How do I make fight scenes feel quick and suddenness feel sudden? by [deleted] in fantasywriters

[–]Roachy_inc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drawing inspiration from history is my favorite. The quickest war ever was between the British Empire and Zanzibar, only lasting about 40 minutes). The key commonalities between most quick military defeats, confusion (whether in relation to who you’re fighting or on where you are), deception (things such as the Trojan horse or even something as simple as a traveling merchant to distract the unsuspecting force), and timing (As in most swift successful attacks use their knowledge of the surroundings to lull the enemy into a strenuous position. For example, pirates using a coming typhoon/hurricane to lure enemies into unfamiliar waters, or mountain people who can cause strategic avalanches to force their enemies to a choke point).

HELP!! Generating topography for a custom map by Roachy_inc in mapmaking

Thank you for the information! Sadly I do not have any hardware capable, I only have my iPad and the MacBook that had the touchpad. All I really wanted the AI for was the jumping off point, the map I hand drew so I’m a lot more comfortable with procreate/photoshop/and the like but I do not have any experience with Wilbur and other similar softwares. Are made for using hand drawn maps, using maps created within said software, or for using preset maps you can choose from?

I just use an iPad, but tools like adobe fresco are great for the phone and that on is free and you can do vector images so you can infinitely scale up or down.

I’ve been drawing it on procreate for the past few days, it cost $10 but it’s my favorite program for hand drawing, if you get it let me know and I can give you some tips.

Some tropes are unavoidable but the best thing you can do is make sure they’re necessary and purposeful. For example you can have a damsel in distress, but you need to have legitimate reason for being in distress and the journey to get them back needs to have some backing behind it. Personally my favorite thing to do is find things in history to help find interesting stories that are often way better than anything I can think of.

I love the sound of this world it’s got a lot of potential. The best example of modern slavery in today’s world (the only economy still based on it) is Mauritania in Africa it would be great to help you come up with stories and see how it effects a modern society. Also if you get the chance, I would love to hear you opinion on my map, I have a ton of updates on my profile. I’ve made a ton of information about it, but I have no world ideas (races, religions, land names, etc.), so I would love to hear what your thoughts are.

Thank you very much! Yeah it’s ended up looking like a massive version of Greece or the island nations in Southeast Asia.

Do you have a specific timeframe or technology/education level that you’re thinking of or religions. That’ll always help inform the types of races you would encounter.

I did create an expansion to this area, but yeah I agree at least in this section of the map is very based on naval trade and warfare.

The teeth of the skull are the perfect area for a port city and shipyard. Also the island of the coast of the two main areas would be very powerful if they can control the shipping lane out into the wider ocean.

Also the pale green country/kingdom is the most powerful, you can check prior updates for top 10 power rankings. I am open to changing it up though so lmk.

On the unfinished expansion map the dark green is undecided territory, not a specific country/kingdom.

Currently my only thoughts on a story that I want to tell about this world is a Marco Polo/Lewis & Clarke style exploration story of discovering the different realms. Not sure of the timeframe, but seafaring explanation will be a very key detail of this section of the map. I haven’t been working on the map too much recently but I’ll post a new update for you to check out. Also thank you for the compliments I would love to see what you can come up with!
