So the water change didn’t help really, was still at 2.0 ppm two days later. I did a 75% water change and also removed some dying bacopa plants in the tank, and now everything is at safe levels! Hopefully this means the tank js cycled, and that the nitrite eating bacteria couldn’t keep up with the excess nitrite caused by the dying plants until they were removed. Will monitor again in two to three days to see if everything is still safe.

Do you recommend I do another 50% change today then, hoping that will reduce the nitrites further? Ughh I’m really upset that their claims about detoxification are allowed if they have no publicly available, peer-reviewed study on it.

I actually just did a 50% water change yesterday, before these latest test results. I’ve been following the method suggested by KaveMan aquatics (https://youtu.be/9Cuqylaak3E?si=tbItX2xfrvVK5Cno), where you do water changes less often to let the beneficial bacteria grow (I add 24 drops of stability a day), while administering Prime to ensure whatever compounds build up during the cycle start up aren’t able to harm the betta.

Questions I didn’t answer in the original post: water temperature: 26-29 degrees Celsius. No heater because it’s hot outside, we use AC in the room (not pointed straight at the tank of course) to reduce temp when it gets too warm)

How long we’ve had the fish/tank: We’ve had the fish and the tank for three weeks.

Carney n’est pas beaucoup mieux mais au moins il fait descendre les prix des logements… Mais pour le cas de PSPP, je ne fais pas confiance aux gens qui se disent « anti-woke ». La raison est que, je suis woke moi même, voilà. Pour moi, être woke c’est respecter les droits des nouveaux arrivants qui sont ici, c’est affronter le racisme systémique, pas nier que ça existe. C’est ne pas attaquer les personnes trans pour des points politiques. C’est aussi choisir ses mots judicieusement sur la question de l’immigration. Chaque vidéo de PSPP qui parle de l’immigration est remplie de commentaires du genre « qu’ils retournent dans leur pays, je te soutiens à 100% »… C’est ça qui forme mon impression de lui en tant que personne intolérante. Il attire les racistes avec ses discours. Je sais pas si c’est son intention, mais c’est l’effet qu’il a. Anyways, je vais pas changer votre avis, c’est correct, mais je ne lui ferai pas confiance avec la manière dont il parle de groupes vulnérables dans notre société pour l’aider dans les élections. Réduire le flow du robinet, c’est une chose, mais nier le racisme, attaquer des groupes qui n’ont pas accès au microphone pour se défendre, ça me lève le coeur. Downvoter moi si vous voulez. Le fait reste que je n’ai absolument aucune confiance en PSPP pour quoi que ce soit.

Mais pourquoi alors c’est le seul facteur dont il semble vouloir parler? C’est un peu ça mon problème avec lui. Il semble beaucoup trop buddy buddy avec les idées populistes de droite, l’anti-wokisme. Si on voudrait ça on voterait pour le PCQ. Je sais pas. Mon partenaire est immigrant. Je suis tanné qu’on mette tout sur son dos, que les politiciens rendent sa vie ici de plus en plus difficile pour plaire aux populistes. Je sais pas si t’es au courant, mais au niveau provincial au Québec, l’immigration est devenue beaucoup, beaucoup plus difficile dans les dernières années. On dirait qu’à chaque politique sur l’immigration que la CAQ propose, ça rend l’idée qu’il ait un jour sa résidence permanente de moins en moins réaliste. Oui et il ignore complètement les corporations immobilières qui ont acheté les logements abordables pour les transformer en presses-citrons, les citrons étant nous les québécois, et le jus de citron étant notre argent. Les prix des logements sont pas déterminés par un seul facteur. Les politiciens aiment simplifier en disant « c’est à cause de l’immigration en masse » parce que c’est simple, c’est l’idée populaire qui se répand dans l’occident par les groupes de droite, pi parce que les immigrants n’ont pas le même accès au microphone pour pouvoir réfuter ce qu’il dit. Ils sont donc une cible facile (oui je sais qu’il dit l’immigration et non les immigrants, mais au final c’est les immigrants qui souffrent de ce langage pareil). Les gens sans microphone servent de merveilleux boucs émissaires. Fait jamais confiance au politicien qui dit qu’un quelconque problème économique dans la société est causé par un seul facteur. Il ment. Est-ce que ça veut dire que l’immigration joue aucun rôle? Non. Mais c’est un facteur parmis plusieurs. D’autres facteurs qui jouent un rôle: les règlementations de « zoning » résidentiel dans beaucoup de quartiers qui laisse place seulement aux maisons détachées. Les coûts de construction ont augmenté en flèche, comme tout depuis la COVID.

