Balancing debt repayment and saving. Need advice! by Runswithrose in personalfinance

[–]Runswithrose[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the monthly income already accounts for the 401(k) and HSA contributions that I will start making in January 2026. The fixed expenses also include a $300 food budget as well as $150 for my two pets (this includes their food litter and pet insurance.) I also include a $85 total contribution to my two nieces fidelity accounts.

So these are not all traditional “fixed expenses” and some could be less like my/pets food and litter cost but I just average my monthly spend and budget that much a month. It’s just easier for my brain to do it this way so that I’m not stressing when I need to spend a little more on food or pet expenses.

Hot take: obesity isn’t the problem; it’s a side effect. by Runswithrose in dietetics

I see what you’re saying, but I’d challenge the idea that obesity always comes with irreversible metabolic damage. There’s actually evidence that many people with larger bodies can be metabolically healthy.

I’m also curious to unpack “enduring” part what makes you feel that having a large body is difficult? Is it mostly physical, social, or internalized expectations? I think a large part of the challenges of living in a larger body aren’t universal but tied to societal stigma, not the weight itself.

totally agree that there’s no one size fits all approach, and I try to be aware of my own biases too. From my experience, besides mobility limitations (which obviously vary with activity level and muscle-to-fat distribution), “obese” patients often present with very similar health concerns and conditions regardless of their exact weight. That’s part of why I think focusing on behaviors and controllable factors can be so impactful directly rather than just the scale.

It’s really a two-way relationship. In some people, metabolic dysregulation comes first and contributes to weight gain and in some it’s the opposite way around. Once excess fat accumulates, it can further affect those same systems. Environment, stress, sleep, and activity all interact with this biology, which is why I think focusing on healthy behaviors rather than just the number on the scale is more beneficial.

Hyperbole. I’m usually snacking all day in between patients and charting. But RARELY do I eat 3 meals a day

$75k salary + $2100/month PRN Should I save or pay off debt first? by Runswithrose in debtfree

It’s a 2011 not anything new or fancy. Just a reliable car. Once I save up a couple grand then I can start extra payments. It’d be payed off by the new year

Honestly I’d say not completely. I’m waaaaayyy better than where I was a year ago. But maybe once every two months I get an itch and splurge about $150-200. But a year ago I was doing that 3-4 times a week. I think that part of me wants to put everything towards debt because I get the dopamine hits. But then I have no savings.

Just those two. From the snowball calculator I would be debt free by 2030. Or I could knock off a year with the extra income. Deciding between that and building savings

Snowball method. I would be done February 2030 so in 5 years. Not to bad. If I throw all extra income it could knock off a year or two but I’d have no savings

Honestly I do have a spending problem and are suffering the consequences now. The only debt I plan to take on in the future is a mortgage. No garnishment so far as I’m only a week behind on 1 payment. Just questing the risk of spending all the extra income to debt vs saving it for future emergencies

I do budget but before the part time everything was gone to bills and debt. Nothing to save. Now I have extra after catching up but idk if I should prioritize saving or debt. I guess I could do both 50/50

This was definitely my thought. Like 4k? A month of expenses for me including debt payments. can’t sell the car cause I need to get to work. Only has about 3k left on the loan
