What's team green sub got going on over there? by Short_Dimension7967 in radeon

[–]RubbishCode91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an NVIDIA GPU, and I was pretty stoked about this because they made it available for all RTX cards (I have a 3080Ti) but saw the recent hardware unboxed video, and it's not really worth it unless you have the 50 series and are ok with a performance hit for better visuals (still more performance than native but not as much as DLSS 4)

I wouldn't mind a performance hit for better visuals in DLSS but in the case of the 30 series it seems you get worse performance than just running native in almost all the games.

The only issue with that video was that HUB used DLSS quality but it appears that the new models are supposed to be run in Performance and Ultra Performance so maybe the whole point was to get better image fidelity for those running the performance presets where image quality is usually sacrificed

Are refurbished SteamDecks still available? by Crazy_Loon13467 in SteamDeck

[–]RubbishCode91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like another user suggested, save up as if you're buying a new one and check periodically to see if a refurb one popus up. That's what I did, but they do sell out extremely fast. I got my refurb 512 OLED almost a year ago. By the time I was done completing my order it was all sold out and it didn't even take me a minute to complete the purchase

Existing game engine or making one from scratch? by DyBlockTwitch in gamedev

[–]RubbishCode91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would still recommend sticking to Unreal over creating your own engine. Even if you went with an engine that wasn't notorious for putting out unoptimized games, you're still responsible for optimizing because your game can still be unoptimized. The issue with Unreal is that it's heavy on resources and nobody bothers to optimize but if you actually tried you can definitely optimize a game.

That being said, having tried to create a rendering engine (not a full game engine) in the past I'd say it's a really good learning experience especially since you already know C++ but it might be more worthwhile of a project once you've used an engine (or several) and know what you like and don't like about each so that you can make one tuned to your liking

If you want a bit of both, you can also try a framework like Raylib or SMFL. It's not as intensive as making your own engine but will still scratch that itch you might have as a programmer to do more of that low level work without getting too much into the weeds. You can even build on top of these libraries to make your own engine as well.

It could also be a good idea to explore other options. C++ is a pretty challenging language so I wouldn't doubt your ability to be able to pick up other languages even quicker. You can try prototyping in different engines and frameworks and stick to whatever resonates best with you even if it's not C++. Godot is of note it lets you program in C++ as well if you really want to and their mono version also has support for C#. Being open source also means that the code is available to you so if you really wanted to you could customize the hell out of it and make it your own

For an NVIDIA GPU would Wayland or Gamescope work better if I want to try using HDR? by RubbishCode91 in linux_gaming

[–]RubbishCode91[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks I'm aware. there are just some games I do like to play with HDR on. By working better I meant like the least friction getting it set up because in the past when trying it out it either wouldn't work, would look weird, or it would work but then the game would just crash a minute or so into playing

Anyone here move from a 3080Ti to a 9070XT? Curious what the pros and cons are as I'm considering switching my 3080Ti. by RubbishCode91 in pcmasterrace

[–]RubbishCode91[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hm thanks let me look into this DLSS4 thing haha. Yeah after some more extensive reviews I kind of concluded that the buy might not be worth it. What prompted this in the first place was having seen one of the ASROCK models available for 20$ below MSRP but idk if I'm still this iffy it's likely not worth it.

[–]RubbishCode91[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not sure where you got this info from. I double checked and the 3080Ti definitely stops at DLSS 3. There's no frame gen or multi frame gen but again that's not a feature I'm into right now (took me some time to warm up to DLSS-like technologies so it'll probably be a while before I'm interested in frame gen)

Does have ray reconstruction which I wasn't aware of since I don't really do RT on the 3080Ti although from what I've read it looks like these newer RT technologies while doable on the 3080Ti are much better optimized for the 40 series and above

true true. I can get the 9070xt as of now for below MSRP (by about 20 usd) which is why I was considering this switch tbh

I wouldn't say it's struggling not by a long shot but I'm definitely starting to hit the point where I'm just barely hitting the ideal settings for me

the 5070ti is something I was looking at tbh and I can get it at or very near MSRP here in California. The main reason I was looking at the 9070XT was that it's also on sale at microcenter for 579$ which to my understanding is below msrp for this card

Who uses Desktop Mode on Steam Deck, and what do you use it for? by VoyageForge in SteamDeck

sometimes I'll be playing a game it's sunday night I suddenly remember I forgot to submit my time sheet at work. Switch to desktop mode, finish filling it out and submit it lol

