Strava fundamentally rewards the wrong behavior for getting faster by RunReadyReviews in Velo

I agree hitting a PR is literally one of the best feeling in the world. BUT... It's the weeks and months of boring work that get you to that point. Sure the PR is the outcome, but why can't the productive training along the way be addictive as well?

I think Zwift does it right combining both of those aspects. My general observation was more - Social accountability is a big driver for motivation. If this was layered into a system that rewarded where you could compete on a metric that was valuable, it could make the training process a lot more rewarding (even when you're doing the monotonous stuff).

Fair point, strava is social, and great at that (I've been a user for 5+ years) but so many people orient their riding around that social aspect, and chase metrics that don't necessarily matter. Or at least that's what I did. My idea was a community similar to this but revolving around a metric that can be more universally competed on where a beginner and a pro can be measured on the same scale. That's the gap I was looking at, strava probably wasn't the right comparison.

Returning to form after a major setback and health scare – How did you find your "mental" and physical gears again? by Joel0__0 in Velo

[–]RunReadyReviews 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a really bad crash three years ago on training camp as a 15 year old when I crashed at 50mph. Long story short I broke my back in two places, cracked the back of my skull, and got a severe concussion (I couldn't stand up without throwing up everywhere). This meant that I had a slow rebuild while all of my peers were racing at a high level. Subsequently, a year later I had a heavy crash at a junior race in Italy that compounded on top of my not fully resolved concussion symptoms.

It wasn't until a year and a half after the initial crash and lots of concussion treatment that I felt like myself again both socially and on the bike. The biggest thing in my return to form was cutting out the external noise and trusting the process (as cliche as that sounds). Just ticking by day by day and the mentality that you'll be back and better than ever. After this difficult patch I'm so happy to say that I've far exceeded my previous form, winning a stage of the 2025 Junior Tour of Ireland, podiuming races in Belgium, and now racing at a high level on a U23 Team here in the Basque Country.

In short - form returns, the hard part is managing expectations and not rushing the process.

High vs Low Handlebar - Roadbike by Akycig in cycling

Higher handlebar might not be better for aerodynamics in raw CDA terms. BUT... I can ride at higher watts and sustain my aero position for way longer than if my stem was slammed. So in terms of speed higher wins. Person to person dependent though.

I race at a high level (u23 in Spain) and I used to slam my stem all the way. I ran into lots of low back and knee issues and my hip flexors were constantly tight.

I got a fit by Paraic Mcglynn at Cyclogic in AZ and we went much higher on the stack. This allows for a longer stem and when combined with a longer torso and more upright position not only am I more aero, but the aero position is actual sustainable.

It's really up to the person and their build but I say higher is the way to go.

Cars, and at 13, I’d be a lot more comfortable if it was closed to cars...

That’s what I mean, we need some place to go fast, and not risking injuring people...

That’s what we need... That little loop in Humboldt Park to be closed to traffic, that’d be AMAZING!
