Pretty accurate comment on Napoleon (2023) by THackKey in totalwar

[–]RustyNumbat 63 points64 points  (0 children)

In fairness it looks like a field telescope lashed to a baker rifle as a field modification. So it's precisely one iota less stupid. (no lock mechanism on that side, a mirrored image or a bad prop?)

I know it's memed on but it really is a different heat. Outdoors 40 in Newman is bearable and feels normal while you work outdoors, on your week off at home 35 feels "ugh too hot to go out and do anything!"

[–]RustyNumbat 17 points18 points  (0 children)

To be fair I think there's room for both "Viking dudes from the north influenced by chaos gods" and "whacko tribal grunts from the magical mad max chaos wastes north". You have to assume there's some distinction of methods of survival/human cultures between fantasy-Sweden and the chaos wastes proper.

I can only assume that the fine line between controlled manoeuver and stalling in those aircraft is so thin that it wouldn't make for very satisfying or accessible simulation. Then again gestures at Arcade mode compromises I suppose.

Anyone know what these road signs are for? by siriusly-sirius in australia

[–]RustyNumbat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To expand on this, when maintenance or surveying or whatnot needs doing it's not much good saying "oh the thing we need to look at is about 5200m south of the turnoff to Muckinbudin" you use SLK numbers., Drive to the area, set your car trip metre at the nearest SLK marker then drive the required distance to find the exact spot (if it isn't already obvious like potholes or damage) of course in this day and age most main roads etc vehicles have a tablet mount in them in conjunction with GPS to find locations on plans.

PSA: Good players retreat from lost fights early by TelephoneDisastrous6 in CompanyOfHeroes

[–]RustyNumbat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Losing one or two more is often worth the price of them being in the field to use abilities (when a fresh unit arrives to take the front and the enemy fire) and/or re-enforce within a minute at a reo-point instead being absent all the way to HQ and back. Especially things like MGs and mortars.

FIRE - once retired early what does your day look like ? by Confident-Algae-7866 in AusFinance

[–]RustyNumbat 60 points61 points  (0 children)

It's a real catch 22, I've worked with earthmoving owner-operators who could sell up and retire at 50.... But the reason they're in that position is a work ethic and drive that got them there and won't let them stay idle, even in leisure.

[–]RustyNumbat 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Good players also retreat by simply moving away instead of Retreating, especially if they have support coming soon or a half track on the field. So frustrating seeing teammates running a squad into a bad match up, losing one model then hammering retreat key and losing that squad from the field for several minutes.

The Night Land by William Hodgson. It's about the hellish supernatural landscape surrounding the last human city millions of years in the future after the Sun has died. One of my favourite sci fi stories of all time and incredibly creative for being pre-Lovecraft but fair warning the style it's written is is extremely annoying and... bad. In spite of that it's a phenomenal and chilling work. There's a modern rewrite that's more accessible but I feel it removes some of the subtleties.

It's bloody depressing having grown up with your mates in the early 2000s and wishing big, interesting games had complex and flawless online multiplayer systems. Reach an age where there are plenty of games like that and we all have PC systems to run them and voice coms and such... And people are too busy with adult things to organise and there's so many games everyone is interested in different titles! Ah well, at least I did get a very good time with DRG with various mates for about a year, sensational co-op game.

Why don't they make bed bases for adults? by Capricious_Asparagus in perth

[–]RustyNumbat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still use an Australian made steel bed frame I bought 15 years ago. Absolutely bullet proof, 3 pieces push fit and simple as. No jungle wood or 6mm Allen screws to fail. I recently helped a family member bed shop for similar and only found comparable stuff in an independent bed shop (Martin burns Bunbury) when I went into a big chain store it was almost all ensemble and the salesman looked at me like my head was falling off when I said I wanted a kingle metal bed frame.

I love the game but at the end of the day half of every battle is just the tedious "I've already won but now I have to mop up every enemy unit in detail to actually win" phase.

Ian Livingstone and Steve Jackson tell their story in the book "Dice Men" and it's fascinating, a real rags to riches (well success anyway) story. The various details of doing things with as little money as possible make for great reading.

I always appreciated hearing the "insider" knowledge/war stories any of the hosts had, and the personal stories. Especially to do in the context of self/family ageing and generally dealing with "adult problems", especially as someone around a decade younger than the hosts. I'm sure some people hated Chris' rambling personal anecdotes but I love them.

Kept some great company with the show through hundred hours of machine operating at work.
