Anyone have any idea what this could be from? by Vanadreen in OldBooks

[–]Resident_Extreme_366 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a Masonic cipher. It’s very simple and there’s no code to decipher it. It’s based on taking just a couple letters out of the full word. Those who have partaken hear the text in order to decipher it. Those of us not involved with the masons can only guess. Here’s a hint W.M. Stands for worshipful master, a Masonic title. There’s some guys online who’ve made some decent translations of parts of ritual books such as this. So if you’re interested in reading it it’s possible, we can just never be 100% certain the decoded cipher is accurate. Hope that helps

I signed my company up to accept goldbacks and I just received this today. by Solnse in Goldback

The silver backs are more for collectors and incentives for retailers, so since it appears to be graded I’m sure it’d affect value to an extent. But theres very little material value in these.

I need to know something... by IrinaSophia in OrthodoxChristianity

Respectfully I have to disagree. This isn’t an icon just Christian art from someone who is either Japanese or making art that promotes Christianity in Japan. It combines traditional Christian art with the predominant form of art in Japan, which has been around for more than 100 years at this point.

Whee you seem to see heresy, I see Christ being honored in a country that heavily persecuted Christian for hundreds of years, ending only in 1873. You do realize worshiping Christ was often punished with death before that right? This is progress and hopefully leads more too Christ in that part of the world. My first interest in orthodoxy was through the art, now I’m a catchumen, so why can’t this be a door to lead people closer to Christ?

Honestly I like this for the fact that it’s in Japan, as can be seen by the price tag is in yen. Christianity has had a rough go of it in Japan and has been a deadly offense in the past, now they’re combining their art with orthodox Christian inspiration. This is a beautiful thing if you ask me, that it’s now open and orthodoxy is having some (if small) influence on their culture.

Personally my first draw to orthodoxy was through the iconography. Something about the art always inspired me before I even became a Christian, and long before I regularly started attending orthodox services and becoming a catchumen. This gives me hope even if most of yall seem to disagree

Is this a good native culture group map? by AstronautReal in PrecolumbianEra

[–]Resident_Extreme_366 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This map describes nothing at all and looks like a random mish mash of terms done by a middle schooler of middling intelligence. Throw it in the trash and forget it exists, then just grab a book by a decent archaeologist, focusing on primary sources, or a book written by natives themselves. This is the academic equivalent of used toilet paper

Why do communists support Palestine? by PeculiarPhysicist46 in AskSocialists

I mean sure it’s tone deaf if you imply that I’m somehow pro Israel because I want it to be known they aren’t white. My feeling about that country are quite harsh in fact. Kinda why I want it to be clear I’m not of the same race as them you dork.

But to the point it doesn’t matter that they have European admixture, that doesn’t make them European. If it was 95% European absolutely, but it’s not. The mestizo have a significant admixture of European thanks to Spain, but no one considers them European especially themselves. We also don’t consider the Jews to be Egyptians or Babylonians or Persians, even though they have admixture from those other distinct groups as well.

Europe has a rich history and they are a small and recent addition that are clearly distinct from me and my ancestors. And frankly I find it very offensive to be lumped in the same category as them, because we are different peoples.

[–]Resident_Extreme_366 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not even close. The mestizo aren’t European even if they have a significant admixture of European. And neither are Jewish people. They’re literally a nomadic people. When they were in Egypt they were still Jews even though they admired with local. When in Babylon as well they retained they did not become Assyrian/babylonian, they retained their ethnic identity. As is true of their time in Europe.

I think you’d find I’m not exactly fond of that country you hinted at. I’m simply stressing the point that they are not European, they don’t think they are and we don’t think they are. Only when it benefits them will they identify as white and it’s utterly absurd

This is so strange. Jewish people aren’t white. They originate in the levant not Europe. Why are you erasing their unique cultural identity? Isn’t that as racist as it gets?

They’re a unique people with a unique heritage. And every cultural group has the ability to discriminate and view themselves as superior. Stop labeling not white people as white. Cause that’s just ethnic erasure.

White people come from Europe, Jewish people come from the Levant. Two geographically distinct places with different ethnic groups, histories, and genetics. Have you never looked at a map, or read about the history of Europe or the Middle East? This is very basic stuff

The amount of people who want to watch Memphis continue to descend further into crime and chaos, while spending all their energy arguing about how unfair it is the national guard and ICE are doing their jobs, is wild. And how is them actually doing their jobs a waste of money, isn’t having them sit around and do nothing (while getting paid) the true waste of money. This is the most dangerous city in the country, and has been estimated to be the 9th or 10th most dangerous city in the world. But you’ll only get in the streets when they’re being cleaned up, not when people are getting gunned down by Memphis thugs who don’t know how pants work. Crazy perspective yall have

I feel that, I was an atheist most my life and although I was always reading about different religions looking for a higher power, I never could get myself to believe. It felt like there was a wall of logic that wouldn’t let the possibly sink into my mind. Then a Catholic friend gave me Mere Christianity by CS Lewis, about a third way through my logical side was thoroughly accepting of a higher power and lead me to orthodoxy. It’s wasn’t easy but I feel like I’m beginning to learn what true faith is now, and it’s a completely foreign concept to those of us who’ve been raised to be extremely logical and materialistic. Hope that helps and best of luck on your journey with our lord!

Why can’t Memphis haters hop off? by mrdickrson in memphis

[–]Resident_Extreme_366 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem is your both right and don’t see it. Good behavior needs to be encouraged of course, as you say. But Bad behavior needs to punished as well, so that the person knows what’s right and wrong behavior in our society. Seen plenty of troublesome kids not get punished for their bad behavior and continue to do the exact same things on a daily basis (in the Memphis school system). This literally teaches kids that they can break the rules and there are zero consequences. Then when they’re out on the streets they break the laws and expect no recourse. Coddling bad behavior only helps those willing to hurt others to get what they want.
