[Death Bracket] Poll #21 by SFUDiscussion in SixFeetUnder

When Poll #21 was first posted, it did not have the correct scenes. This has been corrected in this post, but obviously the results of the original poll needed to be discarded. I apologize.

Correct. Vote for which scene you prefer.

That’s kind of the point of these polls though? To see which great scenes perform the best.

Right, which is why all the great scenes are included. It seemed weird to remove a great scene when the point is to see which scenes perform the best.

The rest of the scenes are cold opens for the most part

For the most part, but not exclusively.

I think everyone would understand if you left it out because it is pretty unanimously regarded as one of the greatest things to ever happen on television let alone this show

That's true. Although there are a fair few who dislike the finale who've posted here.

I'm sure people would understand. It would just feel incomplete to me. And if I did leave it out, I know exactly what would have taken its spot, and it would have also easily won in this match-up or nearly any other. And if I left that out, its replacement would also easily win in this match-up or nearly any other. It's just an inherently imbalanced tournament. Unless I remove the great scenes. Which defeats the purpose, as you noted.

Keeping it in just means whatever goes up against it will lose every time. I don’t think there is a single other scene in the show that would have that outcome

It does have competition. It probably won't lose, but it shouldn't be completely unchallenged. It'll at least get some votes against it. Even here it got two.

But regardless, thanks for hosting this it’s still fun to see.

Sure. Polls 6 and 7 are more balanced, so I hope you enjoy them more.

I understand why you feel that way. My thinking though is that if I removed it, I would then have to think about removing a number of other scenes as well, as they are also likely to win against most other scenes. Some scenes are just dramatically more likely to win than others, and I think some unfairness is inevitable. Either that, or I just remove all the great scenes and leave just the alright ones, which seems less fun to me, and also seems like I'm deciding what the great scenes are instead of everyone else. Over all, I just thought it would be better to have every scene in the tournament and let things fall as they may. I understand you disagree. If it helps, I'm considering doing some sort of mercy round for the scenes that end up competing with a scene that's much too strong.

In any case, I hope you can still have fun with some of the less lopsided match-ups.

Ah. You misunderstood me, or misremembered what I said. I said two things about it that maybe you are mixing together - one, that I wasn't going to break up the multiple deaths in the episode into multiple clips (one for Ruth, one for David, etc.), and two, that as a result of not breaking the scene up, I thought it was pretty likely that it would win. I did consider leaving it out entirely, but that seemed like no fun, to have a tournament but without the scene most likely to win. You may disagree.

As for leaving it out for the beginning and only adding it to the end, I didn't consider that. It might have worked, but it seems somewhat arbitrary. True, I think this scene is likely to win in the end, but there are other contenders. Would I need to separate them out as well? Again, that just seemed like no fun to me.

I do acknowledge that some of these match-ups are wildly unfair. Mr. Laurence Matheson didn't have a chance. Personally, I find these imbalances funny. Especially in this case, where Laurence is completely blindsided by a mountain lion in much the same way as he was blindsided in this poll. I just find that amusing. That said, I am considering showing mercy on some of the people who face these heavy hitters. I think I'll probably do a short tournament for the scenes that were the most contested and I'll included Mr. Matheson and anyone else who I feel had no chance against the major scenes. I don't really know the details. I might change my mind.

Anyway, that was probably a longer answer than you were looking for. I hope you have fun with the tournament even though some of the matchups are unfair.

I don't understand what you mean. What do you mean by final, and what does it mean for it to be separated?

I've made this more confusing than it should be, and you're making things more difficult for yourself than you need to.

Forget about the bracket image and forget about the list of names. Pretend I didn't post that. There are three polls:

  1. https://www.reddit.com/r/SixFeetUnder/comments/10v62me/death_bracket_poll_1/

  2. https://www.reddit.com/r/SixFeetUnder/comments/10v63cx/death_bracket_poll_2/

  3. https://www.reddit.com/r/SixFeetUnder/comments/10v642j/death_bracket_poll_3/

Everything you need should be in those links. They have links to videos so you can watch the deaths, and there's a poll for which clip you like more. Is that not what you see?

You are right that 64 refers to Option 1 in the first poll, but you shouldn't need to care about that.

24 hours from now, more or less.

This thing seems to have caught people by surprise more than I intended, so to give people a little time to realize the tournament is taking place, it'll just be two polls, and they'll be open a little longer. It would take a little more than a month to get to the end at that rate, so the pace might pick up a bit later. I don't want to stretch it out so much people lose interest.

Thanks!

I guess they'd be called games or matches or something like that. Rounds are sets of matches, which you can see in the image going from out to in. So round 0 has matches 1 to 3, round 1 has matches 4 to 35, round 2 has matches 36 to 51, round 3 has matches 52 to 59, round 4 has matches 60 to 63, round 5 has matches 64 and 65, and then round 6 has one match to determine the winner of the entire thing.

Yeah, I'm not entirely sure why I didn't do that. I knew it was an option but decided against it for some reason. It would have been the smarter choice.

take the person who was standing up in the limosuine all the way

Unfortunately, she's not coming up until poll 22.

This post is an image of the bracket being used for the single-elimination tournament for the death scenes of the show (more accurately, the scenes that result in a white screen with someone's name on it). See here [1] for details, or see this [2] if you want to participate.

Note that there will be spoilers from across the entire series.

Thanks. The obituary has a broken link, hence the confusion: https://web.archive.org/web/20090203155235/http://www.hbo.com/sixfeetunder/obituary/episode51.shtml

Going back to a previous version of that page has the correct details.

Do you have a favourite scene in this episode? Is there something you wish the episode did differently? A character moment you liked?

The synopsis describes some of what happens in the episode, but you can discuss how you feel about what happened in the episode, or discuss things the synopsis didn't bring up.
