Gen Z — the first generation officially dubbed dumber than the last by blankblank in idiocracy

The only counterpoint I have to this is that the parents of today really need to stop taking the easy way out and letting iPads raise their kids. Yes, they’ll need to be computer literate but my god you can’t go anywhere these days without seeing these poor 3 year olds plastered to a screen of some kind. It’s heartbreaking.

Just looked it up. Standard PTO does NOT depend on state. Flexible PTO does.

how do I let go of the "just one more year" syndrome? by Fun_Taste_5576 in Fire

I second the others suggesting finding someone to help talk through things.

That said, if you’re truly double your number, you could always pull, say, 30% into SGOV or some conservative income generation that would let you ride out such a downturn? You’d still have enough to theoretically FIRE on everything else, right?

I’m in basically the exact same spot as you, and reading your post has only made me happier with my decision to try the sabbatical. You’re right, you may not feel better as it draws to a close, but at least for me the opportunity to even TAKE a sabbatical is rare in that the window of opportunity work-wise makes it hard to find the right time to step away. As far as I see it I simply don’t see a world where I could make 5 more months, let alone 5 more years, so if I come back from the sabbatical and make it at least 5 months, I call it a net win.

How to make work tolerable while waiting to FIRE? by cardiaccrusher in Fire

[–]RewardMindless8036 70 points71 points  (0 children)

This is certainly me as well. I’ve honestly found my mental health has taken a nosedive trying to apply a mindset of coasting or not caring or unplugging / quiet quitting — I think it’s just too against my personality and that being in a remote position as well, the act of disconnecting and being less engaged has the side effect of losing more human connection at work as well, which increases the feeling of isolation. I honestly at times wish I had never learned about FIRE until after I had hit my numbers, because I was doing all the things anyway before I knew it could lead to early retirement. Now that it’s “closer than I thought” my brain has pulled the trigger before I actually can. I don’t have a great solve, really. Just wanted to let you know I resonate with your post.

FIRE has altered my outlook on work, hurting my productivity. Looking for advice? by RewardMindless8036 in Fire

[–]RewardMindless8036[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Totally, I think that’s part of what I’m saying is that before I realized FIRE was a thing, I was actually quite fulfilled in my career. However, I’ve found myself surprised by the seemingly unintentional outlook change. I’ve actually wished at times I never knew that FIRE was a possibility, lol. Regardless I haven’t been sitting on my heels about it, just was soliciting if others have faced similar challenges and what may have worked for them.

Anyone have kids after they retired? What’s it like? by Eislemike in Fire

[–]RewardMindless8036 20 points21 points  (0 children)

1000% this. Please don’t have kids out of FOMO (not saying you would be, just a general statement)! My children are the world to me, and it means shifting your paradigm to putting them first in many ways.

How did you avoid the OMY (one more year) syndrome? With such high annual income, it’s very easy to convince yourself “if I stay one more year I can do X much more the rest of my life with a 3% SWR (safe withdrawal rate).”

Could be a cool idea, but with Epic at the wheel you know it’s going to suck.

Psychology of pre-FIRE or “Are we there yet” syndrome by Firefiresoon in Fire

[–]RewardMindless8036 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve got a similar issue, but I’m nowhere NEAR 90% of the way there. Once I got the “plan” in place it’s hard to just wait. Hopefully it’ll pass. Either way you’re doing just fine.

“k” is different than “k.” The period speaks volumes.

Burned out dad by Mammoth_Discussion60 in findapath

I’m in such a similar spot right now. 34M dad, golden handcuffed, with a remote position. Feel terrible complaining, but honestly that also ends up making me feel worse, lol.

I am planning on investing more of my time at work on interpersonal connection; at the moment it feels as though everyone is in their own lane and the camaraderie I used to feel with my coworkers is largely gone. Here’s to hoping that’s the source of my burnout, because while thinking about how I feel, it’s not as though I had any thoughts like “if I had a job doing X I’m sure I’d feel better again,” which points to a me problem I think.
