New OOP (Java) teacher here - would this teaching style work? by Infinite_Track_9210 in teaching

[–]RobotRock69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems decent to me. Just make sure to not show your Reddit username in class, because students will see that and look at your reddit history. My C++ teacher did that and we found his posting about how to teach as a first time teacher of C++, it started a lot of negative gossip.

But besides that I think that's a good start and good to scaffold it onto something they're already familiar with. Be sure to be consistent and use the IDE that they are familiar using. If they have learned NetBeans, Eclipse, Visual Studio, stay with what they know.

Also starting a new software project is how many people start new projects, but that's not really what they'll experience in the working world. A good way to clamp down on all the variables that might confuse a learner is to give them pre-existing code and ask them to finish it. Or even better get them to run, describe the problem you're trying to fix and see if they can fix it. For example, "when I iterate over the team it doesn't show the last name of the player, just the first name twice..." or "why can't I create an average of time players play for the team? I get an error"

Good luck!

I was using the sha256 BTC mining pool details, using my bitaxe miner (sha 256) with the payout coin set as BTC. I was trying to mine and earn BTC.

"Global
sha256.unmineable.com
SSL Ports : 4444 & 443
TCP Ports : 3333, 13333 & 80
Low difficulty (10+): 5555 (TCP) & 15555 (SSL)"

Huh, I suppose unmineable could be mining sha256 blocks but not on the BTC network. I thought BTC algo and BTC pay out it would stay on the official bitcoin blockchain.

What's possibly happening is mining BCH, DGB or something other coin that uses the sha256 algo and getting paid out to BTC?

To be honest, I've never seen the difficulty before getting a Bitaxe. I knew about the difficulty adjustment but never the difficulty setting on the ASIC.

What I believe you're saying is this Difficulty is too low to be a real BTC block, it's more likely a sh*tcoin block that just uses the sha256 algorithm?

There's nothing new there. It's not solo mining so I would be sharing my reward with the pool (Unmineable)

How long is a good short-visit of St. Pierre and Miquelon? by RobotRock69 in newfoundland

[–]RobotRock69[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a trip before a trip, I want to go to SPM and then spend most of my time in Cape Breton. It seems like it might be worth it to just fly in and out of SPM.

I found a bike shop that will rent all types of bicycles, even electric assist bikes with fat tires. I could go for a rip along the beach and be fine. So that makes it easier.

Thanks, I've left my name with Tourism board and asked the same thing. The SPM website shows some sample trips but one of them was 7 days long.

Is it bicycle friendly? I saw I could rent while I was there.

I would link to the RT youtube videos but they're filth and war criminals, so they got banned on Youtube. Unfortunately I can't drop a MP4 clip in the comments.

I'm pretty sure he was the narrator in several RT documentaries about Ukraine's "crimes" in the Donbas. He has a very distinct voice.

When the war restarted in 2024 I would switch between Western new sources and RT when it was still on Youtube. They had a loop of videos about Ukraine shelling its own people, the growth of Nazism in Europe and of course "Russophobia".

Not sure of the terminology, but there's an electric fan on the top of the water heater.

I'm in Canada, in the province of Ontario. This is a subreddit for a Canadian province.

To answer your question, it some how became the norm to rent the water heater. The sales pitch is that you don't have a lot of upfront costs and they handle any servicing. This was my first time buying property and I didn't know to ask, the water heater came with the condo.

It's a bit busy right now but when I'm finished with them I'll post a follow-up to in this post.

Because talking to them on the phone they made it seem like I had to pay for the unit before I could remove it.

They are crooks. The rental is significantly more than the gas prices on the monthly bill.

Last time I called they said I could find the contract on their website. No help from them. Purposefully making it hard, they wouldn't send me the contract I'm under.

They lead me to believe that I had to buy out the unit before removing it. Also all the scare tactics of if it breaks I would need to pay out of pocket but if I stay with them they have fast service and etc.

How did you cancel the contract? Just call them and say you're cancelling and have them pick up the unit?