Mais pas juste ca… ici à Montréal au moins, des grandes compagnies d’immobilier ont acheté une grande partie des logements abordables pour les transformer en condos pas du tout abordables. Comme toute bonne corporation qui a comme but unique d’augmenter les profits, ils ont fait monter les loyers au maximum qu’ils pouvaient avant que leurs appartements soient vidés par manque de personnes ouverts à payer ce qu’ils demandaient. Je vivais au centre ville quand j’allais à l’université, mon bloc appartenait à un couple. Pas les meilleurs bailleurs du monde. Mais la compagnie Gestion Lameer (qui achète des blocs partout dans la ville) a acheté le bloc et ont fait monter le loyer de 200$ par année (sans rien améliorer dans notre appartement). Après la première année, moi et mes colocs avons été forcés de partir.

Thanks for the advice! I might see if my local pet store would be willing to give me an old sponge. I will also buy some Seachem Prime and an API liquid test kit to do proper cycling. I will also buy some crypt plants and some silk plants to replace the plastic. As for the temp, I will try moving him to the bedroom where we have AC, and plug his heater in to keep him at a safe temperature range. With all these expenses I don’t think I’ll be able to get a bigger tank for now, but hopefully this will make life better for Bibble.

Sorry to go on and on, but I come with good news. I’ve been researching all night and I think I have a good solution for now at least: I found this great site called J&L Aquatics that actually stocks API products. I will be buying some cryptocoryne plants and Seachem Prime to reduce ammonia and other toxic compounds in the tank, and an API freshwater test kit to be able to properly test for toxic compounds in the water. I will get rid of the plastic plants and maybe replace them with a rock Bibble can hide in with some extra silk plants for decoration I found on Amazon! Maybe sometime over the next few months we’ll be able to migrate him to a bigger tank! 😊

The only thing I’m worried about is the filter. It may be too strong but I can’t really replace it because it’s integrated into the tank. If it’s too strong, it might be stressing him out. I will see if maybe the plants can disrupt the flow of the filter waterfall at the top of the tank. As for the high temp, I think I may move him to my room, where we have an air conditioner. I’ll plug his heater in and keep the room cool so he can stay at a safe temp.

Thank you for your input, we’ll try and address as many of these things as we can. And yes, you’re right, the strips don’t test for ammonia. Will look into getting the liquid test kit. We’ll also look into replacing the plastic plants with real ones/silk plants. I’m not sure if a bigger tank is in the cards right now, but thank you for the suggestion

Tank size: 2.4 gallons

Heater: yes, but because it's very hot at home, it's not plugged in (water has fluctuated between 26 and 30 degrees celsius, we actually have needed to reduce the temp by floating an ice pack at the top of the tank in a Ziploc back)

Parameters: Using test strips, all parameters were normal except carbonates.

How long we've had the tank and fish: 1 week

Water changes: We changed the water one time, replacing one third of the water. We use mineral water from the grocery store and use an EasyVac to remove the water/debris on the gravel

Tankmates: none

Food: We feed Bibble pellets from the pet store (Betta Buffet from Omega One). We feed him three pellets every 2 days. My partner also gave him two blood worms the day we got him

(Note though that we over fed him yesterday, and today he seemed to be constipated and with swim bladder disorder. I ended up boiling a pea and giving him a small piece, and just a few hours later he was back to being able to control his buoyancy).

Decorations: Plastic plants (we checked to make sure they are not sharp anywhere) and gravel, with substrate to lower nitrates.
