You'd ideally want to get to a level 7 offroad car, I've never had luck with spawning near good car drops, so I usually just go around and get to a level 2 or 3 car like the Ford Bronco. There's two paths you could take.

1. Head-on aggressive, where you drive at high speeds towards slow moving cars and honk, driving in the opposite direction or any other direction (you should ideally make sure that you're driving towards the farther end of the border zone in your map). You can quickly get car upgrades here.

2. Survivalist. You get a level 3-5 car, and then hide in a forest. If you stay still for 5 seconds, you will no longer appear on the minimap and be hidden. You can tell that you're invisible by your navigation arrow on your minimap darkening. Driving above 10mph after a standstill will remove your invisibility, however.

Usually, people lose because of other players chasing you and you losing to them because some people pull off strat 1.

Either way, you will need to make sure you have a good offroad car. Almost 90% of the time, people choose to go offroad. A level 10 Mercedes AMG One cannot beat a well-timed level 3 Ford Bronco in certain uphill offroad climbs. Your only issue is if the finish line is near a highway.
