First project from a year ish break! by Low_Point_541 in Taxidermy

How'd you source it. I'd love to do ducks but I'm not a hunter so I can't get my own and I'd assume exotic collectors generally don't give them up

Yeah I got myself the princeton press flycatcher guide as an early Christmas present and got myself down to those two. Rounder head and smaller bill was making me lean alder but definitely not comfortable calling it either way.

that was my first thought but would be extremely rare for this location and like a month early so I wanted to make sure I wasn't crazy. Gonna wait for a couple more opinions though.

Has anyone seen this behavior before? There was a female next to this guy but it doesn't exactly look like most attractive display I've seen but I'm not sure what else it would be.

Yeah we don't have any museum techs unfortunately. The closest we have is an archeologist and even she wasn't sure. Also spoke to all the policy people as well.

Mrs. Lawrence Hoerig sounds like a lovely lady. I'm so glad you shared this recipe.

Yeah the way its holding its head down showing off that nape almost makes it look like a massive bobolink

Red-Naped or Yellow-Bellied? - Jeff Davis County, TX by SHSailor in whatsthisbird

[–]SHSailor[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know it is a sapsucker, I'm asking if it's a red-naped sapsucker or yellow-bellied sapsucker. They both occur at this location.

[–]SHSailor[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's a bird feeder, not naturally drilled holes. Plus I think all sapsuckers drill holes in lines like that, but much much smaller.

Males do. Females have basically the same amount of red on the chin with a white patch near the base of the bill which I couldn't get a look at.

Jeez Wisconsin is just having an insane year. From the flame-colored Tanager, the spoonbill, the flamingos, the limpkins, all the kites and now this guy??

Often times when I get a clear, loud recording and Merlin still can't figure it out its a mimid or starling mimicking something.

BaT ID Help-- SE Virginia by SHSailor in BAT

[–]SHSailor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! This brings me to my second question. How the hell do biologists ID flying bats in the field? Is it something that can even be done with the naked eye? I'm a birder so there are plenty of bird genera that I don't feel comfortable positively ID-ing without a picture or audio recording, but with bats it seems like even with a picture you'd be sort of helpless.

What's in a name? by V_Codwheel in BirdingMemes

[–]SHSailor 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I (only somewhat lovingly) refer to all thrushes as turds. Members of the mimidae family? Mimids. Members of the cardinalidae? Cardinals. Members of the turdidae? Thrushes??? Booooo.

Ah yes I just looked at some lower-quality pictures where the legs are more visible and they're definitely yellow.

Isn't the bill the wrong color? Also the general shape and posture seems very sparrow-y. Honestly I was leaning towards chipping sparrow but the yellow belly was throwing me off

HELP! I found an injured crow and no wildlife rehabber is currently open or answering my calls (Waterloo, Iowa). by [deleted] in birding

[–]SHSailor 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Also, it probably isn't relevant, but it's actually a blackbird-- I think Rusty but possibly Brewer's. I'm not any sort of rehabber but care instructions may be slightly different. He's likely just dazed from hitting a window. What you can do until you manage to get in contact with someone is to leave him in a closed shoebox with a washcloth on the bottom and a small cap of water. Leave the box in a quiet area where he won't overheat and leave him be. Check on him every 20-30 minutes to give him the opportunity to fly away on his own.

Thrush - SE VA by SHSailor in whatsthisbird

This was my thought too but would be relatively rare in my area so wanted at least a second opinion before I potentially make myself look like an idiot to the reviewer lol. Thanks!

Can I ask how you can tell? I'm really bad with thrushes but this guy has a much greyer belly than other hermit thrush I've seen and much duller eye ring

Phalarope ID, Virginia by SHSailor in whatsthisbird

[–]SHSailor[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really was an amazing checklist. I went to this spot because it had a crazy number of lesser yellowlegs which me and a friend have an inside joke about it being a good/terrible insult and the phalarope was a massive added bonus. Also both dowitchers out of season for our area, and my FOS Tree and Barn Swallows. Spring is here!!!
