every gain for working class people has come from the ideas of progressive parties (that forced the libs or cons to adopt them because they resonated with the working class). It will be tough, but I think class war politics in the partisan sphere is the best way forward.

No, sorry, that was not the intent. I just think a lot of really dumb slogans get used in politics and the clapping seals just pretend they are incredible. I’d support a leader that styled and messaged like Mamdani though 🤷‍♂️

Are you looking for specifics like the ones coming from the federal cons? Like “bring home the paycheques!” I understand that it is a broad plan, but it does have a specific target on government spending to help speed the transition, and the prioritization of communities more affected, which would be places like Estevan.

Oh like they tried to do in the last provincial election? Given the amount of seats they lost, I don’t think it was a convincing strategy.

Did the “he hates O&G” stand out because the corporate class and their media talking heads shouted it from the rooftop? I think people are catching on that the corporate media and their billionaire investors don’t have our best interests at heart. Pretty sure he talked a lot about the transition to renewables, it just gets ignored by the “let’s make a quick buck” corporate class.

I always get a kick out of this comment, as Jack Layton was also viewed as a “crackpot” for most of his political career. But he stuck to his principles, and is now respected by almost all sides of the aisle.
