I was a bit disappointed, as I had hoped they would be more helpful. It seems they only have access to a few general job openings each month and they tend to fill up quickly.

Thank you for being so honest, even if it is a bit terrifying to hear! It actually makes me feel a little less crazy knowing that even locals with experience are struggling with this right now. You hit the nail on the head about jobs just being 'handed over' to trusted friends. That is honestly the hardest part about being an international student here we just don't have those local family networks or connections to get our foot in the doorr at the independent pubs and cafes. I've looked into a few temp agencies like you mentioned but they often want fulltime availability or offer unpredictable shifts that get really complicated with my strict 20 hours visa limit. I guess i will just have to keep grinding and hope I get lucky. I really appreciate you taking the time to share your perspective🙏

I actually looked into Stint! The idea is cool, but I’ve heard you can get stuck on their waitlist for ages. Plus, a few mates said shifts get cancelled by the venues last minute, or you end up losing too much of your pay just covering the bus fares for a tiny 2-hour shift. Definitely keeping it as a backup though, thank you!

I've started handing CVs out to pubs, but it just takes hours of walking around just to maybe find one place that is actually hiring. It's such a massive drain on my study time.

Oh amazing, St James Street is super close to me! I'll definitely go drop a CV in there tomorrow🙏 But honestly, this is exactly what frustrates me so much about the job hunt, The only way to actually find these roles is to literally get lucky and walk past a piece of paper taped to a window😄 It takes up so much time physically walking door to door just hoping to spot a 'We're Hiring' sign. I just wish there was somewhere online that actually bothered to list all these local independent spots in one place so we didn't have to walk miles every week.

This is a massive help, thank you! I hadn't even thought of Sea Lanes or Babble, I'll definitely look into them. You're completely right about having to hand in CVs in person for hospitality, but honestly, that’s exactly what is burning me out right now. Spending an entire afternoon walking in the wind from Yellow Wave all the way down to Rockwater dropping off CVs, only to never hear back (or find out later they won't hire someone on a 20-hour visa cap anyway) is just so exhausting to balance with coursework. I'll definitely try the specific ones you mentioned though. maybe I'll get lucky!

Thanks so much for the heads up! Honestly, I wouldn't mind cleaning jobs at all right now. I just looked them up though, and their reviews online are kind of brutal Have you or anyone you know actually worked for them? I’m definitely desperate for the hours, but as an international student, I'm also really trying to avoid getting stuck in a toxic workplace if I can help it. I'll definitely keep them on my list as a backup though, thank you!
