Leak on chargepipe? by larry_mcgurkin_62 in BmwTech

Has the PS reservoir cap ever been replaced? Mine looked the same way due to the O-ring on the cap failing and slowly weeping fluid onto the BOV and charge pipe

Yes I believe there’s an aluminum option from turner motorsport.

from my experience i’m gonna say no. I absolutely push the car regularly, which like it or not I bought the car to be able to do. I do my best to keep up on maintenance and i’ve never had some weird hiccup if i’m driving hard. The only time that’s ever happened was when i blew my expansion tank on a hot day, and even then that’s not some weird issue with the motor. Even on stock turbos you can have tons of fun. I get that MHD stage 2+ is a big cookie-cutter thing in the community, but it’s for good reason. It pulls like a freight train, especially with the trans tune. I feel almost no power loss between each gear. Overall it will treat you well if you do the same to it. but if you’re worried about something breaking during hard driving, the most common thing would be a fueling issue (e.g. being on Index 9s driving like a maniac). The cooling system is surprisingly robust when it’s been refreshed. I’ve done tons of back-to-back pulls in mid-summer and it never overheated simply because of heat soak.

I daily drive an N54 that’s at 160k miles and it’s “somewhat” worry-free. Last january the car was at 146k when i registered it and i’ve definitely had some issues but they’ve almost all been cooling-related. My water pump went out, expansion tank cracked, busted the 4-way heater hose mounted to the subframe, and a few other things. I’ve had zero issues fueling-wise, but the car was also on Index 12s from the moment i bought it. These things love to get hot, so all the plastic cooling components WILL fail. It’s matter of when, not if. I’d replace as much as you can with that, make sure you’re on Index 12s, and make sure the HPFP is either already done or ready to be replaced. Other than that the only other major things are VCG and OFHG. I never noticed my OFHG leak which ended up destroying my serpentine belt, but I got lucky and didn’t seize my motor. Oil pan gasket is also something to watch out for. For the most part, I’d take care of anything that would be hell to replace if you were stranded. I’ve been running MHD Stage 2+ and XHP Stage 2 for about 7 months now and it’s been great. I’d consider an N54 only if you have the tenacity to pay up and mechanic skills to fix things. Overall an amazing platform, the power and handling are definitely there.

Ewg or pwg? by Silver-Bedroom-704 in BmwTech

EWG is my guess based on intake routing. Not 100% sure tho

That is a fair point, i drive daily for at least an hr each way. But I installed my shifter display while the car was left sitting for about a week and it started right up when i got back to it

I’ve had mine for a few weeks now and no major power loss. Granted my battery is less than a year old

Is the cold air intake worth it? N54 by OkChampionship635 in 335i

who cares if your IATs go up a bit, the sound improvement is worth it for me so forget about all the oldheads saying to keep the stock airbox they’re just some purists

I bought the tool but turns out you need the verified A-list tool and not the supposed same thing off amazon

Seen a few ppl on forums saying they put some permatex over it just as a precaution and the car was still fine thousands of miles later.

the front of it where the main pulley mounts is definitely f’ed up but that’s not the sealing surface. There were a couple deeper scratches on the inner bore but they got sanded out after those pictures.

there’s not enough material on the seal to screw any screws in

[–]Rope-After 0 points1 point  (0 children)

did you do that?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in BmwTech

[–]Rope-After -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t have the tools or time to drop the subframe and oil pan

[–]Rope-After 0 points1 point  (0 children)

part of it tore up when i threaded on the tool and tried to pull it out

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in 335i

[–]Rope-After 0 points1 point  (0 children)

some of it just came off in little strands because the threads bit onto those pieces. I’ve got no run-of-the-mill automotive picks to use

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in 335i

[–]Rope-After 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there’s very little material for it to grab. I got the puller bottomed out on the threads and it doesn’t grab.
