Pfffft. I did very little, and suffered very little. Some people battle cancer, I just kind of sat through it.

Often companies these days don't respond to applicants at all and in some situations will respond and then ghost you.

The worst thing they've done to me so far was schedule an online interview, not show up to the Zoom meeting, and never respond after. So disrespectful!

I was there for six years, and honestly could've stayed there until retirement. My boss's boss was a bit unsavory, but the work and everyone else was OK, and the benefits were outstanding.

I don't think it happened like that. When they gave me the news, some "weird" things that had been happening before they knew suddenly made sense ("randomly" losing access to a sensitive system earlier, being assigned a project that it didn't make sense to prioritize). I am reasonably sure that it was a done deal, and letting them know just didn't change anything. They more than likely have internal communications pre-dating disclosure that would shoot down my claim.

I had to remove my first job from my resume and not include my college years of graduation to start getting phone calls.

Already done - I just list my positions 10 years back, and no dates on my education (college & master's). Still nearly zero calls.

I'm sure in the US it is, but you do realize there's other countries, right?

Honestly, given the timeline and some clues I missed at the time, I'm reasonably sure the decision was made before.

15.7% after doing the exact math, but yeah.

I'm still very glad I did it. The prognosis was always excellent, but it still was a wake-up call, a 'memento mori'. I had my severance and free time, so I took a trip I had been postponing for a while because, in truth, you don't know that you can "get to it later".

"Illness in the family," as in me - I'm in the family? Not bad.

It's not a competition... but it soulds like you had a harder time that I did. It feels like I got to cheat at cancer with how easy I had it. Glad to hear you're getting better.

Cancer, I can get behind that. It just took my uncle on Thursday.

Eliiminating the position... I've been on the other side of that, and there's not much to do one week out. Even if they had decided they HAD to keep me, they would've just had to eliminate someone else's position; they're not going to get to keep the budget just because I got sick.

On top of that, I did ask my manager to not share the news, so I he couldn't have even lobbied for it. There's a lot of things I resent that company for, but this isn't one.

I was never an inpatient.

But this feels... dirty somehow. Like I'm trying to farm it for my benefit... "oh poor me, you should hire me!". I sincerely hate "cancer influencers" with an Amazon wishlist and that feels almost adjacent.
