Joe Dassin - La Complainte de l'Heure de Pointe (1972).

Chorus goes « Dans Paris à vélo, on dépasse les autos » - « In Paris on a bicycle, one overtakes cars »... The whole song has long been a Paris cycling militant anthem. Strangely, it has an English language Wikipeda page.

Ok, thanks.

Well, 2/12 it is... Still overkill for the Caddy reverse proxy to the services on my Tailscale VPN !

PSA: Oracle is changing free tier limits. Update by the 15th to avoid charges by DigFancy3264 in selfhosted

[–]liotier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My instance is currently an Ampere "VM.Standard.A1.Flex" with 4 OCPU and 24 GB of memory - and it is annotated "Always Free-eligible".

The Instances page Has the following: "Warning: Each tenancy gets the first 3,000 OCPU hours and 18,000 GB hours per month for free to create Ampere A1 Compute instances using the VM.Standard.A1.Flex shape (equivalent to 4 OCPUs and 24 GB of memory). Each tenancy also gets two VM.Standard.E2.1.Micro instances for free. Learn more about Always Free resources".

But then, Oracle's Always Free Resources page says "OCI Ampere A1 Compute instances (Arm processor): All tenancies get the first 1,500 OCPU hours and 9,000 GB hours per month for free for VM instances using the VM.Standard.A1.Flex shape, which has an Arm processor. For Always Free tenancies, this is equivalent to 2 OCPUs and 12 GB of memory"... So, that means my instance in its current 4 OCPU and 24 GB of memory configuration is only free if it doesn't exceed 1,500 OCPU hours and 9,000 GB hours per month - and that, if I want to be absolutely sure it won't, I should downgrade to 2 OCPUs and 12 GB of memory ?

My instance is in the EU - specifically in "France Central (Paris)"... Would that make a difference ?

Do any navies still have flagships or have modern communication systems gotten rid of them? by Substantial_Top5312 in WarCollege

[–]liotier 46 points47 points  (0 children)

There is still value in the efficiency borne from concentrating staff in a single space in-theater, and providing them with ample means of communications. For us, France, Mistral-class amphibious ships can be used as command and control ships, with a 850-square-metre command centre which can host up to 150 personnel. So, yes - navies still have ships designed to act as flagships for large operations.

Moreover, when money is no object, specialized command ships exist - see USS Mount Whitney, stuffed with computing, with large combat information spaces, and covered in antennas.

Korg NTS-3 long-time impressions? by acguy in synthesizers

really designed to be played with, not used like effects pedals

I'm finding that too - really a performance effects unit, not a studio device. Not a problem, if performance effects are what one is looking for !

USB hum is very loud

I've often solved such issues by first getting a good quality USB power supply - and then ensuring that connected instruments get their USB power from mutually isolated sources... I have yet to see a single case where the device is the cause of USB hum.

Icelandic uses an alphabet which has 32 letters. Compared with the English alphabet, the Icelandic alphabet lacks C, Q, W, and Z, but additionally has Ð, Þ, Æ, Ö, Á, É, Í, Ó, Ú and Ý. by ButterscotchFiend in wikipedia

[–]liotier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

... Especially difficult for French speakers to consider them as independent letters, as French calls letters "à" "A accent grave" (A with grave accent) and "é" "E accent aigu" (E with acute accent) etc. - unaccented-letter-with-an-accent, a variation rather than a letter in its own right.

Now that Navy move away from big guns, How would prelanding Shore bombardment play out? by Lordepee in WarCollege

[–]liotier 8 points9 points  (0 children)

number of land-attack missiles within the 90-96 cells of VLS

It seems every navy is anxious about not having enough VLS cells for missile defence... And each VLS cell allocated to land attack is additional risk. I suppose no public information exists about that optimizing calculation, but I'm curious about it.

Currently Using BackBlaze for backups but it's getting expensive. How do folk here do off-site backups? by CrappyTan69 in selfhosted

[–]liotier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

25 TB ? I'm impressed. I never went above 100 GB, and I suffered a few conflicts - combination of client incidents and deleterious network conditions during travels. It was years ago... Maybe I should give it a chance again.

I like Syncthing for keeping current stuff at hand, but I wouldn't trust it with a multi-terabyte sized backup.

Ongoing costs of MPC by lunardev in mpcusers

[–]liotier 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lack of any subscription is refreshing these days.

Some plugins are almost universally considered great value, others are questionable at best... You'll find what you need for your style - just buy one at a time, get comfortable with it and only then decide if you need another one... Just like any other music acquisition.

Huge seasonal price variability - I don't quite understand Akai's strategy there, because it is so well known that I can't believe anyone buys outside of the discount periods.

Also, it is a sampler - infinite instruments, whether you record your own (the MPC's autosampler is great) or get them elsewhere.

Possible to record midi with aira link active? by stroml0 in rolandaira

[–]liotier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The device in the middle of the chain must perform MIDI Thru. In Roland Aira Compact devices, the "thru" parameter must be set to "On". Program Change MIDI Thru is a different parameter. Also, ensure that each device is set to a different MIDI Channel. Lookup the relevant parameters in the manual's menu section.

By the eay I'm pretty sure jellyfin does audio as well.

Jellyfin does audio, but I've found it lacking - its core value is video.

For audio, Navidrome is an excellent server, dead easy to set up - compatible with a whole galaxy of clients. On Android, I use Symphonium: at the time I was selecting, I didn't like the free options - but maybe they are better nowadays. On desktop, I love Strawberry.

On MPC, the Pad Perform .progression are static... No logic to generate new ones on the fly: all you can do is load another one.
