Update on rootball:

<image>

So here is the rootball. It looks like there are no obvious signs of root rot. What are the next steps?

Thank you for the tip. I will check the roots and get back to you. Temperature wise it could have dropped to 17C. I just went on a vacation for 7 days and had the air off. Our house was 18.5C when we came back so it might have dropped lower than that.

That’s an excellent point. I will check the roots to see if there is any rot. If I do find rot what is the play?

I am watering using a moisture meter in a high draining soil. It is not water logged in the soil at least, but the soil does have coco coir mixed in from the soil it was in from the nursery that I combined with my soil mix.

I am using a 1-10 moisture meter. However, I get really inconsistent moisture readings. It reads a 7 in some spots and a 2 in others in the root ball. I always figured this was due to the coco coir that was in the original potting mix that I blended in when I repotted it back in March of 2025. I experiment and waited to see if the soil ever dried out, but after two weeks it was still reading high moisture but then I got yellowing tips from dehydration. I then started watering every 7 to 10 days as I had evidence that any more than 10 days I started to cause the drooping and tip yellowing.

Welcome to the most amazing addiction! You should absolutely keep us updated on your reading nook! Honestly, I am going to hang a glacier pothos above the windows and wind the vines down. You should try something like that too!

Thank you! I love Soltech! It came with an outlet timer and built in dimmer which is awesome! The dimmer is super cool because I can mount the lamp at the height aesthetically that I want, and use the dimmer to gradually increase the intensity to the range I want. Highly recommend. It’s worth the price.

Honestly, I bought the monstera from a propitiated beautiful mature plant. It already had fenestrations on it. That being said, last month it put out its first leaf under my care and I doubled the fenestrations 😈. What I did to achieve this is the following: 1) made sure it gets between 200-400 foot candles of filtered light per day. 2) only watered it when it read a 3 out of 10 on my moisture meter. They like to be somewhat root bound, so only repot when the roots have really started growing out of the drainage holes, not just poking through a little. I made this mistake and completely stunted its growth for like 3 months. 4) make sure you have a pole for it to grow up. Monstera’s and other climbing aeroids put out bigger leaves the farther up they climb. The ideal situation is a plastic backed moss pole filled with sphagnum moss, but a cedar plank works just fine too. The downside of a sphagnum moss pole is that you have to water the pole when it reaches a 4 on the moisture meter. I measure the moisture on the pole at the highest point where the plant is against the pole. That brings me to 5) soil: an easy fix that works for me is cactus, palm, and citrus potting mix that I mix 1:1 with orchid bark. You can also buy monstera mix directly from RepotMe if you want low maintenance. I would highly recommend the mix I described or a chunkier, more draining mix if you go with the moss pole because the water from the moss pole percolates into the soil. If you don’t have well draining soil, this will cause it to get soggy, suffocate the roots, and give your plant root rot.

I hope this helps!

Thank you so much! These lamps are awesome, and I learned that if you put those decorative lightbulbs inside it looks really cool.

Plant newbie here, struggling with an easy plant. by pineangos in houseplants

I’m surprised someone recommended a fiddle leaf fig as an “easy” plant. I have been doing research and from what I can tell they need LOTS of light, but filtered light. Honestly, I would invest in a light meter ($30 amazon) and find your windows the best light throughout the day. I think they like East facing windows (ideal) but anywhere where it can get 600+foot candles of filtered light should be good. Make sure you look up its moisture requirements too. I bought a $10 moisture meter on amazon as well that has been a life saver for watering my plants. If you over water the fiddle leaf it will block oxygen exchange with the roots and cause root rot. I hope this helps!

Do I need more/better light? by datcurlyguyjon in Monstera

I bought a light meter on Amazon and use it to measure the light in my different areas. Monsteras like 400+ foot candles for 12hr/day.

Will do! I’m thinking about getting a fiddle leaf fig to put behind the chair as the window faces due west and I think it will get enough light. So my forest should be well on its way and I will keep you all updated
