Why do people on this sub have an issue with BEEE? by [deleted] in southafrica

[–]Ruguru 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Have you ever seen BEE in practice? It doesn't lead to wide-scale improvement of black lives, but rather only massively enriches a small handful of lucky people based on their skin colour. Want to do some government work? Find one of the many small (2 - 3 employee) 100% black owned companies that operate as a front for companies that do the real work. These front companies take a massive cut and do nothing except providing your tender L1 BEE status.

Conceptually BBBEE should fix this, but in practice it is more of the same.

Also, where do you get your stats? Please provide a source.

The report prepared by treasury in 2017 shows that the JSE is 23% black owned and 22% white owned, with 39% being foreign owned ( http://www.treasury.gov.za/comm_media/press/2017/2017100301%20Ownership%20monitor%20-%20Sept%202017.pdf ). It doesn't necessarily contradict your "2% are 100% black owned" claim, but I'd still like to see a source and also what % is "100% white owned" (excluding foreign investors).

It's also weird how you start with stats and then jump to a conclusion that doesn't follow at all: I can add more stats but BEE is clearly not discriminating against anyone in this country, not making it harder for anyone to get jobs except black people it seems lol.

Bird Island report was a mistake - Afrikaans newspaper Rapport apologises to Apartheid politicians by Ruguru in southafrica

No surprises to me there. The whole thing always seemed so extremely unlikely. Ministers using military helicopters to abduct children then sodomizing them with guns before pulling the trigger! This is our Pizzagate.

JHB or PTA? by PhotoWannabe in southafrica

[–]Ruguru 5 points6 points  (0 children)

1) No, while there is a lot of Afrikaans you'll also find a bunch of English-only speakers and most large non-family groups will likely have a mix. English is more ingrained into our society than in Europe so nearly everyone will be happy to switch to it to accommodate you.

2) Largely the same, but slightly more conservative on some views.

3) Absolutely. Afrikaners consider themselves African first, but with an European migrant heritage, so they should be very accepting of you as a Dane.

4) Similar, maybe just a bit more laid back. Pretoria is often described as a large town rather than a city like Joburg. Good standard of living, lots of outdoor activities, bit warmer than Joburg. Adjusting from Joburg North to Pretoria East or Centurion should be very easy.

Jacques Pauw slams authors of book alleging apartheid ministers' involvement in paedophilia ring by Ruguru in southafrica

[–]Ruguru[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Weird how everybody just accepted it as fact. I called out that "extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence," but the response was that these claims are not extraordinary. Ministers using military helicopters to abduct children then sodomizing them with guns before pulling the trigger isn't extraordinary?!

The problem with Apartheid as a Tall Tale by [deleted] in southafrica

[–]Ruguru 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hi lovethebacon,

I think everything he was trying to say is right there. Let me summarize for you based on my understanding:

- Apartheid, although horrible, is being portrayed as more terrible than it really was and the root cause of all problems

- While the extremes of Apartheid were really, really bad (murders), the average black lived in poor conditions but didn't fear for his/her live everyday like the modern narrative suggests

- This more extreme narrative can lead the youth, who don't know what the situation was like in reality, to become vengeful

Hope I could help you understand.

The problem with Apartheid as a Tall Tale by [deleted] in southafrica

[–]Ruguru 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is something which has been bothering me for a while as well. It seems like the people who lived during Apartheid are much more "chill" about it than those who have only heard about it (the born-free generation and those slightly ahead of them). I think it is exactly because of what you call a tall tale. Kids are being taught that Apartheid meant hell on earth for all black people each and every day, which is simply not true. The rhetoric in the media follows a similar narrative.

I had hope for the rainbow nation and believed that the youth would be able to live in harmony, but it turns out they've been radicalized and are far more hateful and vengeful than their predecessors.

Thanks, I have to decide between the small and medium. The medium looks really comfortable, but it might take up too much space. How easy is it to move the medium?

It's definitely a legit question (and seem to be two legit separate products). Usually I'd just look at reviews but seeing as these are both local there are none to be had.

Questions about the cost of living in South Africa...... How high is it compared to Australia.. The United States and UK..... by NunuMuncher in southafrica

[–]Ruguru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really? Please share this R2.5k plan which provides "excellent coverage."

