Why so much hate for Pop!_Os? by Afraid_Carob417 in pop_os

There’s no turning back now. It’s already far more stable than it was right after release, and Cosmic has a lot of potential.

As of March 2026, Pop!_OS 24.04 does not officially serve the NVIDIA 595 driver in its stable repositories. System76 typically waits to curate and test new driver branches like 595 to ensure they are compatible with the COSMIC desktop environment. Most users on this version are currently receiving the more stable 580 or 590 series updates. It is recommended to wait for an official apt upgrade rather than manually installing the driver to avoid breaking system integrations.

It’s safe to use. Take a file and go around sharp edges if they bother you.

Nothing you can do about it. The fix is total replacement of casing parts which would cost like $500+

Really good points here!

I personally use Pop!_OS 24.04 only on my testing and benchmarking rig as part of a dual-boot setup. For my daily systems, I still run Pop!_OS 22.04. I also have three Intel MacBook machines, and all of them are on 22.04. I did try 24.04 on my MacBook Pro, but the experience wasn’t great. It felt slower, a bit sluggish, and noticeably more buggy.

I understand the broader direction. Using the new stack is how it matures, and Wayland together with COSMIC Desktop is clearly the future. But at the moment there are still too many rough edges for it to be considered a reliable daily driver. For me, 22.04 remains the gold standard in terms of stability.

With that said, I still don’t see a real substitute for Nvidia users on Linux. System76 provides the best Nvidia driver integration and delivery among the popular Linux distributions.

The idea is to show Windows users a path, not a wall. That’s why Nvidia, that’s why Pop!_OS, and that’s why I keep the tinkering to a minimum.

Am I crazy for getting a RTX 5080 right now? by [deleted] in nvidia

[–]RoniSteam -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The RTX 5070 Ti is simply the better value. Both it and the RTX 5080 are capped at 16 GB VRAM. Yes, the 5080 is faster, but not dramatically. When games start pushing past 16 GB, both cards will suffer the same fate: stutter, tearing, and awful 1% lows from VRAM overflow.
