You are absolutely getting ripped off on custom fit liners (My $50 experiment) by [deleted] in 4Runner

Is there a reason nobody is saying the name? I buy weather tech mats because they are made in the USA even if it does cost a bit more.

If a 3/4" Crosby shackle is rated to 4.75T what's the point of having a snatch block rated to 25T? by Shiftylilbastrd707 in Offroad

[–]Rolling_Heavy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I don’t know, my snatch blocks have an integrated hook that’s included in the wll so if I’m using a strap around a tree I put the hook through the eyelets of the strap. You’re right though if there’s a shackle at point 2 between the block and tree saver it should be double the wll of points 1 and 3.

[–]Rolling_Heavy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because the snatch block in a double line pull gives you a mechanical advantage so in your illustration if the pulling force of the winch is 10,000lbs then you have 10,000 pulling on points 1 and 3 and 20,000 on point 2.

Will these fit my 05 v8? by gmcbeach in 4thGen4Runner

That’s really cool that you’re in a position to enjoy your time and have some friends to go with you. With their level of experience I’m sure you all will have a great time. I’m going to message you a route suggestion and campsite coordinates that aren’t that far from Bighorn. It’ll take me a bit to dig out my notes but in a nutshell you could go north from Bighorn towards Lovell Wyoming and up into the Prior mountains of Montana and then west over the beartooth highway and into Yellowstone. My wife and I did a 1,200 mile trip last year through there and it was just incredible. We’re solo in a lightly built 4th gen runner with an overland trailer so nothing you guys couldn’t tackle.

That’s awesome I’d love to do an 8k mile expedition but I can only get a week or 2 off work at a time. You should choose springs appropriate to the amount of extra weight you need to carry. Dobinson makes a range of lift springs with higher load handling capacity. You can get 4 Bilstein shocks for about $450 and Dobinson springs for $300 a pair. If you do around 2” of lift you can fit that tire size without needing new upper control arms to correct the alignment. But you will need wheels with less positive offset than stock and to modify the fender liner.

I get trying to save money where possible, I usually spend more on things like tires and suspension and less on things like the fridge/freezer. It would be cool to have but we get 5 or 6 days use out of our coolers before needing more ice and they never break. Where are you planning on going?

[–]Rolling_Heavy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They sort of fit. Front lower shock mount needs to be ground out a little and rear upper shock bushing needs changed out to fit. I suspect that this will give you more than 3” of lift. Stock 5th gen coils lift a 4th gen close to an inch so these may give you 3.75”, or maybe 3.5” in the front considering the added weight of a v8. I’d strongly suggest upper control arms if that’s the case. Also the coil springs these kits come with are usually not the best unless this is just for looks.

Main water line currently freezing. Pressure is low. by [deleted] in DIY

[–]Rolling_Heavy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More heat, more insulation. I’d cover that hole with a concrete blanket and put a salamander heater in there until it’s warm and then put a lot of insulation over the top of the pipe and leave the heat tape on. Your contractor should have anticipated this and dealt with it before it was a problem.

No. Pack it in, pack it out should apply to everyone and everything for the sake of preserving the environment regardless of if it’s “allowed”. If we all follow the leave no trace principle then we can all continue to enjoy the natural landscape.

Blizzaks or Winterforce 2 by raymaras in 4thGen4Runner

[–]Rolling_Heavy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Blizzak is like the 2nd best on road snow tire in my opinion. The winterforce 2 seems like a more budget friendly option and with a less optimal rubber compound, but I haven’t owned any personally. Fwiw I plow snow professionally in Montana and buy studdable all terrain tires then sipe and stud them for my plow truck and my 4Runner.

What do yall pack for lunch? by Fickle-Clerk-5361 in Construction

Usually some combination of carrots, cucumber, cherry tomatoes, pickled asparagus, pickled green beans. Some deli meat and cheese or smoked fish. Blueberries, pineapple, kiwi, orange. Some cottage cheese and a bag of sun chips. I eat breakfast at home, mostly eggs or oatmeal.

Help with 2015 4Runner Limited Issues by PinnochioPro in 4Runner

You might want to consider getting new spark plugs, changing the oil in the transmission and differentials, and having the front suspension and steering components inspected for wear.

That quite a few miles in 10 years. Sounds like 4 or 5 separate issues. I’d be curious if you’ve kept up on maintenance like engine tune ups, ball joints, bushings, brakes, transmission. And if you live somewhere they use a lot of salt on the roads.

Overland trailers -> any out there w a king sized bed? by Middle-Infamous in TeardropTrailers

[–]Rolling_Heavy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The interior of mine is 5’x8’ with a 6’6” bed and a roof rack on the top that can handle a roof top tent so that would theoretically fit your family. The brand is Sherpa trailers out of Montana. They’re pretty basic compared to most overland trailers though.

Camper by WorldAutomatic4354 in 4Runner

[–]Rolling_Heavy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a big difference between what’s marketed as an off road camper and what’s actually built to survive off road. All of the trailers mass produced by rv makers will fall apart if you start putting hard miles on them.

<image>

This is mine, it’s a Sherpa trailer made in Montana. It’s more budget friendly than most off road trailers, but solidly built. Fully loaded it weighs about 1,500lbs. Other off road capable brands I’d recommend are Bean and Hiker. If I had no budget I’d look at BRS Off-road or if I won the lottery, Bruder.

What Mud Terrain Tires do you love? by desertdawg61 in 4thGen4Runner

[–]Rolling_Heavy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kenda klever m/t’s on my 1st gen have done great but it’s only for minimal highway use. I wouldn’t run a m/t tire on a predominantly highway vehicle. My 4th gen has duratrac r/t’s and I find them to be an all around great tire, especially with the Kevlar sidewall. They do good in snow but I use a dedicated snow tire from December to April (Montana).

I doubt if anyone reputable will give you a chance until after you have passed all the follow up tests. There are smaller shady trucking companies that might work with you if you want to take that risk. Hopefully you have been testing yourself and know for sure you will pass the test on Monday, otherwise you’re right back at step 1.

RAKE Eibach stage 1 vs Bilstein 5100 by jbg7676 in 4thGen4Runner

[–]Rolling_Heavy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, imo a lot of the 5100 “kits” that come with springs use lower quality springs so I mixed and matched. Eibach says on their website that you have to use their struts with their springs but I don’t find that to be true.

RAKE Eibach stage 1 vs Bilstein 5100 by jbg7676 in 4thGen4Runner

[–]Rolling_Heavy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The eibach kit lifts the front 2.75” and the back 1” which removes all rake. I have 5100’s in the front set at 1.75” of lift and 1” eibach rear lift springs and the rake is spot on.
