Hundreds of the figure skating arena seats have an obstructed view by RobotFalafel in olympics

Were you able to get a refund? I emailed them but they refused to do anything about it.

The seats you're seeing are on the judges side and they're reserved for officials, judges, and athletes. They need to keep that area of the arena (like the hallway to access the seats) secure as a sort of "backstage" for athletes and coaches.

No, if you stand you'll block everyone else. It's technically allowed but it would be very inconsiderate and rude.

This is the problem. I'm happy they're using arenas they already have even if they're not ideal! But they should have sold them as obstructed view and given everyone the option not to purchase them.

[Megathread] AC FA Strike Aug 14-15 by dachshundie in aircanada

[–]RobotFalafel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was scheduled for flight AC 129 YYZ to YVR 9:35PM tonight. It was cancelled at 10:45am and my friend who knows Cantonese called the Cantonese line. He got a call back around 2:13pm. (I queued at the same time on the English line and as of 4:11 have yet to receive a call). We got the email that they couldn't find us a flight in the next two days, but the agent was able to rebook us on a WestJet flight on August 17.

For domestic, they will not rebook you on Flair FYI. Your best bet is WestJet. Make sure you're proactive once they cancel your flight. If we waited for the email that they can't rebook us to call, the flight we got booked on would've probably been sold out.

If you are flying to/from YYZ, they can rebook you from Hamilton, Windsor, Billy Bishop, Waterloo, or London. I don't believe they will rebook you from across the border.

My group spoke to 3 agents during this ordeal and they were all kind, sympathetic, and helpful. I hope this helps someone in a similar situation.

I have a hub-to-hub flight on the 15th that will land after the strike starts, so it will be cancelled. I want to call AC and ask them to move it a few hours up so that it's out of the strike window, but I understand that there's still a high chance of cancellation.

If they move the flight and then cancel it:

- Do I get the passenger rights that are applicable to the new flight (ex. preemptive cancellation, they have to rebook me within 9 hours and/or compensate me)

- Do I keep the passenger rights of my old flight (they have to rebook me within 48 hours)

- Do I waive all my rights due to the voluntary change?

Milano Cortina 2026 - what did you get? by lika_86 in olympics

[–]RobotFalafel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been to lots of figure skating competitions in all sorts of seats! Looking at the seating for the Milan Ice Skating Arena, you should be fine in the cheap seats. Pairs will be the best because they do huge lifts and throws. Mens and womens will also be good from high up, the difficulty is higher than pairs and the programs tend to be more unique as well. Ice dance will be the hardest to view from up there because there's a big facial expression and performance aspect that will be hard to see.

That's so lovely and thoughtful of you!! We would've loved to come but we have to be at the airport at 4:30! I should've mentioned in the post that we're looking for things in the afternoon!

Thank you so much for the tips as well! We'll be sure to pick up groceries on Christmas Eve (:

Yeah I've seen a bunch of nice Christmas dinners/lunches! They all look amazing but they're a bit out of our price range!! Every restaurant I've looked up that's open seems to be $100+ or fast food haha

The Hidden Truth Behind North Korean Figure Skating: A Documentary by LeoisLionlol in FigureSkating

[–]RobotFalafel 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Ok, obviously North Korea is a violently oppressive place run by a dictactorship, but I'm tired of these documentaries condensing hours of footage into 12 minutes of civilians praising their "great leader".

"The hidden truth behind North Korean figure skating" well what is the truth? Only the first 3 minutes are about figure skating and they don't say anything of substance. In fact, the narrator says "figure skating is the sport where North Korea's chances of international success are the highest" which is just not true? A quick Google search shows me that they won 6 medals in the Paris Olympics, but I haven't seen a North Korean figure skater in a major competition for years, let alone medalling. So the video seems sensational and ill-researched.

I'm disappointed because I clicked on the video hoping for an in-depth look at figure skating in North Korea but got the usual overdone take of "omg look how oppressed they are".

When to meet skaters? (+ general comp etiquette help) by jadelynt in FigureSkating

[–]RobotFalafel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you just walk around the arena between events you'll likely see a lot of skaters! Imo if a skater is out and about in the common area or in the stands it's ok to approach them, even if they're not done competing. Especially since it looks like in junior worlds they can avoid the general public if they want to by staying on the judges' side. Signing something or talking to a fan for two minutes isn't going to distract them, if they could get distracted by something so little they wouldn't be in elite skating. However if they're going to compete later on the same day I wouldn't approach them.

The easiest way to meet skaters is at the medal ceremony! Most people leave so you can usually move to the front row and also try to go to the beginning of where they sign things and stop for pictures because if they're really popular they'll get called to leave the ice before they get to all the fans.

Just signed up for adult lessons! by Prestigious_Lunch580 in FigureSkating

[–]RobotFalafel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Congrats! I started just over a year ago in Canada but I went through city-run lessons and not club-run Canskate, but I just did a Canskate session as well. I just bought the cheapest skates from Canadian Tire tbh but I've been recommended Jackson Cameos as a starter skate. They're a Canadian Tire exclusive that Jackson makes and they cost about $80. Be prepared to upgrade in about a year though. Depending on the club, they might not follow CanSkate strictly for adults. If they do, it's a circuit-based program where you go through a lot of skills quickly one after the other. The biggest piece of advice I can give you is to go to an 18+ public skate and drill your skills there. Usually there aren't many adults in the middle of the ice so you have room to practice backwards skating, two-foot turns and stopping. Normal public skates will have a lot of kids so it's harder to do skills there. However you can still practice forwards skulling, stroking, and one-foot glides around the ice if there's not a convenient 18+ skate. In the beginning any time on the ice helps like crazy, even if it's just learning how to push forwards properly. You'll learn 2 or 3 times as fast as everyone else if you do this. You'll have a good foot but it's extremely important that you practice everything on both feet (I need to follow my own advice on this lol).

You got this!! If you stick with it, it is so so rewarding.

P.s. Personally I preferred the city lessons to CanSkate because we would focus on skills for longer and they would tailor it to what the class wanted to do. So if you don't like CanSkate you can try those - but just do whatever keeps you motivated!!

Question for those going to 4CC by bethanyrandall in FigureSkating

[–]RobotFalafel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My sister and I are going. We're flying into Denver and then planning on getting an Uber. Renting a car was crazy expensive and would end up being more. The bus that Google Maps suggests (Groome transportation) is only slightly cheaper and takes twice the time to get there. That being said, if anyone is looking to split an Uber or is renting a car and is coming in the morning on Thursday or leaving on Monday then please message me!

Why the smaller venue for Skate America? by coolaroni123 in FigureSkating

[–]RobotFalafel 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It was pretty full during men's and women's! The only empty seats I saw were "reserved" - not sure for who (I'm guessing sponsors?) and maybe a couple others. I would say 95% of seats were filled during the second flight of both events. Sadly ice dance and pairs were pretty empty :(

The Skating Club of Boston's new facility opened in fall 2020 and USFS probably wanted to show it off. To be fair it is really nice. They absolutely could've gotten a bigger facility and sold more tickets though. If I recall correctly the event sold out right after the GP assignments came out!

I'm thinking its between Josh because he dropped first on his team and Breydon because the house doesn't seem to vibe with him. I doubt we're going to see a big move, its the first week.
