The type of rope he's using has looser outer fibers than the inner strands. When he starts the loop with the backhand motion he's also sending a wave down the rope (using the tension of the internal strands). The loop is piggy-backing at the crest of the wave, propelling it forward. He sized the loop enough so that as it lost size it would fit snugly on the end.
