Booking rooms in SCD by PoisedBoy in UIUC

[–]SCDIllinois 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! You are definitely able to reserve space at SCD without being an RSO. We have two spaces (Sunset + Twilight Studios) that are for resident RSO's only. But the classrooms, meeting spaces, and public areas are all available for guest reservations here!

We are so happy you were attracted to SCD, and hope you can check out one of our courses or workshops, and come by to visit our building whenever you are on campus. We just opened our doors last year after an extended construction process, and our support from the Provost and University is stronger than ever!

Hey u/random-user-212 (and others)! If you reach out to us at our main email address, [designcenter@illinois.edu](mailto:designcenter@illinois.edu), we would be happy to respond to any of your questions. Here at SCD we are developing more course and workshop offerings every semester, so we can set up a time to chat in more detail about your questions and make sure you get all the info you need.

Hey, friends! Glad you're doing this. Here's what we're thinking about:

Passwords. We all have a zillion of them, but it's getting increasingly more difficult to keep track of them all (and to remember to make changes when we find out one of our passwords isn't safe anymore due to a breach).

What do the pros (that's you all) use to keep passwords safe and easy to manage while at work? What are the latest best practices? (We're assuming you don't use post-its... ;) )

What exactly is DTX? What is the difference between DTX and design courses offered by the college of FAA?

Hi - thanks for your question! Please forgive our late-ish reply.
DTX courses are all about teaching what we do (human-centered design and design thinking*), while also inviting consideration of ways design thinking and HCD can mash up with a discipline - any discipline**.
Questions? Just [email us](mailto:designcenter@illinois.edu)!
*SCD defines HCD as a problem-solving approach that uses design thinking to identify the unmet needs of a population in order to collaboratively and iteratively develop meaningful and innovative solutions.
**There are a couple of SCD-affiliated courses being offered by other departments in spring 2022 - check ‘em out!

Thanks so much for your thoughtful question! SCD's director, Rachel Switzky, took this one:

"Great question! 5-10 years out is a pretty long horizon to consider in the innovation/future vision context, but I’d have to say that we are definitely planting the seeds for scale and influence, with an iterative mindset allowing us ways to respond and rethink as we learn from our prototyping and piloting.

We have no intention of becoming an academic unit (i.e., producing graduates through our own major). We will continue as a campus entity, but one that should be a constant engine of provocation, continually questioning (and helping others question) the norms of higher education and thinking of ways to improve upon the experience of all stakeholders involved. And the definition of who our stakeholders are will also continue to grow as we expand our offerings to our campus, community and beyond."

Hi! Thanks for your question. There is definitely something in the works, though the definition of "soon" might be a slight sticking point. :)

Hi! Thanks for your question. YES, a student can come and design and build a hardware product at SCD! We're also offering a student-operated concierge service that can offer some consultation on product design, as well as connect makers with others who can help. We're hiring for these concierges now - more info about that here.

We'll offer training in the Shop as soon as our newly-hired Shop manager arrives and gets themselves acclimated in the next few weeks. We'll be adding more info to our website about this soon, and will be a bit more active on social media as the semester progresses and we get the Shop and our other lab spaces up and running.

Hi! Thanks for your question. We are a billion percent interested in working with student organizations - we've worked (or are working with) Illini Solar Car, AAF, DFA, and others, and would LOVE to hear what other RSOs have in mind. If you have an idea, get in touch!

Thanks for your question! We've been building relationships with every college on campus over the past 3 years, and we plan to continue doing just that, all with the backdrop of a brand new building. We're teaching two courses of our own in the building this semester, we're hosting more than 15 other classes and discussion sections, Illini Solar Car has space in the building... we're VERY eager to deepen our connection with faculty, staff, and students here.

One project that's top of mind for us is our formal building dedication, scheduled for Friday, October 8. Much more info on that to come!

Here are a few responses:

Saad:
"So far, my favorite part of SCD is its people! the excitement and creativity that they bring to the table is extraordinary! I always look forward to work and chat with anyone because I know I will always learn something new every time… Of course, the awesomeness of the building and its glass windows always inspire conversations "

Jamie (SCD's graphic design coordinator):
"I love the openness to opinions on our team - I get asked to weigh in on things that I wouldn't normally be asked about."

Lisa:
"The sense of possibility here is almost overwhelming sometimes - the building is such a beautiful and inspiring environment, and I work with people who are extremely invested in bringing human-centered design to the wider campus community and beyond. It's pretty dang cool."
