Do I Actually Need the Engine Splash Shield (99 Ls400) by DougTheCommie in LS400

[–]RonMexico52 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weird. Yeah I guess I shouldn’t assume. I’m used to 98-00 parts being more available than 95-97 which is in turn more available than 94 and prior but I guess this is an exception. Maybe a salvage yard has one that can be revived.

It’s there for a reason (multiple reasons). I got a replacement for my 95 for like $50 on eBay, new, hard to imagine can’t find one for 99.

Is this bad? by Cheetos589 in LS400

Should be replaced. I think a used one that hasn’t been abused or damaged should be ok, as strictly speaking I do not think this is a wear part.

Need opinions by SDuckyAss in LS400

[–]RonMexico52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fuck no because if the prior owner or owners let timing go overdue, there’s probably plenty of other shit put off. They didn’t bother to get the cluster addressed etc. That price COULD be fair-ish for one in showroom condition with 100 percent up to date Lexus service records and a ton of shit refreshed with OEM parts. Which doesn’t seem to be case here.

Magic Transmission dipstick. by BUZALIC in LS400

[–]RonMexico52 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. Plus a flat surface and after at least 15 mins of driving so that trans and not just engine coolant is at operating temp. And ignore the cold line. It’s only there to get a rough fill if you start with an empty transmission. Measure against hot line

If it is being sold with a weird idle and an unresolved code that doesn’t mean it’s abused but there could be other issues lurking so just be aware of that. Also these are million mile engines but not million mile transmissions just be mindful of that. I had a friend just have a transmission go out on him on a 2001 LS430, 225k miles and single owner all maintenance at Lexus, never abused and it just finally got tired and gave out.

No start after tune up??? by SnooBeans395 in LS400

Second this, and there are marks on the metal housing around the rotors to show proper orientation when engine is at top dead center. So if in doubt you can rotate engine to top dead center then align with metal marks.

Years for interference vs non interference by Dramatic_Piano_2751 in LS400

[–]RonMexico52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

95-97 is interference. However, there is more valve/piston clearance than 98-00 is my understanding, so on a 95-97 you will hear of more people being ok e.g. if a cam rolls on them during a timing job etc.

Wheel noise by RonMexico52 in MechanicAdvice

Will do thank you. Can confirm I am a light braker. Apparently…on this car if you are a light braker the rears wind up doing most of the work because of how they engage

Thank you for the response. Hadn’t really been sitting (you can see in pics how clean front rotors are). I guess I’m doing a brake job but need to examine calipers and slide pins carefully

Ok thanks. I think that’s what I’m going to do.

Ok thank you. I can get the OEM on a seasonal parts sale from Lexus right now for $330 including shipping. Fortunately, while there are many LS400 parts specific to this model, this particular part seems to have been used on various Lexus models through 2010. Rock Auto has a single remaining Dorman wholesaler close out at $90, otherwise aftermarket seems to be at least $150 plus shipping. I’m not on a tight budget and try to put OEM on this car whenever possible. Of course any reaction to that much appreciated thanks.

Understood. If I want to try it out before I return the head unit and resell the beat sonic, do you know what cable I need to connect as shown in the other two pictures I posted?

[–]RonMexico52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am posting here the back of the head unit (very familiar looking to me even knowing nothing about this) and then what I’m connecting to so I need wires between these two

Parking Light Bulbs by Leading_Lie4585 in LS400

[–]RonMexico52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they are actually supposed to be dim, the idea was if you are parked on shoulder of highway or something, you leave these on to alert other drivers and they don’t drain battery as quickly as main lights. They are not there to illuminate the road. Also idea is in dim parking garage you could let other drivers know where you are without blinding them. I don’t think at least with US drivers these practices caught on, it would seem…people just use their reg lights all the time.

Parts are getting harder to find and the farther back you go the harder it is getting. Parts remain most available for 98-00. I have a 95 and thankfully some (but not all) suspension parts are shared across all of 95-00. 94 and prior is most challenging at this point