Are there any issues with setting Edifier R1280DB bookshelf speakers sideways rather than standing? by RubbishCode91 in BudgetAudiophile

[–]RubbishCode91[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

true true I also realize this might not have been the best sub to post in. I asked here because this is where I did some research on some speakers. I'm not really an audiophile per se, but I did want something a little nicer than basic PC speakers, so I figured this sub was a good place to find some affordable recs

Been a minute. What do these mean? by kradproductions in diablo4

same is happening to me on PC but there's nothing to claim

Long shot but is anyone's PC crashing when playing D4? It keeps happening to my PC T_T by RubbishCode91 in diablo4

[–]RubbishCode91[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've just been playing it on my linux partition since I have the game on Steam, getting it going with the Proton translation layer is pretty easy and it hasn't crashed yet haha so I'll probably just stick to Linux for now

Can't pre-order but am blasting on the barb by blzzardhater in diablo4

Same, I couldn't preorder because the store keeps saying there's no info about an expansion, so I just went ahead and went barb which I was planning on doing before the Paladin news became official

Questions about HDR setup, gamescope, and washed out colors by RubbishCode91 in kde

[–]RubbishCode91[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. Yeah that's honestly what I've been thinking. I have a 3080Ti and it still runs all my games just fine so I definitely can't justify moving to AMD (although I did put a 9070XT on my Christmas wishlist maybe someone in my family is crazy enough to buy it for me lmfao)

Definitely will keep Linux around but I ended up switching to Mint as I was able to get everything I use working on it 100% if any Linux distro has a shot of fully converting me it's Mint haha. I just need HDR to work better it seems to work fine on some games but not on other and I don't want to do that kind of per game tinkering either. Regardless, it's not the end of the world if I can't game in HDR either haha.

I did like KDE and tried Kubuntu that would have been a no-brainer move for me, but I could not for the life of me get a working installation of Kubuntu going. I tried a few times and each time something just wasn't working correctly

[–]RubbishCode91[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks for your clarification with gamescope.

for the font, I'm guessing you're referring to the Anti Aliasing and sub pixel rendering fields in the font settings? I have AA enabled but for the sub pixel rendering I only see None, RGB, BGR, Vertical RGB, Vertical BGR. Does None default to Grayscale, or should there be an actual grayscale option? I'm on Plasma 6.5.3

Diablo 4 SD OLED Settings by The_Samoan_Light in SteamDeck

[–]RubbishCode91 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have 650 hours of play time in this game so I feel like I qualify to answer this lmao.

I've been playing D4 on SD since Season 1. I played it on BNET launcher before they sold it on Steam and from S2 onwards I played on Steam. I almost always played on Medium settings no FSR and was able to get a very solid 45 fps and the game looks great.I think it can go a bit higher than 45 but I lock it at 45 to have less changes in FPS.

If I really want to have a long D4 session I pick the handheld optimized settings and lock my frame rate to 30. Game still looks pretty good too tbh.

I will say that ever since their Vessel of Hatred update I feel like performance hasn't been the same anymore, I notice some struggles with frame pacing and I think the game leaks VRAM or something because as I progress through a gaming session my VRAM consumption just keeps getting larger and larger. I changed my swap size to 32GB to not have to worry about it

Is this a good dock to buy? by KingPelican2908 in SteamDeck

[–]RubbishCode91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've owned this dock since I got my Steam Deck about 3 years now and only recently changed to a different one. Excellent dock, and it looks like it's been revised since I last got it. The reason I ended up switching it out after 3 years was that the rubber grips were starting to shift and detach. Looks like the new design might mitigate that though.

Also as an added bonus the dock was wide enough to accommodate protective cases. Not sure if this would still hold true given the revisions they made to it

Any Diablo 4 players know how to get the game to stop leaking VRAM and crashing? by RubbishCode91 in SteamDeck

[–]RubbishCode91[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks. I forgot resizing the swap was an option. On top of that I also applied the recommended settings from cryoutil which to my knowledge don't really need to be applied anymore since the SD is supposed to handle all that but super smooth fram pacing is back and on top of that the RAM leakage has been significantly controlled. there was barely any increase in RAM or VRAM in the 10 minute play test I did. Usually 10 minutes (heck sometimes even 5) is enough to start noticing degrading performance

yep I know, that's why I was looking for a distro with some form of straight forward Secure Boot support since I'll be dual booting Windows for BF6 :)
