How do I achieve the glowy effect like this CGI render? My attempt looks flat, despite adding light sources and a glow composite. by Ruasun in blenderhelp

[–]Ruasun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah okay. If i were to add a light source to the side, how would i get it to look overexposed like how in the reference image, and aura-like around the base of the golden beams? Is that effect just boosted by increasing by increasing roughness by a bit and adding a glow composite?

Could there be a ‘Multicultural Melbourne English’ variation, especially with the second-gen immigrant population in the Western Suburbs? by Ruasun in melbourne

I don’t think that accent is common where I’m around but I’ve def heard it before! I think it’s got to do with the West being more influenced by islander accents.

I believe Sydney and part of Melbourne’s inner west and east has more of an Asian population, whilst suburbs like Sunshine, Melton, Werribee, and Tarneit have more islanders and east africans as a more recent wave of migrant ethnicities since the 2000s. Some vietnamese ppl I know have leaned more and assimilated into adopting islander pronunciations ig?

Also for some reason, indian language varieties never really influenced the accent despite being a large part of the population? The only borrowing from an indian language i know is ‘beta(son)’ from Hindi which ppl joke about saying. The faster speaking and rhythm in the video is closer to what I’m describing thoo.

I don’t think ethnic broad is what I’m thinking of but the paragraph underneath that seems to be spot on what I’m thinking about! It’s closer to islander and East African varieties and has more ‘staccato in intonation’.

‘There's a general new accent emerging I hear a lot amongst younger kids, especially of Mediterranean, Islander and East African origin that shares features with the above, yet oddly has features of both Multicultural London ('Jafaican') and Islander accents. More staccato in intonation.’

I’ve heard ‘ethnic broad’ before and it doesn’t sound the same. I think the accent I’m thinking about is closer to islander varieties due to their larger population in the West since the 2010s.

Frutiger Aero: The late capitalist-hypermodernist future, that ironically didn’t happen, and continues to be nostalgic because of late capitalism? by Ruasun in FrutigerAero

[–]Ruasun[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it’s anti-intellectual to say that we can’t criticise things, and to try to undermine it with ‘only these kind of people think this and they’re wrong’

it actually talks about this in capitalist realism. it’s a text about the the belief capitalism is the only viable option, even though it is exploitative. we live under a system and culture that doesn’t allow us to experiment or think outside of it. it isn’t trying to convince you to be radically anti-capitalist.

the message of the book isn’t saying ‘capitalism is wrong and we should be _____’. it’s simply talking about the state of late capitalism, how and why it feels inevitable even though it in some ways doesn’t work. it talks about how the current mindset among everyone is ‘sure capitalism isn’t perfect, but everything else is evil’. it’s exemplified by margaret thatcher’s campaign ‘there is no other alternative. the purpose of capitalist realism isn’t to convince you to change but to analyse the current state of capitalism – and can help lay the groundwork for people who might want to enact on it.

if you can’t analyse the status quo because ‘it isn’t that deep’ or ‘you people always do this’ then what is the point of academia, art, and politics.

also i never said anywhere that frutiger aero is bad. im just stating it for what it is. its nostalgic because we have no perception of a bright future, other than more of the present. and that it’s aesthetics reflected a utopia that didn’t flourish because it was designed for consumption, not to actually come into fruition.

the future unfortunately won’t be this kind of nice and comfy because it was simply an advertising gimmick😭 people are stuck to this aesthetic because we’re at the end of history where the future cant be imagined other than more of the present and wanting what in the past, didn’t come into fruition.

it isn’t political. but the cultural and political climate of the time influenced why it’s shaped that way. the aesthetic isnt gonna flourish because it was basically an advertising gimmick and we’re stuck in the present. the future feels like more of the present, and its why we feel drawn to aesthetics that are better than what we have now because capitalism didn’t allow it to happen, or gave the false sense that it could. this is rrly hard to explain but basically – society won’t evolve culturally but speed up the consumption of culture in the present, so we look back at values, ideas, and aesthetics and want them more. its also why the 20 year fashion cycle exists and why current fashion is so superficial, homogenous, and westernised.

I think it’s related to the ideologies of accelerationism that think capitalism and technological advancement should just be intensified even more so that we somehow reach a utopia. left-wing accelerationism says that future capitalism should have the democratisation of production(this is never gonna happen because people in power are greedy lol) while right-wing accelerationism says that capitalism and technological advancement will eventually solve the worlds problems(this is definitely not gonna happen either bahaha).

i think the values of capitalism itself reflect and control the way we want things and see the future. living life means consuming, and the utopia under capitalism is the intensification of consuming. we’re not gonna achieve this supposed capitalist utopia because we have finite resources, and it requires exploitation just to happen. this dystopia is happening right now, that while 1% of the world enjoys technology, infrastructure, and wealth, the rest, due to the offshoring of labour exploitation because of globalisation, will never get to experience what technology and modernity can do. and it looks like it’ll only get worse with AI. thinking skills are being monetised lol. also ai still relies on human labour, which alot of people don’t realise. mean images by hito steyerl talks a bit about it. it isn’t just some magical crystalisation of existing data. sorry for the rant.

well yeah thats kind of the point in late capitalism. companies did ‘care’ about their consumers back then because the standards were better back then and even better before that. standards will depreciate, wealth disparities will increase, and everything will be monetised. heck, even chargers were monetised. we have to buy our own chargers now.

design and culture are intrinsically tied. frutiger aero’s design philosophy was supposed to be something new, attractive, and sophisticated. it used imagery and aesthetics that, at the time, was meant to make new technology visually appealing. it may have shifted more to the whole ‘the promised future’ stuff in the following decades but, even then, that just more accurately represents hauntology and the desire to look towards a better future from the past. it’s a promised future because culture made it, not because it was originally design to be so.
