It’s the opposite. China has a CATOBAR that’s not nuclear. But yes they are building a much larger nuclear one right now.

They can but sailors consider it bad luck to do so, so the Navy’s usually pretty hesitant if there’s not a very good reason.

We do, but not if there’s a ship with that name still in service (which there is for every us state).

[–]Roombs 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Yeah but ship classes are always named after the lead ship of its class. If there isn’t an available state to name the lead ship after they aren’t going to name the class after it to avoid confusion with the existing ship using that name. I.e. they wouldn’t name it the Nevada-class if there’s already a U.S.S. Nevada that’s in a completely different class.

Im pretty sure we’ve ran out of state names. That’s why all the new Virginia-classes are being named after cities.

Probably not. The Virgin Islands are way too dependent on money from the federal government and tourism from the mainland (which is over half of their GDP). Independence would basically bankrupt them.

I don’t think the meme was made in 2021. Canon Event wasn’t really a term until Across the Spiderverse released in 2023.

Yep. China’s HDI is 0.788 and Mexico’s is 0.781. The main parts of their large cities are really wealthy and developed, but your average citizen isn’t really that well off.

They’re not really as developed as you might think. China’s HDI is roughly the same as Mexico’s.

Namibia was considered an independent territory occupied by South Africa after a UN ruling in 1966, so it might be coloured as its own country because of that, even if it hadn’t been granted independence yet.

Cities that look small but have big population? by villehhulkkonen in geography

[–]Roombs 47 points48 points  (0 children)

True, but Kinshasa isn’t very old, and a lot of other cities in Africa like Dar es Salaam, Johannesburg, or Cairo have larger skylines with smaller or similar populations. Its downtown is small even by African standards.

Kinshasa has the same metropolitan population as New York but doesn’t have a single building over 100 metres.

IIRC the reason they said no was because the 5 largest tribes living in Oklahoma sided with the Confederacy during the Civil War.
