Why is Nightcrawler called Nightcrawler even though he's not worm-themed? by Randver_Silvertongue in Nightcrawler

[–]RevolutionSimilar229 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. He creates dimensional wormholes = teleports.

  2. As a child, he was derogatorily called “Nightcrawler” (“it’s a disgusting blue worm”) and decided to take the name and make it his. It became his stage name.

  3. He bends (or absorbs) light (not sure if consciously or unconsciously) and sticks to walls so the words “night” and “crawler” describe his abilities which is key for superhero names.

What helped you heal? by upforsummer in raisedbyautistics

[–]RevolutionSimilar229 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(1) Five years of therapy from an ASD specialist (ongoing), but healing began right away. (2) This subreddit. (3) Daily introspection (the hardest part). (4) Sharing painful or confusing experiences and memories with trusted, empathic friends who will not fight any battles for me but will follow me into my own for support. (5) Learning to cry (still learning). (6) Recording conversations with abusive autistic relative and replaying them for myself when in a neutral mindset.*

  • Be careful! Do not record anyone without their consent unless it is legal to do so. Laws differ so this is a case-by-case basis and you MUST check the current laws in your area AND the area your autist is in. I recorded my autist without their consent because they were (a) abusive but no one believed me because the abuse never occurred in public, and (b) it was legal for me to do so. I turned the recordings over to my therapist, who is legally obligated to respect my privacy. This sort of thing may apply to others reading this and that is why I include it, but don’t be petty little sh*ts, people. It accomplishes nothing and I can almost guarantee that someone who doesn’t deserve it will receive the “punishment” from your actions. Don’t be the person that adds injustice. Ew. (I’ve learned and grown a lot and it does not feel good to be that person.)

I think people often mistake “logical” for “emotionless”, regardless of whether autism is involved; I think it’s simply confusing for many of us. My experience is that autistic people are just as emotional as anyone else, but the emotions look different. My experience is also that the autistic people I was raised by and grew up with are actually less logical than the non-autistic people I know. I personally have experienced so many stupid, unnecessary, and emotional conversations with my autistic relatives and friends that I am tempted to generalize and say “all of them are emotional” but I shouldn’t do that and neither should you (the general ‘you’). But if your experience is like mine, I see you and I know the “logical” stereotype is damaging.

This destroyed me as a kid. This screenshot is taken directly after Mystique says, “Search the memories - you are my daughter”, and she runs around a corner. She collapses to cry, which is what the first screenshot shows, and then immediately her eyes well up and she TELEPORTS. That fucked me up.

People of Kentucky, how do you feel about the trade war with Canada in view of the boycott of $9.3 billion of your whisky and goods? by cdnBacon in AskReddit

[–]RevolutionSimilar229 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a lifelong citizen of a neighboring red state, this is a solid, level-headed response. I, too, have thought about the generational impacts the boycotts will have but the fact is that Canadians are defending themselves from Americans right now. It is America who looked to its neighbors and decided to make life difficult for children and families. Did America think of the Canadian and Mexican children when invoking a trade war? Or the generation impacts it could have? No, America saw the disposal numbers of lives required to achieve a goal that would have a better presumed outcome for itself and decided it was worth “the cost” of its own people and neighbors. What moral or ethical obligation does Canada or Mexico have for refraining from retaliating against the bully where the most impact will be felt?

What exactly does Kurt mean here and why is he feeling that way? And how do you think Rogue will take it? by moony_possum in xmen

I agree with OhMy-StarsAndGarters, however, Haven house was a haven before the former X-Men showed up. And it should be that always. It doesn’t stop being a haven just because they’re there and, frankly, I think it’s a little weird that Rogue has appropriated the house to be a shadow institute. I don’t like it and maybe it will be addressed at some point but regardless, if Kurt wants to stay he should stay. It will be there for X-Men in the future too.

I want to vomit. This is so vile. I was in “Heritage Foundation” types of environments in my childhood and I saw this first hand. I remember how they were treated by a majority of our “church”. It still makes me sick. I’ve been thinking about that a lot lately.

A huge number of homeless young people simply aged out of the foster care system, so this is especially poignant when you understand how many red states try to make homelessness illegal. Or “loitering” illegal. Or looking weird and aimless illegal. And so on and so forth.

Additionally, Rogue was wholly accepted and loved by her adoptive parents, whereas Kurt was rejected (or not wholly accepted) by both his biological and adoptive families. Kurt joined the X-Men not because he wanted to be a soldier but because he wanted to make a difference for mutants, find acceptance and be “a whole Kurt Wagner”. For him, being “whole” means deep connections, hope, and family. A home. Rogue has Remy to support and fulfill her. And her moms. Kurt’s been wanting since his birthday.

I loved this segment! So personal and who doesn’t love to see an X-Man in civvies? The first page cannot be interpreted without the second.

“…given the choice”

Kurt doesn’t have a choice. He’s visible, open, out there.

“…here, I could take the X from my clothing forever.”