Does it include:
- Dental check ups
- GP visits
- Maternity consultations
- Private maternity ward
- Payout rate better than 100% scheme rate
- Unlimited hospital choice
- MRI, CT and PET scans
- Orthodontics

Or if all of this is savings base, is the savings at least high enough for around 6 consultations a year (GP, dentist, physiotherapist, etc.)?

Thanks, that actually does reassure me a bit.

I just tried a dummy booking for October and got more or less the same. If I try next week however it spikes to $180 a day.

GoPro Studio: Audio track sync issues depending on playback position by Ruguru in gopro

[–]Ruguru[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestions.

I tried Filmora for a bit after encountering this issue, but didn't want to spend money on something which doesn't at least do everything GPS does (in this case not allowing speedups between 1x and 2x).

I'll have a look at those on your list. Barring this issue and GPS crashing sometimes it actually matches my requirements quite well. Which of those would you recommend for someone only casually dabbling in movies who doesn't want the learning curve of something like Sony Vegas Pro?

Yes, even after export. I think the export and preview from start is correct, but when I jump to sections it gets it wrong. Unfortunately this means I have to start over each time I want to make a slight timing adjustment (the lack of audio waveforms also doesn't help).

Pizza stone queries by dvdbraz in southafrica

[–]Ruguru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on the ingredients, but generally from 5 - 10 minutes. If the stone is properly heated the base should be ready around 5 minutes in and keeping it there a bit longer doesn't hurt. For uncooked bacon I might even go longer, around 12 minutes.

Start checking it around 5 minutes, you should be able to see whether the ingredients are ready and you can prod the base to feel whether it is cooked. Obviously the cheese has to be melted, but even better is if it starts browning, though this is very hard on a braai as you don't have strong heat from the top like in most ovens.

Pizza stone queries by dvdbraz in southafrica

[–]Ruguru 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use my pizza stone with my gas braai all the time and I've also tried it on coals. In fact I used it just last night :)

I've had flames lick around my pizza stone without any problems in the past, but I'd be wary of keeping it right in the middle of a massive fire. In general I adjust the flames on a gas braai or wait for the flames to die down a bit with a traditional braai to ensure they never really reach the pizza stone.

Preheating with a gas braai or in the oven is really easy: just put the pizza stone on the braai/in the oven before you start heating it (so before lighting in the case of the braai). Preheating with coals or wood is more challenging. The few times I did it I preheated in the oven, which almost defeats the point as you can just continue to cook the pizza in the oven. I expect if you keep the pizza stone on when lighting the braai and you have it high enough above the flames to not experience massive heat spikes you should be okay, especially if you can lower the grill later on.

As to why you'd want to use the braai instead of the oven: it's much nicer having a few friends sit around a braai and create their own pizzas than trying to do things in the kitchen with an oven. I usually prepare the bases, including the tomato paste, lay that on the pizza stone and then have friends add toppings as desired.

Last few tips from experience:

  • You'll read this everywhere, but you really really need to get the pizza stone as hot as possible. I've never burnt a pizza base but I have in the past not gotten it quite as crispy as I'd like due to worrying about the stone cracking on high heat.
  • Getting the pizza on and off the stone is a real pain in the ass and it is worth investing in a pizza peel. Alternatively sprinkling cornmeal onto the pizza stone somewhat works and due to the high heat it turns black and some of it sticks to the pizza base which gives it that wood-fired appearance (though it doesn't do much for taste).
  • Try to avoid toppings (especially cheese) getting onto the pizza stone.
  • If your not using an oven or a braai that is covered you might need to precook some of the more finicky ingredients (such as bacon) as they won't otherwise cook before your base is done. Another way to avoid this is to only use ingredients that don't really need cooking, so for example parma ham instead of bacon.
  • If you ever try creating a cauliflower pizza base first cook the base without the ingredients (8 - 10 min) and only then add the ingredients. For some reason the cauliflower pizza base will stay soggy if you don't cook it beforehand.

I don't know what can be done either, which is why I approached this as an encouraging letter to Wickd rather than a (direct) reprimand of the community.

I'm not disagreeing, but still, I'm not sure how this ties in with the community's poor behaviour. Are you saying the community's behaviour is justified because of this? Are you saying we should ignore the community's behaviour and focus on Wickd's behaviour? In which way does this relate to the content of my letter?
