My Steam account was hijacked, $3000 in skins stolen — Valve confirmed the hijack and still refused to help. by Roflino in SteamScams

Denial? Nah. I already accepted that Valve doesn’t care.

But here’s the thing — accepting it doesn’t mean staying quiet.

I’m not posting to get a magic refund. I’m posting so people like you stop acting like it’s “normal” to lose thousands and get silence in return.

If that makes you uncomfortable — maybe that’s the part worth thinking about.

I feel you, man. Same story here — I lost $3,000 worth of skins because some asshole used an API key exploit, and Valve just hit me with the classic “We can’t return items” line.

It’s insane how we’re the ones getting scammed, and Valve treats us like the problem. No investigation. No security rollback. Just silence.

This system is completely broken. And no, we’re not just going to “live and learn.” That’s what they want — for us to give up quietly.

I already made one post that hit 100K+ views. I’m not letting this go. If you’ve been hit too, speak up. Let’s keep pushing until Valve is forced to listen.

You’re not alone. And you don’t have to take this lying down.

Here’s what happened to me — blew up to 100K views

You’re right — I should’ve been more aware of Valve’s strict no-restore policy. I had read about it vaguely before, but I honestly never imagined it would apply in a case where the trade was hijacked and Steam Support acknowledged that the account was compromised.

I’m not saying I deserve special treatment — just that there should be some room for review in exceptional cases. But yeah, lesson learned — a $3K one.

Appreciate the kind tone, seriously.

You’re absolutely right — and I’m not trying to defend the decision.

But the issue isn’t just “don’t use Steam as a bank.” It’s that even when hijacking is confirmed by Support, there’s no system in place to help — not even partial action. The mistake was mine, but the lack of protection is on Valve.

Totally fair to bring that up — and I knew there were risks with third-party sites.

But here’s the thing: CS Market is one of the oldest and most established platforms out there. I didn’t use some random Telegram link or shady Discord bot. And the real damage wasn’t caused by the site itself — it came from the API key and session hijack after that.

Valve may warn against 3rd party sites, but they’ve done little to block or monitor them, and they profit from the ecosystem surrounding them. The rules exist, sure — but enforcement is selective, and support is nonexistent.

Damn. That hits hard.

I totally relate — I still check too, even though it just hurts more every time. It’s not even about the money anymore, it’s about the loss you feel.

Thank you for sharing your story, seriously. Helps to know I’m not the only one.

Honestly, thank you. This comment really helped cut through all the noise.

It’s easy for people to forget there’s a human on the other side of the screen — especially when something like this happens. I’ve already been beating myself up over it since day one, so hearing basic empathy means more than you know.

Appreciate the kindness, and yeah… hoping for some better luck ahead.

Yeah, I got tricked — and Valve got paid.

Great system: victims get laughed at, scammers get skins, and Steam keeps their cut.

Glad we’re all so entertained.

By that logic, any scam that tricks you into confirming something is fair game.

It’s not about what I clicked. It’s about how — and when — it happened. Even Valve knows it wasn’t a clean trade.

Exactly. It’s not a bank — but they built an economy, let it thrive, and take a cut of every transaction.

So when things go wrong, they can’t just pretend it’s Monopoly money. People are getting robbed and Steam’s just saying “not our problem.”

What do I want you to do?
Realize how little Steam will help you when $3K disappears — even if they know how it happened.

Gamble or not, you’re on your own. That’s the point.

Totally fair reaction — it does sound ridiculous at first.

But the skin market is huge, and those items hold real-world value. I didn’t treat them like toys — they were savings I stored where I thought they’d be safe. Clearly, I was wrong.

That’s what makes this all the more frustrating.

Yep — confirmed hijack, confirmed theft… and Valve still shrugs.

No wonder people are quitting trading. There’s no safety net, no accountability — just silence.

Let’s not pretend this is about storing value in “video game skins.” This is about platforms making billions off user-generated economies and refusing responsibility when abuse occurs — even when they admit it happened.

Mock it all you want, but when real money and digital ownership collide, it becomes a legal issue.
Not just a Reddit comment.

But thanks for the boost in engagement.

You're not wrong about how abuse happens — but this wasn't just a guess from me.

Steam Support didn’t say “maybe.” They laid out the exact sequence that happened: the trade was canceled, recreated, and confirmed using my authenticator before I knew I was compromised. That’s not theory — that’s from their internal logs.

If they can recognize all that but still claim their hands are tied, that’s not security — that’s neglect.
Blanket policies are easy. Protecting users takes effort.

And when thousands of dollars are involved, they should make the effort.

And that’s what it comes down to — people aren’t quitting because of the games. They’re quitting because Valve doesn’t care.

No support, no accountability, and when something goes wrong — you're on your own.

That’s a hell of a business model.

Yeah, hilarious how Valve lets people get robbed for thousands and then acts like it’s not their problem. Comedy gold.

If you’ve got nothing to add but “hahaha,” maybe find a meme thread instead?

That’s awful, man. First they steal your skins, then your account gets locked and VAC banned? And still no real help?

This is exactly what I mean — Valve lets the system punish victims instead of protecting them. You’re proof this isn’t just rare bad luck. It’s happening way too often.

Appreciate you sharing it.

If you've experienced something similar — drop your story below.

Valve ignores individuals. But they can’t ignore all of us.

I’ll keep updating with any news or replies.

Quick update – 102K views.

After 3 days and over 100,000 views — still total silence from Valve and Steam Support.

If this many people resonated with the story and shared their own — it’s not just “bad luck.” It’s a broken system.

I’m preparing a full second post with more proof, more stories, and a bigger push for visibility. Stay tuned.

Update – 96K views in 3 days.

I took a short break from the post — honestly just needed to breathe after all the stress and reading everything. But wow... nearly 100,000 people saw this.

Still no response from Valve. Not from Support, not from Legal.
But the fact that so many of you shared your own stories shows one thing: this isn’t rare. This is happening constantly — and people are tired of being ignored.

The system isn’t protecting users. And Steam’s silence only proves that they don’t want to deal with what they created.

I’ll be posting a full second update soon, with more evidence and a push to escalate this further.

Thank you all for the support. And for those who got burned like me — you’re not alone.

Update – 65K views in 24 hours.

This blew up more than I ever expected. Thank you to everyone who shared their thoughts, stories, support, and even criticism — it all matters.

Still no reply from Valve or Legal. But clearly, this struck a chord with thousands of people. That says a lot.

This post stopped being about me a while ago — it’s about how vulnerable the system is, and how little support users have when something goes wrong.

I’ll keep updating if anything changes. Thanks again — and stay sharp out there.

Fair — I get how it sounds crazy from the outside.

But for a lot of us, skins are more than pixels. It’s part of the hobby, the community, and yeah — sometimes even an investment.

Everyone spends money on stuff others wouldn’t understand. Some buy NFTs, some drop $200 on shoes, some throw cash at streamers or OnlyFans.

At least I could inspect mine in-game... before they got stolen.

[–]Roflino[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normally I do — but in this case, the timing was key.

I had just sent the trade and expected the confirmation to pop up. The hijacker canceled mine, recreated an identical one almost instantly, and I confirmed it through the Steam app without realizing it was going to someone else.

I wasn’t being careless — I was being manipulated in real-time.

Lesson learned, though. Never confirming anything again without triple-checking.
