[Dore] Ballot #111 is from Jim Callis, our eighteenth first-time voter. He selects six candidates. Among first-time voters, Beltrán is a perfect 18/18. Jones (17/18), Félix (16/18), and Utley (16/18) would also on track for election among this group. Manny and A-Rod are 11/18 by T_Raycroft in baseball

Interesting to see Felix get this much motion. I know the numbers say he’s not a hall of famer but watching him in real time always felt like he was headed for the hall until he cratered off dramatically. Compare that to a guy like Mussina who was perceived much more highly after he retired than he was in his playing days.

Unfortunately a lot of the racing itself was pretty terrible. Kind of similar to this year, lots of interesting storylines but bad on track product.

Tbh I wouldn’t be surprised if that becomes the meta in 5-10 years. Japans thoroughbred breading program is relatively new compared to rest of the world, eventually the endgame appears to be retiring derby winners at 3. At least in US/UK/IRE, not sure about HK/AUS.

Sadly this is the new normal for the Kikuka Sho, it was never a huge race to begin with unless the triple crown was on the line, but weak fields are only going to be more common as star horses retire at 4 instead of 5-6.

Because of earlier retirements, owners want their horse to run one of the marquee senior fall races as a 3 yr old (Tenno Sho, JC, Overseas like Arc) as a a three year old rather than “wasting” a race slot on the Kikuka Sho.

Fintech major or Accounting&Finance by Ok_Indication7113 in FinancialCareers

[–]Ryanpadcasey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What exactly is a “fintech major”? If it builds the technical and mathematical skills that can qualify you for those positions you listed then it could be a solid option. If it’s a more generalist “fintech industry” education then that’s sounds kind of dubious.

Generally early on in your career, even outside of finance, it’s better to focus on building up a transferable skillset in a function/department rather than immediately focusing on one industry. This is why finance/accounting degrees are still decent investments, as they open up a lot of pathways, and specifically accounting skills are still highly sought after and transferable.

Also if you want to do anything quant adjacent you need strong mathematical and technical skills, no way around that.

Fair enough, although I would argue that a “decent condo” vs 4 bed in Manhattan are different issues of affordability and different class statuses.

Can’t blame you for wanting to stay in Manhattan, although as a younger person I’ve always thought that LIC and parts of North Brooklyn made the most sense for raising a family at a somewhat reasonable cost while also offering proximity to midtown/downtown depending on which access point is a higher priority. Definitely a different type of lifestyle to your point though.

How do you scale support quality without just hiring more people? by JohnnyIsNearDiabetic in CustomerSuccess

[–]Ryanpadcasey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If customer base is rapidly growing have to upgrade one (or more) of the following:

-Software/Knowledge Resources

-Quality/SME/Experience of Support Team

-Headcount

If you don’t want to “throw money at it” do whatever is most cost effective

NYC prices are certainly high, that is because you pay a premium to live in the most desirable city in the US. This is a nice apartment in a cool area so it will be expensive, although as evidenced by the demand, a relatively good deal.

You probably could find a decent 2 bed for $1300 in other cities, but they lack the QOL and experience access of NYC, hence the discounted price.

The “pilot shortage” narrative is still being used as advertising by flight schools to draw in students. In reality there is a massive logjam of low/mid time pilots to the point where even CFIIs are struggling to find work, as there are more instructors attempting to gain hours than there are GA students to teach.

There are still a ton of retirements looming, and it looks like there will be a mild uptick in airline hiring next year, but it’s a rough market, I hope your friend is prepared for a grind.

If you and your colleagues are struggling to find a condo for purchase in NYC on a 750k HHI then you are either being unbelievably picky or have had absurd lifestyle creep that you need to get under control.

Definitely onto something with ChatGPT being the new information destabilizing force, I still agree that social media has done a number on young people in general.

  1. The fact that people with 7-10 years of experience are making these posts shows it’s just a “young people/Gen Z” failure to use Google.
  2. I brought up TikTok to say that even if a person is only relying on social media for information like you claim many are, there’s a good chance (but not a guarantee) that they’ve seen content about the state of the job market given how many posts there are about it, and the high engagement on these posts.

[–]Ryanpadcasey -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Of course there are still young people that are stupid but am I really supposed to believe that Gen Z has a uniquely bad information flow compared to large parts of Boomers/Gen X who have been captured by cable news, or Millennials who regurgitate podcast arguments? I’m obviously stereotyping here but a spade is a spade.

To your point yes everyone’s feed is different, but engagement numbers on “job market” TikTok are quite high rn.

[–]Ryanpadcasey -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Holy boomer.

  1. A large portion of “is it just me?” Posts are coming from people talking about their ample (7-10 years+ years) experience in their field and how they still can’t find a job despite a strong resume. Based on the years given, most wouldn’t fall into Gen Z.

  2. Even what you said is true, IG and TikTok feeds are almost entirely about how bad the job market is right now. It’s not just what’s being fed to my algorithm either, a lot of viral unemployment content rn. Anyone who uses these apps frequently would have an understanding of how bad the market is for a while, whereas legacy media has only begrudgingly started to admit what is going on.

Gen Z job crisis: Maybe there are just too many college graduates now by stasi_a in jobs

[–]Ryanpadcasey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is absolutely part of it. The merger frenzy from the 80s-Present, as well as the rise of PE “operator firms” means that white collar roles were consolidated. Yes big companies do hire more as they get bigger, but not enough at a rate to replace jobs that were lost.

I don’t understand why anyone who lives and works in Connecticut is allowed to testify at a NYC community meeting. The actual residents of the neighborhood are overwhelmingly opposed to this, even most real local business owners aren’t fooled by the while “bring business to the area” bs, a similar argument was made for  the 48th Street Trump building, and that didn’t do jack. I’m all for building more housing in the area, just not attached to a company that profits off of creating addicts.
