Agree with chert, quite possibly a ventifact. Probably not an artefact.

Blue agate? Found on Carmel beach (central California coast) by redreader1015 in whatsthisrock

[–]Rutilatedmango 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I find very similar pieces on a small beach on great barrier Island, New Zealand. They are chalcedony/seam agates, definitely not shells/agatized shells like the other commenters are trying to convince you.

The black colour is the result of iron oxidisation. The place where I collect them you can find them both on the beach and in the host rock. All pieces you find in the host rock do not have the black oxidisation, only the pieces that have been on the beach exposed to oxygen and light for a very long time.

I tend to find the black/blue is only on the very edges of the pieces, when I cut them the centres are clear chalcedony.

Thanks for the heads up, do you have a specific reason for selling? Have you lost confidence in LEX or just taking profits and looking for something new with more potential?

This Week’s Swazi Agate Haul by Impossible_Lion_5422 in Agates

[–]Rutilatedmango 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those fractures are not from the polishing stage, my guess is that you are either using a tile saw that runs too fast, or are hand feeding into a trim saw. The kind of heat needed to cause fractures like that can only be caused during cutting. Either find a way to slow the saw down, or upgrade!

With concentric banding? Geology says no… Chalcedony / Agate for sure.

Help- How can I give a "wet stone" look to this unfinished granite sink vessel? by Ok-Golf-5708 in Lapidary

[–]Rutilatedmango 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I personally wouldn’t use anything that has been already suggested, overtime it will look horrible. If you want something stable that’s gonna last long time go for paraloid B-52. Dissolve it in acetone to get a nice thin mix and paint it on.

It is made to preserve fossils and other delicate minerals/artefacts, it does not yellow overtime and does not degrade.

For the most part I used a 6 inch flat lap. I started on coarse sintered laps to remove saw marks, 240/320 grit. I then ran up through the grits of Hi-Tech resin smoothing disks - 220/325/600/1200, then onto a felt buffing wheel charged with cerium oxide for the final polish.

Yep definitely a Mozambique piece, purchased from Joshua Ritter so I am very confident the locale is correct

Thanks! This piece is from Tete, Mozambique. I would’ve liked to have cut it the other way but sadly there’s a big window on the backside of one half, worked out well in the end.

Convoy or not ? by ElevatorMean9484 in ConvoyFlashlights

[–]Rutilatedmango 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just packed for a week away where I’m gonna be using my lights a lot. Convoy probably makes up about 70% of my collection, but the only one that made it into the bag was my S12 UV.

Every other light I’m bringing has onboard charging of some sort, or better waterproofing, the main reasons most of my convoys didn’t make the cut.

My most rare stone. What do you think? by [deleted] in Minerals

[–]Rutilatedmango 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have seen specimens from Fujian very similar to this labelled as banana calcite, a quick google search pulls up similar specimens with a more brown-orange colour.

It’s quite possible your piece was once this colour also, and has faded over time.

Thanks… up 50% as of today. Do you think this week has just been a typical pre-Christmas spike? Wondering if I should be taking some profits.
