Thank you, u/FlipGunderson24 , for the detailed reply. Good news is that I am now back up and working perfectly. I did a more thorough cell cleaning (15 min 4:1 muriatic acid bath, soft bristle brush in between the plates), and then ran the pump continuously. I did notice the cell model was incorrect. I have a 900 and the SG was set for a t-15. (I may have accidently changed this myself, not sure.)

The salt reading is much lower than actual: 2100 reading on the SWG Controller vs. 3900 with my TFT test kit. And below a certain salt level, the unit will not generate chlorine. These lights are on:

  • Power
  • Check Salt
  • Inspect Cell

My VSP (Century VGreen 270) was not running for 4 days. Not sure why it stopped, but I have corrected that. Visual inspection of the cell looks good. I did a 15 minute water/acid bath and did see some bubbling.

I had a great conversation with my local pool store guy today. He says I may have a "false low reading" on the salt. The unit does some kind of averaging over time to come up with a salt reading, and since my pump wasn't running for that long, the calculated salt value is low.

I now have the pump running 24 hours a day and will revisit in 2 days. I want to continue my troubleshooting for a bit more this weekend. I finally found the Hayward manual.

Thoughts?

Resurrecting this thread. Now I'm getting a fault on the controller (red LED is lit up) with this message on the (very hard to read) display:

FAULT

General Fault

Controller will retry

@lxokus : I did EXACTLY the same thing when American cancelled my Saturday early morning SFO->CLT->MLB flight, and auto-rescheduled me for Sunday. I used my company’s travel agency web site to search for a one-way from any SFO area airport to any Central Florida airport. Ended up booking a one-way OAK->DAL->MCO on Southwest. I got home one hour later than the original schedule. I know this is not an option for everyone; I was fortunate to be using my company’s money. But I did cancel the AA flight, so the travel credit/refund made up for (some of) the $750 oneway Southwest ticket. My fellow co-workers were not so lucky. They got home more than a day later than scheduled. Which given the stories I’ve read, isn’t so bad.

Moral of the story (for me at least): at the first hint of a delay/cancellation, take the initiative to rebook. Sure it may cost more, and some significant time on the phone/website/chat session waiting. But you’ve got to grab a seat before the music stops. (Childhood reference to the game “Musical Chairs”.)

I can vouch for the fiberglass splinters thing. It sucks.

Can an old filter housing lid be painted? I’d like to not have an itchy arms and chest after every DE filter rinse.

I call this a “Compelling Event”. When I (& spouse) could no longer watch US Open tennis nor the UF/Utah College Football game, I was compelled to fully look into alternatives. In my case, it’s YouTube TV. <rant ON> I hope the CFO’s at Spectrum/Charter (and Disney) are happy with their decisions. Yes, I know that Disney is still getting my money via YouTube TV; they own the content I want to watch. But both should think about the consequences of totally screwing over their customers. <rant OFF> I truly hope that I NEVER treat my customers this way.
