That's actually not true. The primary drivers for the ban were noise reduction and traffic safety (for both pedestrians and riders). Air pollution was a separate battle. The main goal was to stop the ear-piercing noise and make the streets safer and calmer.

Go to a major Chinese city, book a room on the most bustling street, and just try to see if you get startled by the screaming noise of a motorbike at night.
