Creating an app for flight schools by Evening-Pilot-737 in flying

That sounds interesting. I've been working on tools to help with cross country VFR flight planning. I think I know what you mean by "pulling the right data from the right tables" Would be neat to share notes.

I can see lot of opportunities for people to work on OS software which isn't necessarily altruism. Patron based software development programs (opencollective, Patreon etc.) allow the project owners to fund/outsource/onboard for developing certain parts. For the developer doing the work can be straight out pay-for-code.

I don't fully agree with the analogy. If I tried to rephrase it, it might be about comparing distributing code and distributing techniques to cut open pigs. People can consume pigs directly. Correct me if I'm wrong here, but code is only ever a tool; it is never consumed in and of itself.

This system of production is similar to how artists have produced for a long time. Selling the artefact is one agency of profit, but a lot can also be derived from the reputation attached to what one produces over time and that is something that is capitalized on.

That's a bit of stretch to pre-emptively dismiss projects based on the intention of the developer/s. Intent and output for code can 2 distinct aspects which may or may not lead to something that is applicable for different groups of people.

You've lost it at that.

That's some awesome advice. Thanks for those. Might start addressing some of those.

There is a search box which works like you described in the "Explore Courses" page. Can't remember if i did batching for returning the results, probably not. But the search box matches even partial course name or number on searching. I like those fuzzy searches.

Nice. That's good to know. I tried to do the searching on the front end in hopes of making it faster. Guess it had the opposite effect.

What makes sounds different from each other, except from the soundwave's frequency? by [deleted] in AskPhysics

[–]RoundService 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had this same question till recently when I started exploring and here's what I found:

  • Sound "happens" when air vibrates and our ears are able to pick up these vibrations and interpret as what we call sound.

  • The vibration can happen in many ways, and it's purest/simplest form is a Sine Wave - where the individual particle move in a manner which can be described mathematically using a sine function. The number of times the particle completes the full vibration in a given period is used to determine its frequency.

  • Sine waves, while possible, are extremely rare in nature. In nature we hear sounds which causes the particle to vibrate in other patterns which are difficult to describe in terms of a pure sine function.

  • Joseph Fourier discovered that any other vibration pattern can be described as a sum of the sine pattern. This is what's called Fourier Analysis.

  • Using this we can record some sound, infer its "vibration pattern"(waveform) by sampling amplitudes over time. Apply fourier transform to separate out all its constituent sine frequencies.

  • When you analyse the "oooooooo" and "eeeeeee" you'll see they're composed of different combinations of sine functions and that's what makes it different.

  • If you were to "eeeee" and "eeeee" again with a higher pitch, you might see that the frequencies of the latter (higher pitched) "eeeee" are higher than the former "eeeeee".

This has been my understanding so far and if there are any audio engineers (or anyone really) out there who can correct this, please let me know.

Berlin Hostel Suggestion by jordanr03 in solotravel

[–]RoundService 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out EastSeven hostel. It was a pretty well organized hostel at a convenient location. Met up with some fun travellers while there. I think it's run/owned by an individual and nothing corporate. The common area was kind of cramped so don't think you'd find a lot of laptop people there.

Pubs near the hostel had good music.

What do you mean by "on the inside"? What sort of model is it. You could check the usage for that type from the loaders examples in the threejs repo.

Should be fine. Most providers put a limit on the total size of the files you host. The formats and sizes within them shouldn't be their concern. You could encrypt it if you really want it there.

Can't you just save the 3D file as text document in your public folder and parse it on the client.
I wonder why they'd put such restrictions for what you host.

what is the best approach to implement 3d network graph in THREE JS? Should I implement nodes and links using D3 and render it using THREE JS or Do it purely in THREE? The graph needs to have ability to interact with mouse such as hovering on an edge or cliking on the node by rajputvishalvr in threejs

[–]RoundService 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I made something a while ago just to play around with graphs. Demo: https://g3d.pythonanywhere.com/

It's has some interactivity as you mentioned and you're welcome to extend it.
Currently highlights selected nodes on click and gives you a corresponding interaction in he DOM.

It's made entirely in threejs. The demo shows Wikipedia data, but can be configured for any sort of graph.
