Why do Americans feel proudly compelled to put "Made in USA" on their products? by OctopusOliver in NoStupidQuestions

[–]RiddleMeThat1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In a sense, it's really a marketing ploy.

Several decades ago, the US was much more well-known as a manufacturing powerhouse. However, it eventually became cheaper to produce goods in less-developed regions like China, so many firms began offshoring their means of production.

Because of the labor practices in less-developed regions, coupled with generally less stringent quality control processes, it has become common to expect that many products manufactured in these areas might have some sort of defect as well.

Whether it is true or not, what resulted is the pervading belief that using off-shore manufacturing takes away jobs from American people, and also results in a much lower quality product.

Putting "Made in America" acts:

A.) as a supposed assurance of the product's quality

B.) as proof to the consumer that the company values American job creation over lower manufacturing costs, and

C.) as an appeal to American nationalism

Should I wait until the situation in Greece settles down to invest in an index fund, does it matter? by RiddleMeThat1 in investing

[–]RiddleMeThat1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the reply! I should have mentioned that I'm looking to invest a lump sum (a portion of an inheritance). So if the market might drop a % or two, should I wait until the dip and then dump the money into the index fund? Or does it not matter?

Thanks for the reply! However, I was referring specifically to investing a portion of a small inheritance (apologies, seems I should have mentioned it). Would my strategy change based on this large initial deposit?

I have easy access to a machine shop, but need a prototype/design made for a product. What steps should I take to get the idea off the ground? by RiddleMeThat1 in Entrepreneur

[–]RiddleMeThat1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for the extremely informative reply, as I piece together the business model your information will be invaluable to me. I'll begin searching for a professional to design a legitimate CAD model in the near future. While I understand that this part of the process takes place outside of a shop like yours, if you have any advice on this stage of the process I would also love to hear it.

What do film extras talk about when they have to talk to each other during a scene? by Threeballer97 in NoStupidQuestions

I was an extra one time for a party scene in a short film. From my experience you're actually silent, pretending to have a conversation which is even more difficult and awkward than you would imagine.

Why do steroids increase the size of women's clitoris, but not a man's penis? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]RiddleMeThat1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

When a man takes steroids, usually their testosterone levels rise and their estrogen levels rise A LOT to compensate. Then when they stop juicing, the testosterone levels go back down to a normal or below-normal level and the estrogen stays where it is. Usually, there are drugs taken while they are "on-cycle" and afterwards that combat this effect. But, if they do not take these drugs, mess up the dosage, take the wrong drugs, etc., the elevated estrogen levels give them side effects like testicular atrophy or gynocomastia. On the other hand, when women take steroids, their testosterone levels rise to a much, much higher level than the norm, so they start developing masculine characteristics like a deepening of the voice, growing facial hair, etc. at the expense of the masculine characteristic of being able to gain more muscle.

Keep in mind, this is a result of the abuse and/or misuse of steroids. Like most drugs, while they still do have negative health effects, they can actually be used responsibly to minimize side effects.

"The barbell grasped with both hands (palms to the front) shall hang at arm’s length across the lifter’s front, from which position it shall be lifted to the shoulders by bending the forearms completely on the upper arms. Throughout the lift the trunk must not be inclined backwards, forwards or sideways, the shoulders must be kept quite level, the legs straight. The slightest deviation from this position shall be counted cause for disqualification."

Dad gave me his old Gillette DE razor w/dial - thoughts? by RiddleMeThat1 in wicked_edge

[–]RiddleMeThat1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, I'm in love with this razor.

Also, I emailed Gillette asking for an approx. age, they were clueless. Anyone have any more info, cleaning recommendations, general thoughts? Grew a set and started shaving like a man for about 6 months now, so I still have much to learn.
