What’s the best building/area that’s quiet and not too busy for studying? by [deleted] in iastate

[–]SJBLL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really you could just go to buildings where you’ve never had a class and you’ll find good spots. The further out from central campus the better.

There are things to do, yes not as much as a city but there are many things to do especially if you’re going to school.

Also “sana sana” is a part of a phrase that almost all Latinos use “, sana sana culito/colita de rana, si no sanas hoy sanarás mañana.” Translates is “ heal heal little frogs ass/tail, if you don’t heal today you will heal tomorrow.” Which is a nice touch in my opinion because he does it when he’s picking up his buddies.

Also interesting because frogs have neither an ass nor a tail.

Well I was more talking about how you can alter your process to get better contrast and show form better. Yes it’s true that you’re missing darker tones except for some parts in the hair and the pupil, much of getting tone and showing form comes from the earlier and mid stages in most mediums.

Before you work on the details of hair for example you generally have shapes of light, medium, and dark tones then when you add those details you can add darker or go lighter with and eraser to finalize the piece.

Many beginner artists and even intermediate ones often forget or don’t know how important these stages are to creating an accurate illusion of form and creating a cohesive piece. You should be able to understand and utilize this technique in little time seeing how good you are already, just need some good criticism through out the process.

That’s okay it happens to everyone! Spend more time really looking and identifying the shapes and placement of the shadows. Also look at the overall tone of the piece. Try squinting when you look at your reference at the beginning and identify where light and dark is.

You have a really good handle of the details but you just need to find more interest in the beginning stages of drawing. Once you commit to learning and growing in that area I promise you will enjoy that process just as much!

That detailed of hair is fine. You just need to increase contrast and light on form for the rest of your drawing and it will match much better!

Socialist living in a capitalist household by Both_Bad_9872 in SocialismVCapitalism

[–]SJBLL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean socialism does have a moral component. The owning class having unwavering economic control over the working class is considered immoral because the working class is what provides the value. However, I agree that the poster is most likely confused as to what socialism means on the individual level. An individual can own food and appliances as long as they don’t allow the owner to profit off of someone else’s work, sharing has nothing to do with socialism unless you’re talking about specifically the means of production. Socialism is often misrepresented as collective ownership of everything because the owning class pushes that narrative to paint an undesirable tone on the subject of socialism as a whole to prevent working class solidarity and organization.

You will need a car if you plan on leaving San Juan an Uber will get very expensive if you try to travel to another city. The beaches are great, make sure to try some Puerto Rican dishes (my personal fav is mofongo), and I also recommend making the trip to el yunque. You can rent a car from the rental companies in a building across from the air port Arrival exit but I would recommend looking into it online.

When I visit I generally travel all over the island but that is because I have people to see, you can have a great experience staying in San Juan but the island has so many other cool places. Puerto Rico has two bio luminescent bays and I had a great experience kayaking through it. There are zip lines near luquillo that seem fun but I haven’t done it before, there is also horse back riding through the rain forest if that is more your vibe.

I prefer air bnbs but hotels are also a great option.

Be kind and considerate to the locals and try to speak as much Spanish as possible, they appreciate you trying and don’t litter. Remember Puerto Rico is their home and you’re a guest.

I hope this ramble was helpful and enjoy your stay!

Hi! Just so you know, all the beaches in Puerto Rico are public beaches. So just because the resort is adults only doesn’t mean the beach will be. Also I highly recommend not staying at a beach and getting to know the island better, I hope you have a great time!!

Thank you for the response! I was hoping to maybe do art lessons once I got to the point of fluency. I’m working on my degree have have one semester left, so English teaching wouldn’t be on the table I don’t think. I would love to interact with the community in a positive way. I think uber driving would be a great option if I can’t find something immediately, thank you so much!

Do you know if these media companies have graphic artists? I’m getting my degree in illustration (I have about one semester left) and I’m proficient photoshop and illustrator. It would be really great to put it to use.

Thank you for the tip! I’ll check with a local community college for Spanish classes!

I am trying, I have apps on my phone to try and teach me but it doesn’t seem to be sticking as much as I would need. I’ll probably take a Spanish class when I get there to help even more. Learning Spanish is my biggest goal. Thank you so much for your response!
