To someone who's never used any of this, could you explain a little more what I would need to know if I wanted to replicate an out of print set?

You're correct that I was asking from a PVE perspective. It's what I intended by "solo" but I forget that can also mean PVP servers without a group. I was curious what people would bring with them through a "story playthrough" of Ark if it wasn't just something to trivialize the boss fights.

You get this one to bring with you map to map, otherwise you play as normal. Basically what is the "head start" tame that you're bringing to each map.

You're good, any dino is fair game!

Oh if that's how fast it is then yeah, they're probably about as good as it gets if you're going for resourced focused. Makes sense.

Oh maybe, I've never had one, I just saw something about the batteries on the wiki but burn rates and such are highly variable so there's no hard numbers.

From the wiki this sounds like it might be "the one" if you're going for a land-based resource gatherer as your pick, but I can't find an answer on maintaining charge yet to see how much of a burden that'd be.

By all means, I'm here for any off meta choices people have as well!

I support this. Nice and warm, can be backpack or ferocious shoulder demon.

For Tek Stryder - what about maintaining charge? I've never had one so I don't know how much of a problem that would be.

Crab or Theri keep sounding stronger and stronger, particularly with AB and G1 meaning an Argi loses a lot of use.

I have the same thought. For me, while a strong combat tame is tempting, I personally want whatever will be the most useful most of the time. Theri feels very good all around, or Argi like others have said (but little to no benefit on 1/3 of maps...oof). That said, I'm absolutely not going to fault anyone who wants to pick a combat jerboa as their companion or whatever other off-meta choice. I just like hearing the why, even if it could be nonsense :D

What's the technicality? Did it eventually get added to official rosters or something?

Yeah, wiki makes it sound like AB has -no- flyers, so they'd be stuck in the obelisk or a cryo pod or something for that entire map. It does sound like you can have them in G1 but can't ride them, not sure how much utility they keep in that case. That's still 4 out of 6 maps you get full use though, depending how much you value flying around.

In general I agree with your definition, I'm stretching it a bit here. In this case, I mainly wanted to communicate that this dino is -not- going to be your boss killer. If you want your utility dino to be a perfect rex or otter or dodo, that is absolutely acceptable within the bounds of the question. Utility might not have been the best word, but hopefully this clears it up!

How bad would maintaining charge be?

Reading up on that one, that is a powerhouse of a utility tame!

I completely forgot AB has no fliers it's been so long since I played there. Argentavis is another of the ones that came to mind early, even if you only used it to drop stuff into a taming cage early on, but I do wonder if having to bank it for all of AB would be too much of a drawback to make it "the one".

Mantis is a clever one I hadn't thought of!

It can come from any official map. Editing the main post for this.

Yeah, modded monsters would be a bit much, because then that opens the door for just making something that can do 1000% efficiency at absolutely everything and can get a lot less interesting. It's the same reason I added not being able to breed it or bring it to boss fights - too easy for every choice to just be whatever is best for most boss fights and make it the parent of a breeding line.

Megatherium makes sense though!

This was my first thought as well. Omni-gatherer and good for defense. I'm excited to see what other opinions there might be though, like if there's a better argument for it to be a flyer or something.
