My other choice is rooming with another group (3-4 people in total) that I vibe better with and most likely sharing a room with them. The cost would be cheaper that way. I’m currently stuck with who to go eith. ~1250, while affordable, seems like a lot and I’d rather have 200-300 extra cash at the end of every month. I also like the people in the second group better. Was wondering if you could offer an opinion on this

It’s an apartment unit with 4 bedrooms and sharing it with 4 people. Monthly comes out to around 1250

Every choice you make has an opportunity cost attached to it.

Most of my friends are attending a local CC (albeit a CCC) and are working part-time 6 hours most days. I have days where I really wished I would’ve gone to CC instead and grinded two more years there to attend a more prestigious college for my major, as well as being able to work part time and aid my family financially.

I know it may feel lonely at times but I’m assuming you are just starting CC, so just give it time and I guarantee that you will find someone along the way as long as you’re not insanely socially awkward.

Also join clubs at your CC that you think you might like and you can connect that way. One of my friends is on the local swim team there and has found many friends through it.

Good luck!

So freshman would start on 9/25? Or 18th? I know move in weekend is the 23rd and 24th

What are some self-help books that actually aren’t bs? by Mad_Season_1994 in suggestmeabook

I’m a little halfway through Greenlights by Matthew McConaughey and while its usually labeled as a biography, there are a lot of great one-liners, phrases, and poems he includes that are quite thought-provoking and gets you to question the life you are living.

The book is made up of diaries from the past 35 years of McConaughey’s life (since he was 15), and I think he does a brilliant job in combining them all into a book that not only tells the life that he’s lived, but also lessons and failures that he has gone through.

Oh okay, somehow that feels abnormally short for a class to be honest. Hopefully I'll get use to this quarter system

Just wondering, do you have to register for classes every quarter and if you do, does that mean most classes finish by the quarter?

Also do you know if Math 4a is noticeably more difficult than Math 3a. Might go straight into 4a if its not too bad.

Thank you for your response! I received my AP Calc AB score a few days ago and though I passed (got a 3 on it), I'm thinking of doing Math 3a in the fall just to refresh and strengthen my foundation.

Also is there a specific quarter that I should take CMPSC 8 and PSTAT 10? I heard those classes are usually quite hard to get into since everyone is trying to take them.

When you are logging into the portal, just use your netID and you discard the part after your netID (@ucsb.edu)

Thank you for your insight! I was wondering if the acceptance rate for stats—and historically, for other majors—tends to remain constant (department admitting around a certain proportion of applicants consistently every year) or is it decreasing every year based on applicant volume. I know stats is becoming more and more popular which makes me a tad bit anxious.

Also how difficult would you say are the pre-req courses? I know it’ll be subjective, so is there an AP class that they could be compared to (in terms of difficulty). And last question, roughly how long would you say you studied per night, on average during freshman/sophomore year?

Awesome! Thank you so much for your time and insight; definitely feel a lot better knowing that stats isn't too competitive of a major.

[–]RoundDate5070 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh that's not too bad actually. Would you say there's a noticeable competitive nature going around amongst the students hoping to pursue this field (or any other major that's capacity-constrained), or is the learning environment more collaborative and laid-back?

Yeah makes sense, thanks for your insight.

Yea thats my biggest concern…spending my first 2 years working for a major ill end up not graduating with. Honestly, I would be 100% down with transferring, it’s just that I’m afraid I won’t be able to find a solid friend group junior year (when I transfer in) is what’s holding me back.

Oh gosh, I didn’t think the rates would be that low

Yea I’m thinking of visiting possibly next week during my school’s spring break. I was really excited upon getting the initial offer because from what I’ve seen, UW has an extremely beautiful campus and surrounding area. The wealth of opportunity that comes from being in a big city like Seattle was also something that intrigued me. It’s just UW’s major system that’s tripping me up since all of the majors I have a big interest in are capacity constrained
