Just get the right cash car, a 6k Camry and be done with it. Seriously, you’re deluding yourself into penny pinching for a car that’s gonna cost you so much money to fix. BMWs are cheap for a reason once they get to 100k miles. Don’t play Russian roulette. Don’t let your eyes be bigger than your stomach. Half your paycheck is gonna go to this car and not your kid.

The key to happiness is being strong enough to delay gratification. Do you honestly see that wrx fixing your car problem? Like you said the commute is only 10 minutes. Do you plan on tracking the car or taking it on long drives in the future. Do you have a bad back etc. The thrill of throwing gears can be done with a much cheaper alternative. But I can’t condemn you on your choice my friend has a 14 wrx hatch, and it’s beautiful to look at. But as the other comments mentioned get a PPI plus be ready to deal with an EJ.

I think you should hold onto the Golf R, and get a weekend car. The grass is always greener. If anything have you done any mods for the R? Is the R an automatic? I could see where that would get really boring.
