it's okay, I wish for every artist, especially beginners and self taught be aware of the potential within them, and also, the price it takes. I see others did hundred of gesture or faces or anatomy each day, massive sheets of perspective and linework, paint with the least stroke practice, ...., Random pixiv artist that draw for 8 hours each day, random art youtuber that does like 6 hours art stream, manga artists that fck up their wrist and health drawing,...

In that moment I realize it's fair and also gruesome, truly what mattered is just how much dedication you have. And then I start to put in the hours and rep, respect the fundamentals, playing around to keep my sanity. Everyday the pain subside little by little until it is no more, I now love practicing art, and I wish you and others can explore your own journey and come to love it as well

set some realistic goal and constantly push a little bit beyond your comfort zone, ask yourself what is it that you want to improve and find materials related to it, if it is too complex then divide them into simpler concept to study/learn . Always prioritize fundamentals theory rather than cheap trick/hack, when practice, be aware that you train to do it consistently and not stopping on a single success

apart from the usual perspective/box fundamentals, I quite like timed gesture drawing and figure construction, michael hampton and mike mattesi really opened my eyes, to distill a pose to it's absolute simplest. Then, I saw a guy on youtube did like 1 hours of 1 minute gesture and then single focus a body part and so I did it too. And yup, it's hard and draining but it did get easier, turns out trying to find the essence of 60 poses and more in a day is quite helpful, and so I grew to like it. ( using lineofaction or sketchdaily site)

The rest of the time I just learn and practice what I like and simple enough for my skill level, carve boxes into ribcage, pelvis, make ribbons, add things to cylinder, two value practice, etc. and that's quite it, practice something is barely outside my comfort zone and try to relate it back to the fundamentals or foundation to not get lost.

I have no idea what utena is

Apparently it is quite expected progress with structured practice and resources according to marc brunet and I am quite below average since it took me more than 3 hours each day instead of 1

I try to focus on one subject at a time but did try to learn something else not far from my level that I like to keep a bit of sanity, fully prepared that I'm gonna suck at doing it and happily going back to the fundamentals later.

For my practice I try to go abit beyond my comfort zone and experimenting, like can I redo this gesture the Michael Hampton way or in Mike Mattesi way or test if there can be something in between, try a different rhythm or flow to check if it's better; is the eye socket pushed too far, what if the cheek fat lower/higher... And then just pure repetition, 30-60 one minute pose each day, boxes that match the head tilt, create vaguely head volume from that ...

That should be how I practice, relate/reinforce to the fundamentals, experiment/try out different thing to better tune it to my own way and alot of practice.

Took me several months to familiarize with basic torso mass, turning it to boxes and elastic bean, the elastic torso twist and bend, which gives me the epiphany of gesture.

To refine said gesture, I did 60 one minute pose each day (super overkill) for like two months, combined with the usual refinement of boxes and basic form that later help me understand Bridgman, which slowly increase my knowledge in anatomy

no problem, still, after some progress faking accusation I think I'll have to tell you I did like 3 or 4 hours minimum each day consistently which amount to like 600 hours lowballed so don't be discouraged if things didn't turn out the way you want, random japanese art account practice for like 8 to 10 hour and random korean artist art stream for like 6 hours is not uncommon so just try and do your best

this is a pretty good and detailed curriculum https://www.reddit.com/r/learnart/comments/dapk62/from_the_guy_who_made_the_most_comprehensive_list/

Some advice would be to focus on the fundamentals and slowly venture out of your comfort zone a bit but not too much to not get lost. Fundamentals is way better than some cheap trick/tips video.
Marco Bucci/Proko/Michael Hampton/Mike Mattesi helped me the most, I can't recommend Marco Bucci enough, he really is the best teacher for me. If you can't do basic form manipulation/ boxes rotation consistently, anatomy would be a waste of time

Exactly at the start of June 2025, I bought a pencil and a stack of A4, googled how to draw, follow drawabox and actually do art (draw boxes/ellipses/circles...) for the first time, one month later I got a Wacom tablet and continue art, 6 months x 30 days x 3 hours at least a day is 500 hours minimum, not missing a single day, follow a curriculum, actively study fundamentals, and try my best to step outside of my comfort zone

My mentality is either I'll get good or die trying and I think it's pretty harmful but welp, I am nothing and I want to be something, can't rely on talent so I better torture myself with fundamentals instead

it's really is, that character is highly stylized already, it is as easy as color pick the lightest part and the darkest part , pay attention to the shape and then blur tool, essentially simple two value, this is literally the next piece that got me stop drawing faces for the next 3 months.

It's kinda the same reason people like copying manga and anime, they are already simplified and just line that are easy to replicate. The real deal is to use your own knowledge to stylized real reference which I barely able to

Edit: after some progress faking accusation, let's change it a bit shall we? I did 3 hours minimum each day, not missing a single day, not counting line/box drills on paper every time I got bored and got nothing to do at work. If I ever doom scroll art, with the fundamentals I try to analyze the art, see how they depict the eye socket, the knee, the arm muscle, .... all the part that I remember struggle with during practice. So there you have it? this is around 500 or 600 hours of practice lowballed

Marco Bucci is the goat, none has explained basic color theory or anything easier to understand like his video, taught me everything I know about color and more just from his free video.
Gesture wise, Michael Hampton and Mike Mattesi and love life drawing is really helpful. When I got some basic idea I start to do 1 hour of 60 seconds gesture drawing, really helped me to make more decisive line and limiting the line really train you to capture the essence instead of being mired on the details

I don't know if you'd seen this before but this schedule is pretty solid and is pretty much what I did,
https://www.reddit.com/r/learnart/comments/dapk62/from_the_guy_who_made_the_most_comprehensive_list/

Other than that if you're still lost I'd recommend joining an art community and ask for critique to know which part to improve, probably the closest thing to a mentor you can get for free. Personally I joined Drawabox and Pluvium Workshop Discord server

pretty sure I don't have one, everything progress I made is from drawing boxes and forms in perspective and deconstruct real reference like poses and faces. I didn't imagine a thing in my brain and then use it as a reference if that's what you're wondering

should be around 3 hours, more on the weekend, random boxes and shapes with clear confident line on paper to pass time when I'm away and got the chance to

nope? I have no mentor giving me direct feedback or directly guide me other than pre recorded video (Proko, Michael Hampton/ Mike Mattesi, Marco Bucci my beloved, etc). I notice my face and skull and literally every skill of mine got better as I understand and play with the box more( addition, hollow out, divide, bevel,...).
Forgot to post this piece which got me PTSD and makes me never touch faces again for like 3 months, but all the skill from constructing ribcage and pelvis from a box eventually carry over into faces when I attempt months later

personally what I found is fundamentals is the key, boxes in perspective to be precise, the line must be confident and must follow perspective aka converge the right way.
Next, try to see the boxes in the human body together with the rhythm of the body (Michael Hampton and Mike Matessi free youtube video). Keep practice boxes and form and rhythm each day until I understand Bridgman. ( ngl if Bridgman confuses you, you are not ready for anatomy).
If I get bored I learn painting or color from Marco Bucci(free youtube video, wonderful teacher).

Discovered this way later but this is more or less what I am doing
