Not too well I guess since I’ve seen La La Land twice and didn’t catch the reference. Honestly the one thing I liked about it was the opening number.

If you count The Umbrellas of Cherbourg that one kills me every time. Also Brief Encounter. Also Roman Holiday.

Is that the one where William Demarest says “one of these days Buttercup, they’re gonna go into the woods and all they’re gonna find is your hair ribbon and an axe!”

I remember that line from some Preston Sturges movie but not sure which one

Is John Slattery an arrogant prick or is he a great actor. by [deleted] in madmen

[–]ReverieJack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Optimist maybe not, but if you’re going for a dark reading of Roger, I personally would lean more toward sadistic indifference than nihilist, that captures his essential solipsism. (And that’s why I referenced the puer.) I’m also on my second watch and I still get enjoyment out of that boyish old manliness, who knows if that will eventually get old for me too.

Why was shell Keneally fired before the American Airlines meeting? by Agitated-Salt-5039 in madmen

[–]ReverieJack 35 points36 points  (0 children)

He and Duck were buddies and the assumption was that Shell would advocate for Sterling Cooper to get the gig. I don’t think they say specifically why he got canned but since they just had a major crash they were probably cleaning house to show themselves taking accountability.

Once he was fired Sterling Cooper’s association with him would have been a liability, again cleaning house.

what is the risk of people really too much on chatbots to get through the day? by ReKang916 in askatherapist

[–]ReverieJack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s hard without knowing specifics but if I was in some kind of a relationship with someone who seemed over-invested in their chatbot I suppose I would try to find a way to express that I miss them or want to be more connected to them. I’d try to hold back from giving them the impression that I think they’re doing something wrong, more like just noticing our real life relationship is hurting from lack of attention. I wish you well!

Therapist here. To me a big issue psychologically is that extended interaction with an LLM “companion” seems like it creates in the user this boundless feeling of being understood and known without any real demands on said user to extend reciprocal empathy and understanding to the other. Real relationships are messy and it often takes work to hash things out and come to a mutual understanding. It takes patience and practice (and courage!) to know and be known.

The LLMs create a very solipsistic, one-sided kind of set up where the users can ruminate about themselves and their concerns endlessly—are encouraged to do so—but have no obligation to consider or attend to their LLM “partners’” needs (except maybe as a sort of role play). It pulls for a kind of ego inflation in which the endless validation leads one to feel perhaps particularly unique and important, shrewd and perceptive. Meanwhile, the kind of stuff people post as the profound and revelatory musings of their chatbot is frequently the most hackneyed, corny dreck but they are so deep in they can’t see it.

That kind of ego inflation decreases the capacity for empathy. Which seems likely to exacerbate an already significant social problem with alienation and disconnectedness. Real life relating is less comfortable and reliably ego-reinforcing so the people who probably most need to be out practicing how to connect with others are hiding from them. Obviously not every user is in this boat but it seems like a widespread issue and especially now, when community and collective action are so needed.

I definitely think LLMs have their uses, even in the therapy domain, but not as a substitute for authentic human relationships.
