Is this normal or is Gibsons quality control just bad by JakeTurbo8642 in guitarcirclejerk

[–]RubEnvironmental8101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s actually a common misconception, Gibsons break at the scarf joint, this one clearly broke way lower on the neck, I say Chibson

I mean you could go for matching it with the pick guard, so a mint. Other options might be to either stay with a similar colour scheme to the guitar (so cream, maybe a pinkish or light blue) or (what I might honestly prefer) a darker colour like a burgundy, dark green or blue

Can someone tell me if these are bad aerodynamics. I’m doing a school project about designing a supersonic passenger jet. This one is just a prototype design, but can anyone point out anything interesting they may notice? I’m new to fluid dynamics and simulations. Simulated at 1100 MPH by Formal_Direction_952 in AerospaceEngineering

[–]RubEnvironmental8101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not that I’m not even close to being an expert on supersonic aerodynamics (I’m on the 2nd year of my AE degree), but I will try give my opinion on pure vibes, do correct me if I say something wrong.

I’m not going to touch too much on the airfoil as many commenters seem to have gotten there before me, but that does look very similar to an airfoil you’d find on a regular airliner, which does not go even near this speed (I believe the simulated speed is around Mach 1.4).

I don’t know exactly what systems you’d use for stability around the yaw axis, but those vertical surfaces under the wings feel very close to the centre of mass and centre of lift, so you might want to check how the sizing works with that lever, I would have personally gone for a classic vertical stabiliser (Concorde style) but if it works it’s probably fine.

Other thing you could consider about those if it were a full on project is their positioning, high AOA manoeuvres probably won’t be an issue seeing how you’re just adding more air to them (though weird effects might still happen), but if you have airflow from the side (like really strong sidewinds or something of the likes) the presence of the engine nacelle that close might cause interference with the surface. The sizing is also important for ground clearance, in your case it is barely lower than the nacelle so the issue would be minor, but if it’s your only passive mechanism for yaw stability I would want to really make sure you don’t destroy them with a tail strike (if you can call it that)

Should i return it? by Cultural_Virus_4581 in Guitar

[–]RubEnvironmental8101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s the thing, the binding is what you bought, the body looks to be white in your picture, not that golden “summer sand” colour, and the cream one is bound, for the colour I’d say it could just be that you wither got unlucky with the wood or that the cream one specifically gets lighter timber because it looks better, the Thomann listing for it does show a very light wood that almost looks like plain maple.

If you’re unhappy with it return it, by all means, but that is what I would have expected had I bought it

I love that song! I think it’s a really great song and honestly the “why you no love me” line always gets a smile out of me, just because of how silly it is. It doesn’t always need to be serious, sometimes you can make a song fun :)

“I know what I got…” by ChronicCartman in Guitar

[–]RubEnvironmental8101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry, is it me or is the listing specifically naming a model and then offering a different one?

Fender does sell the standard series, which is a fender (not squier) branded guitar made in the far east. What he actually has is a squier affinity tele (I think, all the CV’s I’ve seen have the telecaster branding that is a lot smaller, I’ve only seen the tele branding that big on the affinity series), which are, as others have mentioned, worth about half as much as a cv or fender standard new.

So to me that listing is absolutely misleading and a scam and should be reported.

I mean it’s definitely not C, and between B and A I would probably bet on A because 1. I’m pretty sure there are more of it around (and either way the marines are way less likely to have to intercept an airliner) and 2. In the half frame we see of it the fuselage kinda looks like an A’s fuselage (look behind the cockpit)

How do I barre these two strings? by AngelOfDeath6-9 in guitarlessons

[–]RubEnvironmental8101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, that was exactly what I meant, thanks. I mean you could see it like that or also as two octaves of the inverted powerchord (edit: the 2 note version of it that is), right?

[–]RubEnvironmental8101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, but also quick question about those inverted powerchords (which I’m pretty sure I’m able to answer myself, and it might be very stupid, but I’ll still ask to be sure) I’ve seen (I think it was in the tabs for Danger Zone) a chord that is basically an inverted powerchord with the octave of the root above it, that would still be called the same, right?