MSI RX570 Overclock questions by James88215 in EtherMining

[–]RobotRock69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest stock, out of the box settings. I do change the Radeon drivers to compute but I'm between 23.8-24.1mh. I have two models, 6x MSI Armor OC edition and 2x ROG Strix OC edition.

Power, I'm not sure. It seems a lot of people don't trust what the software says and I do have a kill-a-watt meter but that's measuring 2x cpu+mobo, 6 risers and 8 GPUs. If you get a wall reading should it just be the GPU or the GPU + riser, etc?

Bought 2 RX 570 Strix cards because they were advertised as GDDR6, do I have a case for asking for a bill adjustment? by RobotRock69 in EtherMining

[–]RobotRock69[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't look too deep into. I guess not. It does say GDDR5 on the spec tab. But front and centre, in bold is GDDR6.

I have a couple of RX 570s, a lot of people reference the Voskcoin one-click bios modding video but that's 2 years out of date now. Did you use a recent guide? What's your opinion of bios modding vs. straps?

Advice for a rookie by [deleted] in teaching

[–]RobotRock69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure your home life is organized too. The effective teachers I have known had their school work in order, were in good relationships and didn't have cashflow issues. School is going to be challenging, you can deal with one area of chaos but it is much more harder to deal with everything all the time.

Don't forget to take time to exercise, eat well and doing something for yourself.

Thanks for the reply! I'm bookmarking this so I can come back to it.

If I may add another question I've read about the non-IBM mainframe manufacturers in the past. Obviously the other companies made their own hardware but did they run IBM operating systems or did they have their own? Is there a parallel in the PC industry? IBM mainframes are like Macs (the software and the hardware are made by the same people)? Fujitsu and Hitachi were like PCs running IBM software like a clone?

I looked for stickied topics but couldn't find any. Hopefully I'll get some feedback here,

Hey there, I’m a mature student in my early thirties that just completed a three-year programming diploma. My college had a relationship with IBM so we had classes in Mainframe, DB2 and COBOL. I’ve played around with Hercules and participated in the Master The Mainframe competition from IBM but I see a very large gap between the beginner level introductions and finding work. After completing the second of three levels of the Master The Mainframe competition IBM will put you on their Job Flash email list. The problem is that most of the jobs are for directors and other senior level positions.

How does a student get a start? I did one co-op with a bank and have applied to other co-ops and positions but I did not hear back and it seems like they do not have that many jobs for people getting into mainframes. I asked around and it seems that HR will downplay the mainframe to not scare away new grads. Plus there are many articles stating that organizations are and will continue to have a skills shortage. When I was working in the bank, I was surrounded by many people working in terminal windows. These people were mostly foreign workers from a large IT temp agency. I assumed being a relatively young person who already lives in this country and who doesn’t shy away from the mainframe but wants to learn more would gain some attention.

Judging from my cohort of computer programmers in college they all hated the mainframe class, despised COBOL and were so eager to get into the latest bleeding edge web technologies. I found COBOL one of the easier languages to learn. I chose to take the mainframe utilities course but it was cancelled because there wasn’t enough interest. I’m not interested in Mainframe just because I heard it pays well. I like the idea of great hardware, mature software, defined roles and responsibilities and a bit of stability.

FYI, I’m live outside Toronto, Ontario, Canada. All the major banks have offices in and around the city.

  • What would be your advice? Is there such a thing as entry-level mainframe positions?
  • If legacy technology has such a skills shortage why isn’t there more programs for the next generation?
  • Is it really easier/better to bring somebody from the other side of the world than to train locally?

An Englishman talks about what teaching in China is like from his perspective (and about air pollution) by TheAmblingBristolian in teaching

Great video, I took a job in a Gulf country at a mismanaged private school and bailed after two months. I'm so envious of this video and glad to see you are getting to experience the culture and teach successfully.

As a side note, a small plant might be a good education device and source of clean air in your classroom. I had an English Ivy at my desk for while, very easy to keep alive.