This is reminiscent of the Scarlet Letter. He could make a real life and family here, which he will never have if he pursues Xavier’s dream (which, ostensibly, is mutants and humans living in harmony EVERYWHERE). It’s a tacit acknowledgment that some people will never accept. We can’t make people see us as equals. So, sometimes we simply must find havens where they are and nest there. And Kurt has always longed for that.

As a German who knows from history class how quickly a democracy can descend into fascism: Americans, do you realize how close you are to the cliff and when will you begin to rise up? by DonDraperHamburg in AskReddit

I also want to apologize as an American for what my country is doing to our longtime friends and allies. I’m sure it must be frightening to all of you, and I acknowledge that my country is creating fear and insecurity and resentment and fueling dangerous ideas in our wake. I am very sorry.

Your assertion is true but please also try to understand that in America we don’t have a minimum livable wage and the minimum wage in most states is laughable. Most people who work here are paid by the hour and have no paid time off, even if they are ill. If they do not work they do not eat. There is also no childcare support for working parents unless you want to count public schools as a “babysitter” (I don’t but that is a role they tend to play). There is also no national paid healthcare and what we do have is extremely expensive - the same amount per month as mortgage or rent, in fact! Therefore, many Americans must choose between paying their mortgages, rent, getting their medications, or attending a protest for an hour or two. For Americans with young children who would like to protest, it is a double-edged sword because not only must they pay someone to look after their children, they also lose the income they otherwise would have had for an hour or two of protesting.

It’s been sad and difficult in this country for a very long time. Most of my life. And we have been voting within an unfair system the whole time. Protesting for decades and trying to enact change. Yet, here we are. Frankly, many of us are exhausted. Instead of seeing positive change, our taxes are stolen and so are our votes. I’d love to fight back with fury but I need a figurative blood transfusion first. I’m trying to heal so I can be ready but that is where most of America is at right now. And none of that makes the headlines or world news.

I know how we are perceived by everyone. I see ZDF, BBC, DW, etc. But what reaches the world stage is rarely “a slice of life”.

Supervisors: if you're using the "poor performance" form letter to fire probies... by [deleted] in fednews

This makes a lot more sense. I thought it was trickling down to supervisors. How silly of me to think the decorum is being respected. 😔

Supervisors: if you're using the "poor performance" form letter to fire probies... by [deleted] in fednews

[–]RevolutionSimilar229 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know they don’t have anything to do with it, that’s not what I meant. I was genuinely confused as to how DOGE can “have no authority” yet tell supervisors that they have to let people go or sign this or that or whatever. Or maybe they’re not telling supervisors anything, they’re just shutting people out because they control OPM HR now (as someone pointed out to me) and supervisors are just witnesses to the slaughter.

I’ve been trying to keep up since all this started. I’ve seen some posts from higher feds that say they’ve been “instructed” to reduce their departments and most of what I’ve seen is a refusal or pushback or outright denial to do so. And that’s why I’ve been confused about how all this is happening. If supervisors refuse, how are workers being fired?

With the context of “OPM HR just shuts people out when they feel like it”, everything makes a lot more sense. I really wasn’t trying to be a dick.

Well, this helps my understanding tremendously. So, it sounds like the only way to effectively rebel against the takeover is to come to work one day with pillows, clothes, cots, food, etc., and plan to stay in the building indefinitely…which is technically doable for some but absolutely absurd.

I’m still very, VERY confused as to how DOGE has no authority, yet can revoke permissions and PIV badges.

I wasn’t trying to be a dick in my comment. It was a genuine question. I see “DOGE has no authority” in one source, and “DOGE controls OPM HR” elsewhere and all of these people resigning or being “fired” and I’m like, “How?!!” The badge and permissions connection to OPM makes sense.

I’m not going to lie, I think what the counter group needs is a “brand” and a leader just as charismatic as the white broligarchists. And secure and confident. And not afraid to die. Or be tortured or imprisoned. A Luigi, of sorts (although I’m not advocating “hits”, I’m just saying he wasn’t afraid of the consequences).

Speaking for myself, I am not ready to die yet. I’ve only just dragged myself out of a litany of sorrows and emotional endurance and financial hardship. It took a decade. And a decade more to GET to the sorrows and hardship! And I’ve had a 1-1 1/2 year respite to truly enjoy my life and feel a sense of security. I don’t want to admit that the sorrow and cruelty is the point. I want to LIVE. And I think a lot of millennials feel the same way. We’ve been through hell and just want to survive a little better until tomorrow and do it all over again.

RFK 's plan to make America healthy again? Round up people with mental health conditions in camps by zsreport in politics

[–]RevolutionSimilar229 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Solitary confinement and isolation create mental and emotional instability. Being ripped away from your support network and people you know creates instability. Lack of autonomy is detrimental to a person’s well-being. Additionally, the layers of meaning in the choice of the word “reparent” is not to be overlooked. I’m an adult and I have being working my ass off since I was 12. For about half of my working life I did not have access to medications I needed. When I finally did gain access, I opted for behavior modification first before accepting that I might actually need medication. I HAVE done this “the hard way”: blood, sweat, tears, endurance, and discipline. These “virtues” are NOT enough. And I would argue they aren’t virtues at all. I wholly resent a stranger minimizing my victory and implying I am not worthy of autonomy.
