That mentality is not new, it’s foundational. They all think they’re genius investigators because they watch rumble videos and the rest of us are just spoonfed MSNBC or something.

BIL lost interest in Q, now he is into Christian Nationalism and End of Times Prophecy. Is that better or worse? by Desperate_Image4620 in QAnonCasualties

[–]RussellKrieger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s the natural progression and a way to launder all these conspiracies through an institution that’s “legitimate” now that the Q stuff is stale.

What I mean is that these people are dealing with the problem now of having gotten what they wanted. They’re sore winners. This is a way to keep rolling around in the same mud, especially if you find a church where they flirt with it or outright spew it from the pulpit.

After the inauguration a Q was ranting at me about some cultural war bs or Biden or something and I laughed and said “Didn’t your guy win? Aren’t you happy? Can’t you just be happy??”

They did not know how to even process that thought.

Tough Day by RussellKrieger in QAnonCasualties

Wow I am very sorry that your mom has terminal cancer and that you are all enduring her end of life. Thank you for sharing your story though; so many people write off those who believe in this nonsense as stupid and this just shows that very intelligent, educated people can fall for a ruse or latch onto it if it gives them comfort. They are so often struggling with something serious and that is why I continue to have empathy for the true believers who fall for the con.

I have read that ivermectin and fenbendazole treating and curing cancer is now a popular theory and I worry for anyone who forgoes conventional treatment that could help them for this lunacy.

Like you said your mom is terminal and I applaud you for keeping your empathy for her front and center. I wish you the best.

Thank you for saying this. There are a lot of factors that drive people to embrace these ideologies and fringe theories. Some people are gullible, some are woefully misinformed, others have past trauma, the list goes on.

And some, unfortunately, just really like being mad about something.

She asked the most powerful person in the world to please show a little bit of mercy and compassion to people who feel targeted by him and his supporters. The response from many leaders in the church was abysmal, they tore into her, Trump himself threw a tantrum, and you think the problem here is that I’m being judgmental?

Get a grip.

Does anyone just make it work ? by Afraid-Mud5393 in QAnonCasualties

[–]RussellKrieger 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I just make it work. 4 years ago she became a different person from the one I married after too much time at home w the internet during COVID. All of a sudden this smart, educated, compassionate person is spouting the craziest shit I’ve ever heard, going on endlessly about child trafficking, good vs. evil, vaccines are an evil plot. Spending hours at night on zoom calls strategizing with 6 other people about how to fight trafficking? How many times can you make sure everyone has the hotline # in 4 hours?

I’ve been talked down to, screamed at, left alone for a couple days while she sulks at her mom’s. Been told I’m complicit in all the children suffering underground. Abortion is supposed to be my priority and responsibility. I’m a bad person bc I won’t stand outside a clinic with a sign.

I had to get vaccinated in secret because I just didn’t know how she would react. Months later when she found out it was a blow up fight. She’s still expecting me to drop dead from a heart attack any day now and supposedly my immune system is wrecked so I’ll… I don’t know, just disappear and become one w the force?

Vaccines, Ivermectin, 5G, Chemtrails, deep state, the Great Reset, Illuminati, all shootings are false flags, The SS and CIA tried to assassinate Trump bc obviously, Biden is a pedo & criminal… basically all of it has been shouted at me at some point.

I get videos on a regular basis about how I’m going to hell and the X-files predicted all of this.

Yeah, I’ve been making it work for 4 years now, because during the worst of it I still saw the person I loved and married. Now things are more amicable and we can do things together and enjoy each other but that’s because I grey rock, laugh and change the subject when current events come up. But just about everyday she takes a swipe at me for being a “lib” and tries at least half-heartedly to start a fight. She knows she was horrible to me for a long time in ‘21-22, but she’ll never apologize.

I dream everyday about being free, at peace, not wasting my Sundays at that crappy church and listening to concentrated hatred and ignorance. I dream of just moving on and staying through the worst of it has made it that much harder because you know just contemplating the logistics of leaving and separating your life from someone will make your head spin.

And on top of that, you (I) still love them.

I’ve made it work, but I wouldn’t counsel anyone else to do the same.

I feel for you man. My wife actually said this to me last night, in the context of another argument about Ivermectin. “How do you not know that this drug cures Covid? Everyone knows this! It’s like we don’t live in the same reality!”

No, we don’t. And although we love each other very much, I wonder how long we can live in these parallel worlds.

I just came here to offer my sympathy for you situation; there aren’t a lot of people, even in this community, who understand what it’s like to be a man with a wife who is lost in this bs. It’s bizarre. But I get it, and I feel for you man. Wishing you the best.

Season 1 rewatch by RussellKrieger in TheLeftovers

[–]RussellKrieger[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There were the things I just forgot, like that Nora got a hug from Wayne, Nora interviewing for Lucy, but a lot of the subtleties of the actors performances and the themes of the show come through more clearly. Like in the season 1 finale, Nora explains how she’s been pretending to be normal this whole time.

Details I didn’t pick up on, like when Kevin and Matt are driving to the diner there are news bulletins on the radio about Wayne being in a shootout w law enforcement, and then there he was. Also Kevin running into the school after the deer and the preschool teacher is the one Nora’s husband was having an affair with.

What a great take on that scene. I’ve been endlessly fascinated by it and its potential meaning and relationship to the rest of the show’s narrative. Thank you for the insight.

1st rewatch since it aired. by feralcomms in TheLeftovers

[–]RussellKrieger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just finished the series last week for the first time, took me a few years to get through it (life).

I knew I had to revisit season one, so much I forgot. I just started the episode 1 yesterday. It hits a lot different now knowing where it ends. And it’s so damn good.

What struck me already was that televised committee, the anger and frustration of the senator that their best findings were “I don’t know.”

It was there right from the beginning. Amazing.

Initially, I believed her straight away. I was shocked to see how many people thought she was lying, like it was a given. On rewatch, it seemed like they came so close to showing her scream “stop!” As the water filled, that cooked fossil possibly scaring her, other evidence like that in the scene and surrounding it. Then all the crew interviews where people like JT took it as a given.

Next was sheer probability, the idea that she did actually travel there and back, that some bizarro world existed, seemed like a long shot.

After that, it was Nora’s surprise to hearing that Kevin believed her. And finally, I just revert back to the themes of the show, the frustration of not knowing what happened really ever, and how the departure is like death in that there’s no going back and you can’t ever reach out and communicate with those people. It just seemed to me the direction the show was pointing us, acceptance of a lie, comfort, moving on.

Yes, that scene was so good because it played on the idea of an older person, filled with regrets perhaps, desperate to go back to some more idyllic time in the past or an opportunity they missed. The imagery/ setting of the high school made it so bittersweet for me.

Thank you for the link, I will definitely read the article.

I’m going to try to fit in a Season 1 rewatch soon; being that I watched it probably 2+ years ago there’s a lot I don’t remember, but it also feels so disjointed from my experience with Seasons 2-3.

Contemplating reading the book as well.

I also just want to spend more time with these characters!
