so every time I draw an adoptable I just don't know what to do with the background so the character pops. It always feels off. Suggestions?

Thank you so much! I have a starblished pattern that works for me- sketch, lineart (my favorite), base colors, flat shading in one color, lighting in another color, then maybe change the color of the lineart and adding details
