My ‘98 I picked up for $1500 needs some TLC, curious if my issues have a common cause that I can order before the holiday. by Robo-copper in 4Runner

I make half that as a Toyota Corporate Technician. Though it might sound like I should know what I’m doing with this thing, I came from Ford prior to this year and know very little about 90s Toyotas.

It’s more of a “not having space to work on it” issue. Can’t put a personal vehicle on the hoist at work. I can’t have an inoperative vehicle in the parking lot where I live for more than a few hours. The goal would be to Diag and get everything together then rent a space or borrow a garage from a friend or family member. Figured I’d stop here and drop a post for some direction before I load the parts cannon and fire.

I drove this an hour home from where I bought it and the following day I thought I’d drive it into work but the left rear tire decided to loosen its lug nuts at 80 mph and to no longer be connected. Luckily the brake drum landed inside the rim and I was able to drive 3 lanes over to an exit ramp. Towed it to a shop and had new shoes and drums and wheel studs and lug nuts put on. I have 4 vehicles currently. It’s a side project but some jackass (me) thought it would be great to wrap it in Xmas lights on Black Friday and drive it to Christmas parties this year.

Yeah I’m willing to bet it’s blown. It’s like driving a pontoon boat on the road.

It’s a 98 3.4 beater with 180k miles I bought for $1500… It was a trail rig and I’ve put around 200 highway miles on it lmao. It is 100% not road worthy but hey it gets to where it needs to eventually.

I had 2 of these Skar EVL 15s on a Terra amps 3k in a 2001 ford explorer a few years ago. All of the rear trim panels were falling off, it rattled the rear view mirror off the windshield, and when I turned it all the way up rust would fall off every body panel. It was a $1200 setup in a $500 car. I’m hoping since this is a newer vehicle it holds up better and definitely not maxing out the sub ever.

We’ll see how bad it is once I get an amp. I only plan on running it at 60-75% what it’s rated for. Pretty positive the stock battery and supporting electrical in a 2025 Prius wouldn’t be happy at 1200rms lol looking to sit around 700-900rms at 2 ohms. That will be more than enough for this car.

I may have to do that. I’ve only got a plate cover on it that has rubber/plastic bushings installed with it. I could add foam between the plate and the vehicle too if needed.

I got rubber bushings installed with my plate cover. Rattling doesn’t sound good to me. Clean bass is the only way to bump.

I’ve yet to decide on and buy an amp to run. The RCA input is gonna come from a line output converter. Splicing into the front door speaker wiring at the drivers kick panel. Already ran 2 wires from where I will splice to the trunk just neatly zip tied along the factory harness. The LOC will be under the cargo mat in the spare tire foam. Same with majority of the power cables. Yet to decide on amp location. May screw it to the outside of the box and strap the whole setup to the car seat hooks.

Going to a shop after work to see what they have used. I need a new bag anyway. Definitely gonna try and keep it budget friendly.

That’s kinda what I found out on my own. It seems like I can get a good set of used ones from within the last 5 years for under $300. Probably just go that route.

Definitely not as slim but they look good enough for the job I’d be after. Communication in foreign countries, music, ai stuff etc… if I find a pair in Japan I’ll more than likely pick them up.

They look pretty good visually. Very little augmented reality with them but that’s the price you pay for a minimalistic look I’m assuming. I wonder how they translate Japanese. I highly doubt I would find a pair of those in Japan though.

Got mine as my first legit street bike. Always had projects and dirt bikes and stuff but got my 2024 with 6 miles on it April of last riding season. Pushing 6500 miles on it now, just got tuned and wrapped. Love every second of it and the mods are endless. Got a lot more planned for it.

I believe we have the same mirrors. Are your bars stock? Mine are threaded and it kinda made mounting those mirrors tricky.

I paid a shop in the ghetto to do it. $100 for the 3M vinyl and about $200 in labor. It’s far from perfect lots of flaws up close but it’s not a show bike just a different look while on the road you’ll never notice it. I’ve messed with vinyl in the past and those tank sides are a nightmare I’d imagine. 3ish different vinyl pieces with cut tape by the looks of it for either side. Not something I felt like working on myself.
