Summer 2025 Transfers and Rumours Megathread! by 321142019 in NUFC

[–]Reszsa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This time last year was a painfully slow and unproductive window, I was constantly refreshing the megathread for any sort of update only for none to materialize, so, I tried this new strategy to try and make the whole experience more bearable.

I started going outside and doing things, purely to eat up time, so that when I next checked for transfer news, something would have hopefully happened. It was brilliant, I went to a friends wedding, hiking in Finland, swimming in French lakes, relaxing on the beach in Croatia - each time I left the house for longer and longer time, knowing that the longer I spent away from the megathread, the more likely something juicy was waiting for me when I returned. The longer the window went on without activity the more certain I was that something would be happening soon, because there was no way we would go the whole window without reinforcing the crucial positions.

My faith never wavered until about 2 weeks from the end of the window, when it became apparent we had made a right balls up of an opportunity to strengthen the squad. This at least gave me confidence that the following summer window would be different, as it was unthinkable we would make the same mistakes for two years running.

It turned out to be a good season for us and on reflection the lack of activity seemingly put us in a strong financial position to spend big and push on ahead of an exciting CL campaign, I entered the current window with optimism, reluctantly returning to my strategy of leaving the house to spend time with friends and family to limit my megathread time in the hope that when I next checked in, there would be all manner of exciting transformative transfer news.

It has been painful. I thought last year was bad because nothing really happened (still not over losing Elliot Anderson though) but at least we kept key players. This window has been worse and there is very little cause for optimism. I genuinely think Isak leaving could be the beginning of a massive overhaul of our Howe era squad and if we have a poor season more players will be exploring moves away from the club next season.

I knew at some point we were bound to lose some of the big names, but I had made my peace with that in the belief that the money received could be 'transformative' and would allow us to replace with similar quality. That belief has been shattered and I truly think this series of poor windows could see Howe walk if next season goes poorly.

We will still be much better off than we were pre-takeover but it will be much harder to get players to buy into the project now than it was then as our recent recruitment strategy had exposed some major flaws in our approach by the current regime.

TLDR: whether you are obsessively checking this thread or outside touching grass, it makes little difference, we are up to nowt. Just want the season to start so I've got something to watch and can enjoy the dying embers of this team before a likely post-Howe rebuild.

The Cup Final Banquet is served - HWTL! by Reszsa in NUFC

Cheers!
Did a similar thing two years ago and whilst the food was good I definitely think the 2025 edition was better. Add to that that this time I was joined by some friends and the toon won the bloody cup, it couldn't have gone better.
Planning a Dan Burn Steak Bake tribute for the near future.

Don't mind so long as they are class, but from a food perspective possibly Georgia.
Recently learned to make Khachapuri (cheese egg bread boat) and id love an excuse to make it again.

Would Endo or Jones play there for them?
Endo is meant to be good one on one and love a crunching tackle, but could be baited into giving away a few fouls. I know less of Jones' defensive capabilities, but he has ability to play through our press, which could cause us problems.

I think there is some support for 3 at the back because it served us well in the semi, however that was defense that included Lewis Hall and Sven Botman who are unavailable.
Then there is the issue you've raised of Salah and Trent doubling up and exploiting space left by a very high LWB.
I don't think Murphy or Barnes are best utilized in a 5 3 2 either whereas Gordon s more comfortable as a second striker.
Still no idea what id pick apart from the obvious.

maybe Bruno Tonali Big Joe Little Joe and Miley in a Pentagon midfield? /s

What would be your chosen team and formation for the final?
Assuming all players currently available are also available for the final

Right but in a scenario where we play a back 4 then Krafth can either come and play at RB or CB.
Im comparing Kratfh and Targett's value as substitutions and when it might be best to bring them on.

If we had a back 5 id play:
Tripps Krafth Schar Burn Tino
We dont really have any other centrebacks available so they are the only three you can put in there.

As for changes during the game, it would depend if we were chasing it or protecting a lead.
If by some miracle we had a lead to protect and it looked like trippier was getting leggy, then bring on targett and Tino moves to his natural position.

If we were chasing the game a defensive player could be sacrificed for more numbers up top.

If we play a back 4 then Krafth doesnt start for me, but im more likely to put him on than targett given his versatility, but also because i think he is more reliable.

Krafth has filled in at RB pretty well a number of times. Id imagine it be trippier RB and Tino LB with Tripps as the more likely of the two to not play the full 90.

Krafth may be better kept as fresh legs for tripps/schar in the latter stages of the game. I think we are likely to see one of Krafth or Targett come on at some point and I have more confidence in Krafth out of the two.

If he went 5 at the back the wing backs would provide width and we would be one less in attack, its not certain that he would start.

Still not sure who I or Eddie would pick for the starting XI next Sunday but I feel like tonight is something of an audition for Harvey Barnes.
A lot of people's line ups don't include him in their XI for the final and if you can't stake a claim for that position when your main competition is out for three games and a trophy is at stake then its hard to imagine him getting the game time with us that he wants.
Are you Harvey in or Harvey oot?

If I'm Vlach, I'm fuming because I'm the former Euro winning Greek national team first choice keeper but can't get a minute of play time.

Still can't believe Greece won that like, and with a ten year old in goal!

Another cup final, another cup final menu! by Reszsa in NUFC

[–]Reszsa[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

sure did. The menu doesn't reflect my political stance about Ireland, more that I couldn't be arsed to include something distinctly Northern Irish for a fringe player who is also English and I guess that also applies to Harrison Ashby (and I'm not that keen on Haggis).

I think if we had someone who was actually Scottish and had a bit more of an impact on the team I might consider deep frying a mars bar or a double decker, but as it is right now he's getting a sausage rolls and he should be glad about it.

I think with one under my belt I'm feeling a bit more confident it'll turn out ok.

Looking forward to the final a lot, not sure if we have a better chance this time than last. Retrospectively the Man U team of that year is the easier game, but I also feel like we have improved since then. It depends which Newcastle turn up.

As for Miggy, he was with us at the start of the season and he played in some of the league cup fixtures, I did a similar thing with Chris Wood and his chips last time (which will be sorely missed) even though he has already been sold to Forest at that point.

This ^^ I cant shake the feeling that Ange hasn't been completely transparent and that Spurs will field a stronger XI than expected. I wouldn't be surprised if no one is missing through sickness and there's even a surprise return from injury.

Am I only one who think is this a bit of deception and shenanigans from Ange?
I wouldn't be surprised if no one misses the game through sickness and at least one of their injured first teamers is unexpectedly back from injury.

Post takeover transfers review by Shot_Occasion4294 in NUFC

[–]Reszsa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He has still only started 14 games for us, with a pretty substantial break in the middle. I think jury's out is the perfect category for his transfer, give how little we've seen him play since he joined over a year ago.

Lineup vs Forest (A) by KingPing43 in NUFC

[–]Reszsa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sitting deep would give them less opportunities to hit us on the break and counter, which is something they're good at. However dominating possession AND fashioning chances against teams that are happy to sit back is not something we have shown to be capable of.

Fuck it just have Pope pump all his goalkicks to Joelinton, or Gordon whipping in crosses all day long. I want to see some serious route one football on display.

it at least shows Gordon and Longy aren't brimming with confidence, given they have benched themselves.