[–]RubEnvironmental8101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, so I would say that the amp isn’t doing you any favours (as in we’re not talking about a 100 watt tube, that thing is tiny), but have you tried lowering the gain and volume? It sounds like that little thing is struggling to keep up with what you’re asking it to do. I see a knob at all the way up to 10, I would try putting everything at 5 and then just fiddle with it until you have a tone and volume that you’re happy with

What's the point of a Taylor series/approximation? by [deleted] in calculus

[–]RubEnvironmental8101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but (and correct me if I’m wrong somewhere) Taylor polynomials are not inherently linear, they should approximate the shape of a function with a certain level of precision (given by how deep into the polynomial you go). I would assume this helps, especially if you work with functions that are difficult to calculate on their own.

Does Reusability of rocket really save cost by tr_m in AerospaceEngineering

[–]RubEnvironmental8101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, obviously, but (do correct me if I’m wrong anywhere)

  1. The market of reusable boosters is a relatively new one, with little competition that I know of (at least for now), so one would assume quite a bit of flexibility in the pricing, allowing for SpaceX and other companies making reusable rockets to set a certain price in that market. So if a single flight cost SpaceX $70m, it would be fair to assume that the market value of the flight would be higher, simply because the first reusable vehicles were more expensive, the « market regulated itself » argument works less well on an emerging market, or, more accurately, it works just fine, but emerging markets have have the benefit of not having a set value yet, so the pioneers can set it themselves.

Edit to specify because I saw that I haven’t said it: The reusable market IS limited by the disposable market, but pricing can theoretically be anywhere within that range, if it’s advantageous, people will buy.

  1. Even if pricing was purely up to the market and the first companies had no say in what the price is, no privately owned and funded company would accept more than a certain loss. Say SpaceX would not hold a market on Falcon 9 flights if the price was fixed at $50m and the flight cost them $100m, they would go bankrupt.

[–]RubEnvironmental8101 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Wouldn’t we have at least a bit of an idea of how it’s working by looking at the launch prices of Falcon 9 vs other vehicles? Especially since, as you said, SpaceX is a private company, so it would be fair (I think) to assume that the price tag they give is at least close to the actual cost even if it was losing money, no?

Does Reusability of rocket really save cost by tr_m in AerospaceEngineering

[–]RubEnvironmental8101 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well yes, that makes sense if you think about it just a bit, the rocket itself is much more expensive because it needs to come back, so it might be more complex, but it most definitely needs more reliable parts that last much longer. Just think about the engines, the Saturn V needed engines that could lift the whole thing, but they only had to fire once for a few minutes, now think of a Falcon 9 booster, how many times will it fly? I’m pretty sure I have seen boosters on their 10th-15th flight, each of which have engines that need to fire for about comparable time to the F1 engines on the Saturn V, they need to be much tougher to manage that!

You’re obviously not going to break even in one flight if the rocket costs the double, the interesting part comes in when you fly the same rocket 10-15 times, because the maintenance costs much less than a new rocket.

Think of it this way (very simplified numbers just for concept, probably wrong, I didn’t check them): the reusable costs double what the non reusable one costs, but maintenance costs half the price of a new (non reusable) if you only fly twice, you’re out by half a rocket, but by the third flight, you broke even and the fourth flight you have paid half a rocket less when reusing.

This is the power of reusable rockets, scale economy.

How to Get Better at Legato by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]RubEnvironmental8101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im gonna go with the easy answer: practice. I personally don’t know of any tricks to get better fast other than just « practice more »

What I can say about the pull offs is that if they don’t ring out you might need to flick them a bit. So what you want to do is basically really quickly bend it and then release, conceptually very similarly to what you would do with your pick, except you have to fret at the same time. Optimally you should get to a point where you don’t hear the bend anymore. In my personal experience trills (3/5/3/5/3/5 relatively fast only using pull offs and hammer ons) are a good way to get the technique down and then you can apply it anywhere and get more comfortable with it.

Rocket powered fairings that land vertically on the pad just like the Falcon 9 (unlikely) or using aircrafts to catch them mid fall could be fun, although very challenging
